Has it always been the case that avant jazz types have collaborated with noise/experimental types, or did Brötzmann really lead the way?

@LG: yes, on that Catch of a Ghost track.
Avatar 🦀 9:46am

It is impressive that Brötzmann plays with new and much younger people at his age. He could just do tours with the old timers and probably fill a few jazz clubs and festivals with no problem.
Thx, Jeff G!

That's an interesting question, @DJpeterDE. I wonder if those pairings developed differently in the US and in Europe or Japan.

Thanks for reading that, Jeff. Really interesting. Haven't heard many artists talking about growing up in post-war in Germany. The silence of the elders of post-war babies was deafening - and infuriating to many.
Avatar 🦀 10:17am
Listener Gregory:

That was a *very* interesting interview excerpt you read, Jeff. There is clearly a sense in which early Euro free jazz and parts of the Black free jazz movement seemed intent on expressing anger. The sources of that anger are very different but ultimately converged to some degree in the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Jeff Golick:

Amazingly, that book appears to be available as a legit free PDF via the publisher: www.wolke-verlag.de...
Avatar 🦀 10:24am
Listener Gregory:

@Stork, have recently re-viewed a few Fassbinder films, and this was clearly a motivation for much of his work as well.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:24am
Andrew Waterloo:

Neubauten talk about the silence from the elders in their book as well.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:25am
DJpeterDE:

@zzz yes I’ve heard that wolf eyes collab! After it I saw set of them w/o Braxton and was less interested
Avatar 🦀 10:28am
Stork:

@L Gregory - yes, that's a solid connection to Fassbinder. It's the reason most Germans can't stand his films. Berlin Alexanderplatz is really unbearable to them. His gayness bothered them too, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am
Jeff Golick:

Oh wait -- sorry --- boiiiingggg! correction #2: that's only the first 9 pages of the book in that link. More info here: www.wolke-verlag.de...

hyde:

@Stork did the book Berlin Alexanderplatz also get a negative reaction in Germany when it was published?
Avatar 🦀 10:35am
hyde:

also, while i am deeply in love with Fassbinder's films, it seems clear that there were many good reasons available for disliking him as a person
Avatar 🦀 10:36am
Stork:

I don't know, hyde. Probably not by younger critics - the older ones probably refused to read it. Fassbinder stuck his finger in the wounds - and kept it there. And yeah, Fassbinder was coked-out monster for much of his life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
StringOFperils:

Berlin Alexanderplatz was hugely popular when it was published, in Weimar Germany, in 1929. It was biting satire about all the BS going on around them, and all the things slowly happening to them. It was not popular among the sinsiter and calculating state that was salivating behind the curtain, and it would also have displeased Teutonic literary conservatives who would have expressed disgust at Döblin's gutteral street language. (He was a really popular writer in swingin' Berlin already for a long time).

Why is the Chicago Tentet so different from Brotzmann's other output? Things are clearly composed and arranged to some degree, but the whole tone and method seems very different from 90% of his output.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am

Alright, @Hams!

McPhee was part of the core tentet iirc. I saw Tentet +2 in SF in 2000 and William Parker was one of the +2. Can't recall who the other one was atm.
Avatar 🦀 10:54am
Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, yes, the influence of Vandermark et al. is significant. It just seems to me that he didn't do this kind of project at other times and places, even though it was hugely successful in every way. IMHO!
Also, I think McPhee is an official member of the 10.
