for you non-Southwesterners, you can literally drive 100 miles without seeing a gas station. PLEASE be careful should you travel thru the desert. Be prepared, and don't go off the trails. Europeans are sometimes fascinated with the desert and it's heat and a number have died.

I have hardly seen any snakes in the desert, but I don't actually live there. They pretty much don't care about you, unless you bother them or surprise them.

I was in a zoo in Germany and the handler came out and *removed the snake and fed it*. I was so scared that I was completely paralysed and crying (silently). My friends had to carry me out. :-(

GG, i was walking with family down a road in Arizona and we came across a rattlesnake that had been squished by a car - the same road we had just walked in the opposite direction before we turned around. We missed Mr Rattler by just a few minutes.

Garter snakes, black rat snakes, rough earth snakes, and brown water snakes are the usual suspects at Maison Bastille. A couple copperheads have been spotted in mulch piles in the neighborhood, but I've yet to see one

We get snakes of a sort in the UK - adders mostly. There was one at the garden centre where I used to work and I ran BACKWARDS when I saw it.

You can hear coyotes howl at night. And GREAT star-gazing. i drove with my daughter last summer out to lay on our backs and watch a meteor shower.

But again - stay on the roads, it's still the wild west out there.

I was unprepared for the number of snakes when we moved here. Many have relocated on their own. We bought the house from a woman in her 90s who had stopped giving a damn about the yard since she was in her 70s. They were everywhere. Once we had the yard cleared, several of the neighbors were mentioning they'd seen their fist snake in years. Imagine that? We even had a couple in the basement
