I've loved studying this about music scenes, whether or not the geography had an impact. I know MPLS's scene was insular because many touring bands wouldn't take that route since there weren't many destinations beyond it that far north/west.

a little bit random, but reminded me of the smart juvenile delinquents a worked in a supermarket with who had their own idiosincratic slang and nicknames, like calling people immigrants as a term of endearment, like c'mere ya immigrant or in a derogatory way, like don't talk to him, he's an immigrant, don't know if it was derived from the chaplin short, but today it feels a bit resonant

i'd say bob dylan is a character and a persona as you can judge from his self portrait album

This is such a salient observation - the artist as character. I see 'artists' in their 70's still invested in the charade.

I was there in the early 2000s but not the era in the book. I would find it really tricky to attempt a similar project for a scene that I experienced first-hand...

I have mixed feelings about Patton. There are the extreme fanboys (and girls, but usually boys) and then the people who have the sort of instant gag reflex. I do think he was at his best in the early '90s though. I am not a big fan of his more recent bands (but that's just me).

my first exposure to Mike Patton was when he filled in for EYE in Naked City. At first we didn't know who it was because he was wearing a gimp mask.

My biggest Neil Hamburger moment in the classroom was the time I pulled a tablecloth out from under a set of dishes (to demonstrate the concept of inertia to my physics students) and then looking out and seeing just blank expressions. And realizing it was still just 9:02 AM, and I had 43 minutes to go.

I never thought of it before but Faith No More's early Patton stuff might be making fun of Metallica, another SF band. The way it goes from schmaltzy melodic to maximum crunch in the span of a millisecond, like a jump scare, always struck me as very... well, silly. Maybe great minds think alike on that one.
