	♥ 9:05am Handy Haversack: Many years ago, we found an owlet that had crashed into our bldg. After learning that there is no twenty-four-hour raptor rescue in NYC, we took it in and kept it in a dark box overnight, hoping it would recover (this is the method). But it was still just stunned and listless. In the morning, Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in Manhattan told me they would take it in if I could bring it to them. I was going to take a car into Manhattan and drop it off on my way to work, but it died while I was showering. Most gorgeous dead thing I have ever seen. RIP, Flaco. You died free, at least. This city eats its treasures.

	♥ 9:15am Vivian: We have a lot of old growth around our house- forests with a lot of oaks. Last year, I noticed I hadn't heard owls like in years past. That changed recently and had the pleasure of gazing upon a barred owl in our backyard a few weeks ago. We looked at each other for a minute, then the owl flew away. That was a precious moment.

Lately, there's been an uproar over coyotes in the neighborhood. I don't know what you expect - if you destroy their habitats with urban sprawl, where are they suppose to go?

I've seen cute little chipmunks hunting frogs, ravens diving to snare a chipmunk, great blue heron flying with a dead snake in their talons, and most recently a fox digging through the snow to get at a red squirrel. He was wiped out in a week and a half. The final straw was when the family was having dinner and saw a coyote carrying off the family cat.

The no greater love thing is usually reserved for soldiers. Doesn’t hold a candle to the incomparable courage it takes to take one’s life, which was a conscientious rejection of the armed forces signed up for in order to be of service to the homeless and marginalized (was active in the San Antonio DSA and Mutual Aid groups) while speaking eloquently of America’s brutal racist history, willing to sacrifice himself to protest the horrifying injustice in Palestine. Having trouble finding all the appropriate words now.

There's a statue of a coyote in Van Cortlandt Park, comemorating a coyote that made it all the way into the Bronx. I used to see lots of raccoons and an occasional fox while bikeriding there. They all had the Bronx 'tude -- "Hey, what are you lookin' at?!"

These are just lengths of paracord hung from the top of the window so they don't block the view much, but do seem to significantly reduce bird collisions (but you do need to be able to hang stuff outside the window, so probably wouldn't work in most workplaces (or buildings over a few stories). I put some up on a west-facing big window in our dining room and bird collisions dropped to almost zero. There's a north-facing window that I haven't treated yet--still gets a few, though it seemed to have a much lower number of collisions (maybe less direct reflection from afternoon sun?)

	♥ 9:05am Handy Haversack: Many years ago, we found an owlet that had crashed into our bldg. After learning that there is no twenty-four-hour raptor rescue in NYC, we took it in and kept it in a dark box overnight, hoping it would recover (this is the method). But it was still just stunned and listless. In the morning, Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in Manhattan told me they would take it in if I could bring it to them. I was going to take a car into Manhattan and drop it off on my way to work, but it died while I was showering. Most gorgeous dead thing I have ever seen. RIP, Flaco. You died free, at least. This city eats its treasures.

That changed recently and had the pleasure of gazing upon a barred owl in our backyard a few weeks ago. We looked at each other for a minute, then the owl flew away. That was a precious moment.

I've seen cute little chipmunks hunting frogs, ravens diving to snare a chipmunk, great blue heron flying with a dead snake in their talons, and most recently a fox digging through the snow to get at a red squirrel. There's a statue of a coyote in Van Cortlandt Park, comemorating a coyote that made it all the way into the Bronx. I used to see lots of raccoons and an occasional fox while bikeriding there. They all had the Bronx 'tude -- "Hey, what are you lookin' at?!"

These are just lengths of paracord hung from the top of the window so they don't block the view much, but do seem to significantly reduce bird collisions (but you do need to be able to hang stuff outside the window, so probably wouldn't work in most workplaces (or buildings over a few stories). I put some up on a west-facing big window in our dining room and bird collisions dropped to almost zero. There's a north-facing window that I haven't treated yet--still gets a few, though it seemed to have a much lower number of collisions (maybe less direct reflection from afternoon sun?)
