In the 500 Songs podcast I'm always talking about, in the episode on Janis he says that she never really sang in her natural voice. That it was all an affectation, an imitation, albeit a very good one. He plays one excerpt where she sings in a lovely soprano that you never would expect, saying that was her real singing voice.

interesting tidbit about that MVP album:
It was unlike anything to ever hit American theaters—as though Eldridge Cleaver had written Easy Rider. The black protagonist not only overpowers the oppressive white cops, but he manages to get away with it. Van Peebles made the film for what was estimated at $150,000 (including a $50,000 loan from Bill Cosby when no one else stepped forward with funding). The shoestring budget raised another problem: how to market a movie with no promotional budget.
The solution was through music. During its filming, not only was there no band hired to play the score, the score itself remained unwritten. Due to some divine astrological quirk, Van Peebles’ secretary was sleeping with one of the members of the then unknown Earth, Wind & Fire.
“They’d never done an album before. I wrote the music, and since I can’t read or write music, I hummed it to them, taught them my musical method,” Van Peebles said to RBMA in 2008. “They played it the way I asked them to and it became a huge hit. Before this, music, even in Hollywood, was not used as a selling tool. Even with a musical, they’d bring it out as a movie, then maybe bring out the album.”

i have the covid, so yesterday was a rare TRIPLE feature, all three excellent:
High Anxiety (USA, 1977 dir. Mel Brooks)
Something Wild (USA, 1986, dir. Jonathan Demme) -- did not expect this to be as good as it was. Featuring Ray Liotta.
Then one I'm sad took me so long:
Wanda (USA, 1970, dir. Barbara Loden). Hard to describe, but in my notes I wrote Jim Jarmusch meets Wes Anderson meets Stroszek. The Wes Anderson bit is from the scene where the main character who isn't Wanda gets drunk and climbs on the hood of a car to yell at some RC model planes. I highly recommend it.

I like the idea of heading across two rivers tonight to hear some music, but I also like the idea of staying home in NJ and watching a movie with Mrs McG.

Well, the live music part is appealing, but the trekking-home-across-two-rivers-on-two-subway-trains-and-a-bus-from the-Port-Authority-in-the-middle-of-the-night part is less appealing.

Cool! My mom turned me and my dad on to him. She also loves George Strait, has done since high school, she wanted to see him in concert but the tickets were expensive, then I remebered I bought a booklet for him through a tape collextion, so I gave it to her for Christmas. I used to listen to conctemporary country all the time when I was younger before Florida Georgia line came out and all the bro country stuff took over. I used to like Taylor swift when she was country but after she went pop, county seemed to go “pop” with it. I also became accustomed to 80s 90s country through my mom and when they’d play it on the radio. Nowadays I’ve been going back to 60s all the way to Carter Family folk!

Last year late at night I was scrolling through A.M. radio and found a station from Nashville that played classic country, (I don’t live in Nashville) and they were playing “Heartaches by the number” a song they used to ply instead of school bells at my high school. I was like “finally some good country on the radio!” Where I live, there’s about 5 country stations in the market. They switched the long time alt station to a country station, and there’s about as many religious stations here as there are country, heck, one of the country stations changed into a religious station!
