One of my favorite moviegoing experiences was seeing 2001 at the Harvard Astronomical Society in a room full of professors. They all laughed unnervingly hard at HAL's shutdown scene-- I got the impression they knew something I didn't.

My mother laughed aloud watching 2001 in a theater in ‘68. Not sure she connected HAL to IBM, but the 9000 series was far removed from the mainframe model number she used at the bank she worked.

I have actually seen some robots on campus. Most of them are used for completely inane purposes and as Mark Hurst recommends, should be chucked into the nearest body of water. One robot was used for good though. It's fucntion was to assist as like a service animal.
