The whole Don imitates Bob thing was kind of silly. American folk was derived from UK folk. So a Scot would be closer to the source. Donovan heard folk music as his everyday culture. Bob heard records. Sunshine and Mellow were, like Blond on Blond perfect albums that have stood the test if time.

& Bob & Don both knew it. If Don fanboyed a bit - & Dylan played up to the hype around it. A bit like 'Beatles vs. Stones' maybe. It's interesting the way various others reacted to / dealt with the power & supremacy of Dylan as Writer & cultural force. For example Phil Ochs with humor & anxiety...

Avatar 10:12am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yars yard - whole question of Dylan's relation to Psychedelia. I think of it (as analogy @ least) as Bob was pushing the doors of perception combining ganja & speed - very Kerouac Beat Poet - before acid quite hit exactly. It would've been impossible without Dylan broadening the parameters of what was allowed in Rawk~Pop thematically - mentally even. Yet when the whole Studio Effects revolution in Production & Technology hit - Bob had bowed out of imminent Messiahood, had the cycle accident - what the opposite way, morphing & ahead of the game again...
That Bob was stoned & speeding always seemed self-evident ...but the particulars of his other Drug Use remain surprisingly unknown to me ...they always say he was smacked out by the time his peak Trilogy (Bringing Back Home - Highway61 - Blonde) was over - correlating to him Dropping Out from the dropout culture... 'Tom Thumb's Blues' always spoke to me of that...

Hup Hup Spiral was ON the original issue in 1966. The reissues (some of them) changed the track order, moving the jokey military lock-groove "hup, hup, hup, hup...." from the end of side one to the other side of the lp. The rest of it's pretty much as-was; it was cheaply done, just the artist and a Revox open-reel deck

I got to see Otway perform Liberty Valance in somebody's apartment living-room. They had one of the three pressings of that single that were made without the vocals, the deal being that he would show up in person to add them, for whomever came forward to complain or whatever about the factory defect. It was the third and last, and took several years to get back to him. Anyway....it felt weird and awkward and incredibly close, but was hilarious nonetheless.
