Well, it seems to be about the same size, if a little more upscale. But many of the same businesses are still there, which is heartening Wax N Facts smelled exactly the same (though had a real dearth of R.E.M. rarities -- we must have bought them all in high school!). I think the Clermont is still there but is now a boutique hotel? The mallification of Ponce was completed after they flooded it with cops via City Hall East -- which is now a mall. They're pulling the same stunt on the east side with Cop City.

We stayed in downtown Decatur, which in my memory was just like the courthouse, some bail bondsmen, MARTA, the library, and the high school but is now all bars and restaurants and shops. Walkable, at least. Though I did bang my head on several tree branches they allow to grow unconscionably low over the sidewalks!

The Majestic is still there, but plans for breakfast there Sunday fell apart. Fortunately, there's a Waffle House in downtown Decatur now.

Oh, we have sidewalks where I live, and adults walk on them.

But my stereotype of a southern town (and many northern towns, to be fair) is that adults drive everywhere. Hence, no need to make sidewalks useable, if they exist at all.

ok, i wanted a ridiculous dj name that wasn't overly pretentious. Growing up in the suburban South, I wanted imagery something as far from the South as possible, therefore, North. Guinea, has often been used in the english language to describe the exotic (the west african coast [also where gold was taken for the guinea coin], the north south american coast, and there's also the rodent], and Hills gave the name a rustic quality..... hence, ngh.. then after I moved to nyc, people just started calling variations of ngh, so, it stuck...

Loved that interview. So good to hear from Debora Iyall, loved the stories regarding SF in the early 80s.Mabuhay and I-Beam are legendary places to lose your mind and reconstitute it in the same night.

Speaking of avatars... Mine is only a mild Booker T reference. I had a lot of onions in the garden this year that never bulbed out. Hence, well, green onions.

I completely missed their set at the Bond Street Complex last night. I didn't know their was a third group on the bill.

PJ:

I also caught the Booker T. show. I thought it was good, and I'm glad I went, but the least of the three shows I've seen with him over the past decade or so (once with the DBTs, once on the tour for his memoir/CD in 2019). The mix was too bass heavy (drowning out the guitar and organ at times), and, while I am usually all in favor of musical expression, that does not extend to bass or drum solos, which seemed interminable at City Winery.

I can't remember where I heard it, and it was probably via WFMU, but: guy visits a remote, isolated people, where the sound of loud drumming surrounds him day and night. He asks "does the drumming ever stop? it's driving me crazy!" He's told "when the drumming stops--very very bad." He asks why, and is told "when drumming stops, very bad because.... bass solo."
