The ironic-hipster contagion didn't spread far, fortunately, but it seems like it *did* just briefly infect Jim the Poet. i think just about everything gets eaten! although i've never heard of ticks, fleas or mosquitoes being eaten...
but actually i assume the most common arthropod to be eaten is the shrimp. don't know why i didn't think of it first.

my sister took some class in collage in the 80s (and i'm sure since reagan the standards are lower) had an fda handbook with the permissible amounts of ant heads, rat hairs, spider legs etc in food... it was revelatory!

Back to eating ticks: I saw this movie called Mondo Pazzo at The Film Forum in Pasadena. In one scene, a poor Mexican Campesno was paid to eat a burrito filled with ticks. They were hopping out and getting on his face.

working in small "health food" stores, we'd freeze the rices, millet, some other grains and legumes upon receiving, before selling it, to neutralize the gypsy meal moth eggs that were likely to be mixed in.
bigger stores don't need to do that because it sells faster; so the customer just eats the viable eggs...or gets a moth problem. our customers only ate dead moth eggs.

Ok, gross tick stories? I remember this time I was sleeping in the great dismal swamp and camped on a spot that was also a place several ticks laid eggs. I woke up in the morning and my legs felt like cottage cheese-like bumpy because so many baby ticks were getting their first meal from me. Little micro vampires!

oh, well thats a great idea. So far all of them are currently living...but there are a few more still in composition. A lot is known about insects from the fossil record. Giant dragonflies, bees living same time as dinasours.
