I had an LP from a series done in the 60's at Carnegie Hall.

One side was my hometown Garfield Cadets (NJ), the other Blessed Sacrament from CA.

There were other bands recorded & released as well.

Marching band competitions were a big thing where I'm from in the 60's .

Attended many with my Dad

You can usually hear nearly all of it pretty well, but the brass tends to dominate. Playing Trombone, I usually heard mostly the rest of my section, the drums, and the trumpets. But when we would actually march in a parade, trombones were always in the front, so I'd hear the rest of the band behind me pretty well.

When the Super Bowl was in East Rutherford a local TV reporter interviewed the mayor (James Cassella) about preparations for the game. At the conclusion of the interview the reporter said something like, "Well, I guess we'll see you at the game." The mayor replied oh no, I can't even think about going. Those tickets are too expensive for someone on a small town mayor's salary.

Here's a cool story. A handful of the HSB cast went to Carnegie Mellon U. in Pittsburgh. One year Bruce Weitz (who played Belker) was asked to give the commencement address. One slight problem: He didn't actually graduated. He'd completed his coursework, but he'd racked up maybe $400 in parking fines. He was a young struggling actor, he didn't have the $$, he just never paid the fine.

Wow. Lug that on the subway? I saw a reddit post of someone who split and and rebound the book into three smaller volumes - two for the story, and one for the end notes

There are at least three ways to enjoy Infinite Jest. One is to study it like a English grad school class. This is my default mode, but it's not for everyone. Another is to just open it to any page and read a few pages--it's astounding how enjoyable this is, his writing is just overflowing with enthusiasm, inventiveness, daring. A third way (and my favorite way) is to imagine it like a TV series. Supposedly DFW decreed that Infinite Jest would not be adapted to TV/film. I can see why, but I also think it could be an all-time great TV series.

I was well into reading Infinite Jest, then one night I dozed off on the subway and woke up at the end of the 2 line. Disoriented, I exited the train and left my copy of the book on the train. If you have read the book and are familiar with the concept of "the samizdat", my life was in complete flux until I could obtain another copy.

Taste is such a subjective thing. I prefer Consider The Lobster to Infinite Jest. Clear, concise, with a good lashing of veiled contempt for his subjects.

I had a poetry professor many years ago who said something very similar about T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land: imagine it as an opera, with characters and costumes and sets changing. It's great advice.

Yes. It is unfinished. I do not think the way it was published did it any favors. I'd have waited longer and surrounded it with a good superstructure of annotation and maybe even oral history were such available. Instead it was brought out more or less as a finished novel, and it in no wise is. There are great moments in it, but I don't think it was well handled.

Remind me to tell you some time about the night I got loaded with a bunch of DFW scholars and what happened the next morning when I tried to go play D&D.
