I noticed that the Paris transit authority has been removing seats in subway stations, putting spikes or weirdly shaped plastic things to deter homeless people from sleeping there. The next move could be putting a sculpture of them instead (I'm afraid to give them ideas)

@Don. I actually like the cold weather, so that part makes December enjoyable. Could do without some of the holiday, uh, "spirit," however.
Avatar 3:56am
Don in Tampere:

fred, I think I remember seeing similar things in London a long time ago. So where the hell are they supposed to sleep? It seems so evil, and frankly, in the run-up to Christmas, exactly the opposite of what the person who's birth Christmas is ostensibly celebrating was preaching about.
Avatar 3:57am
Don in Tampere:

I think that the pre-Christmas atmosphere in most of Europe is, while still commercial, somehow not quite as cheesy as I remember in the US (or saw the couple of years I lived in Ireland)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02am
Scott67:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02am
Brian D:

To be clear, I'm not saying the sculpture in London is solving any problems. I just think it highlights a more humanistic approach to the problem. Meanwhile, the police in NYC are rounding up homeless people and forcibly checking them into hospitals for psychiatric care.
Avatar 4:02am
Don in Tampere:

The German Christmas markets are of course very commercial, but I find the atmosphere quite nice except when they get too crowded. Haven't managed to get to the Frankfurt one since 2019 though, first canceled due to Covid, then last year's 4th wave, and this year I just have too damn much work to get there before it closes. But I'll at least be there for the ringing of the bells in all the downtown churches at 5 pm on Christmas Eve (the "Stadtgeläut")

Chris Crisco:

I remember back in the 1970s the US tried to go metric. Didn't get very far. I'm still adjusting. I just remember every 10°C is 18°F starting from 32 so 10°C is 50°F 20°C = 68°F 30°C = 86°F and go from there.
Avatar 4:43am
Don in Tampere:

I remember a discussion in the 70s about the US switching to metric, but people got all upset about not keeping their "amurrcan" measurement units. Metric makes so much more sense. Though I am ok with the fact that the French Revolutionaries didn't manage to make their new calendar stick like they did with the metric system. one day off every ten days? no way!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am

It's estimated that here in Canada we spent in excess of a billion dollars converting from imperial to metric, between 1970 and 1985. And everyone still uses both systems simultaneously!!! No one ever really converted. We just use them both now. Ottawa smokes kilos of weed by the pound.
