Favoriting January 2, 2024: Audio Curiosities from Lost Media Archive: The Unknown Museum Cassette Vol. 1 (1983)
I'm sick and have lost my voice, so I'm presenting something a little different today from the Lost Media archives.1 of several cassettes made for The Lost Media Archive to preserve the audio that you hear when visiting The Unknown Museum, in Mill Valley, Ca. Curated by Mickey McGowan. "The Unknown Museum is an “exploration into America’s brain.” Somewhat like the scientists shrunken and injected into a human body in the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage, a visit to the Unknown Museum is a complete immersion in conceptual art and American consumerism. One is confronted by mass quantities of items that may be familiar or seem that way—products of a lifetime of carefully collecting and arranging everyday objects from the late 1940s–80s. Functioning as a calm and reflective space, the Unknown Museum encourages recollections of the past and challenges visitors to form their own ideas about what is displayed." Currently the an exhibit, "Recollections… From the Unkown Museum," is on display through March 2024 in Terminal 2, at the San Francisco International Airport, which offers selections and creations culled from a quirky collection of vintage pop culture artifacts. Compiled by Mickey McGowan  Side 1   Favoriting Unknown Museum Tape #1  Cassette  "The sound was always vital; I mixed tapes from my recorded archives to enhance the experience of visiting the Museum. I could create subtly surrealistic moments in sound by overdubbing a dog barking when a cat is purring, having Kennedy's motorcade approaching Dealey Plaza, WILLIAM SHATNER reciting from the Transformed Man, etc. I called it "the perfect moment" when something on the audiotape coincided perfectly with what you were looking at (for example, having the "Wedding March" come on just as you spotted the "Bride" display). Imagine viewing the Star Trek display and hearing the voice of MR SPOCK singing "Highly Illogical" (from the great Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy album) - that would be a perfect moment. Or if you were in the "Mom and Dads' Room" looking at a golf trophy and the voice of Arnold Palmer came on telling you how to play the 9th hole. I wanted to run out (like Groucho Marx on You Bet Your Life) with a prize for the people who experienced those! In general, I selected recordings that incorporated sound effects, natural sounds and the spoken word with orchestra. Perhaps that was the direct influence of television which, if you think about it, does just that." -Mickey McGowan (Incredibly Strange Music Vol. 1, pg. 102)

Compiled by Mickey McGowan  Side 2   Favoriting Unknown Museum Tape #1  Cassette  As you wander through the museum looking at curated piles of vintage pop culture debris, sounds of the past fade in and out like a fever dream, from a brain filing through memories of television shows, radio, records, and newscasts. I'll play as much as I can till time runs out! The other cassettes were transferred at the wrong speed. If I can correct the audio, I will play more in the future :)

Living in a small town can be very challenging. There just isn't anything like this anywhere near the Mid-Valley. I would have to drive an hour or so, and then in PDX, I could probably find something equivalently quirky. But places like this just don't exist in my town.
