Hello, all! Today's playlist art is by 7-year-old Florida elementary school student Skyler Lopez.

How colorful! A full, active universe on that sheet.

Heya, James! I wonder if he'll stick to making art.

Are we sure that Lopez image isn't upside down? Mostly judging by the hearts. I'm assuming they're hearts.

.... and Holly too! Hey there!

Oh, there's also a smiley face (lower right corner). I'm going with upside down.

@ rw: Perhaps he painted it while standing on his head?

Tony, could be. You never know with art these days.

Yo, Tony and Tuesday Coultergeists.
Question: how do you keep the rhinoceros you play tuned? Asking for a clueless friend who bought a playable rhino and is stuck on that point.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
WR:

Phillip, I join you on the ramen a little later. Bok choy and perhaps a bolled egg in mine.
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Sem! It's a simple matter of adjusting the angle of the horn.

Tony, this set is totally wacky.

Expecting that rw is going to opine that the Kandinsky is upside down.
  12:27pm

IMHO, Kandinsky kandono wrong.

rw:

WR, Going on the signature I say right side up.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm

Isn't that a Skyler Lopez signature on the lower left of his work?

(jeez, just because I have no meeting calls, I do have work I should be doing... LOL.)
  12:34pm
Dean:

Tyler, Skyler, oops.

Looks good upside down, too.
  12:40pm
Phillip:

Oh wow😁😱 I post tape hiss hiss show.
  12:42pm
Phillip:

I love the tape hiss shows. In the old days I'd record them on my tape deck
  12:42pm
Phillip:

On metal bias cassettes
Avatar 12:42pm
Tony Coulter:

Just figured this recap thing is worth doing, since many of the tapes I play are rare. Thought it'd be good to leave a trace of them in the archives.
  12:43pm
Phillip:

@Tony Coulter 😁👍😊
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Of course, I missed many years of tapes. I may have to replay some of them!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
WR:

Yes, Tony, agreed. It's a good thing.
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Meaning, I missed recapping years' worth of Tape Hiss tapes.
  12:50pm
listener james from westwood:

This is a fine compromise for getting some of these on the record. Glad you're doing it!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
WR:

I hope you eventually get them all recapped, (since this is just the 2nd or 3rd time you've done a recap).
Avatar 12:57pm
Tony Coulter:

That would be ideal. Something to keep me busy for years to come!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm

Avatar 12:58pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, hi, hi, chresti!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
WR:

Quick review of your archive and it looks like Tape Hiss episodes started in April 2012. For round number estimate: 10 years, so another 10 years.
  1:04pm
rw:

Looking at this Kandinsky again. Def not upside down. I see a mermaid at the bottom, a town in the distance and a crazy rocket filled sky. Might be a figure standing at the right. Could just be me though.
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

@ WR: Yeah, it would take me 10 years ... if I stopped playing new tapes on Tape Hiss.
  1:07pm
rw:

If I turn the Lopez upside down I'm getting two alien teddy bears and a psychic eyeball.
  1:12pm
rw:

So... 20 years? I'm hoping to still be alive by then but not holding my breath.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
WR:

Well, you could do two recaps a week, previous week recap, archive recap but I'm thinking I should focus on listening and looking at the two paintings, maybe even do a little work, not suggesting how you do your show.
Avatar 1:16pm
Tony Coulter:

Two recaps is an idea ... or I could replay some fave tapes on the regular Tape Hiss shows, and then recap them.
Avatar 1:28pm
Tony Coulter:

Now if only I had come up with this recap idea years ago, from the beginning....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Yvang:

Maybe it's a great idea for a future Premium as well?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
Yvang:

Wikipedia says Philip glass was involved in Polyrock.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Yvang:

I mean Glass with a capital G
Avatar 1:32pm
Tony Coulter:

He was! He plays keyboards on their first album.
Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

And as for a Tape Hiss-themed premium, I've done that before, but should definitely do it again.
  1:35pm
rw:

Checking back in to see if this a Young Marble Giants track I've never heard.
  1:36pm
rw:

Was not, but now...
  1:39pm
rw:

I first heard YMG from my photo teacher in Junior College. If I remember correctly he played it for the whole large lecture class. Does that kind of thing still happen?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
Yvang:

rw : I am pretty sure this still happen.
Avatar 1:44pm
Tony Coulter:

I had a 5th-grade English teacher who used to perform songs for us himself, with an acoustic guitar. I can remember being subjected to a Gordon Lightfoot song.
  1:46pm
rw:

Yvang, in that case I still have faith.
  1:46pm
rw:

TC, sounds like you weren't so in to it. You should have brought in some of your tapes!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:47pm

Many WFMU DJ's are teachers, we should ask them...
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

@ rw: I guess I became a DJ to get back at that 5th-grade English teacher.
Avatar 1:56pm
Tony Coulter:

Trying to remember what I listened to in 5th grade. It's all a blank. I do remember listening to Slade and Elf when I was 13. The big reset came shortly after when I randomly bought Captain Beefheart's "Mirror Man."
  2:02pm
listener james from westwood:

Lots of soundtracks when I was in fifth grade. Mom had a ton of Broadway and film scores.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
Rich in Washington:

We had to listen to our teachers play autoharp and sing horribly. I swear it was a state school requirement.
  2:03pm
listener james from westwood:

Bronwyn B and Devin E. Levins would be right at home with her records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
Rich in Washington:

I can also remember (but don't know the title to) the scratchy record they'd play for us at nap time in Kindergarten. I am reasonably certain it was an Ella Jenkins record, most likely on Folkways.
The only lyrics I can recall is 'Now we rest. Tuck head beneath your wing..." sung in a tremulous, almost Mrs. Miller voice.
  2:08pm
rw:

5th grade for me was AM radio and whatever the older kids in the neighborhood were blasting from their cars; Slade and Black Sabbath, etc. 7th grade I got an FM radio and found the far ends of the dial.
  2:11pm
rw:

It's amazing how random events in childhood end up shaping our lives!

That's why it's important to get Beefheart into the ears of our youth as early as possible.

Fifth grade: Hair OST, Holst's The Planets.

Yesterday my son flopped on the sofa, so I put on the Library of Congress Jelly Roll Morton discs. The dulcet tones of Jelly Roll's voice and playing knocked him out for a good hour or two.
