Keep 'em. You don't owe it to anyone in the future to make the clean-up easier. And there may come a time before we die when late capitalism cannot bring music and books and whatnot to us, and I'd frankly like to have a pile in reserve at that point.

MONICA!!! Yay! Perfect Monday! So as to CDs . . . I have about 4000 CDs, and when I last moved I held every one in Marie Kondo fashion and asked if it gave me joy. Every one of them did! I don't trust hard drive storage . . .

Hold on to your prized CDs -- if Rough Trade is selling used cassette tapes in Rockefeller Center, it's only a matter of time before CDs become highly collectible -- and CDs are the last medium to include liner notes, some of which are superb and will never be re-issued

I've also come to see the idea of "simplifying" by selling physical music/movies/etc. as a bit of an illusion-- in most cases it just feels like a means of consolidating your dependency on "the cloud," which is an increasingly bleak prospect.

My advice would be to purge enough CDs to feel a little more free & easy, but hold onto at least a little trove of creme de la creme good ones. I justify my record & cd hoarding by imagining a (quite plausible) future where a reliable wi-fi connect is not a given... plus I imagine you have a ton of great CDs whose contents can't be found on youtube, spotify etc. Just the Chronological Classics label alone....

A year or two back we were going to try to at least put the CDs in wallets and get rid of the cases -- but they no longer make wallets, it seems, that can hold the insert cards and liner notes. We had to nope out hard and fast. Put the DVDs in a wallet and tore the pages out of some smaller ones to hold WFMU premiums. And the piles continue to grow here ...

Guitar tech is going in both directions: increasing focus on vacuum tube hand built stuff on one end, and increasing interest in digital (class D) amps with all kind of digital modeling for amp and cabinet simulation. Being formally in the industry, and hubby still is, parts are a definite issue. Handy's turntable trouble was very fixable. Other things, circuit boards, resistors, capacitors gets very messy. I've been using Ubuntu Studio for a while.

Whenever I got a new computer, I used to install a dual-boot system, in case I needed to use Windows. And some laptops used to require that you leave Windows installed, for certain system reasons.

But a few months ago, I had a system failure (I accidentally corrupted the boot system), I was about to install the new version of Ubuntu Studio , and I realized that I hadn't booted into Windows in five years, and I didn't know where my windows discs, or whatever TF passwords Microsoft requires to fetch a new installation image, so I just installed Ubuntu Studio by itself, and it works just fine. Buh-bye, Microsoft. I guess Ubuntu includes substitutes for the proprietary MS system stuff Linux used to need on my laptop.
