On listening to an anthology called History Of The Units (which gets a UK release via Community Library this week) I wanted to learn more about them. What I found was a situationist group with an anti-fashion, pro-art manifesto who used to smash up fake guitars every night, make their own films, share stages with the Dead Kennedys and draw as much from punk as they did from their local gay disco scene. When I got in touch with Scott Ryser in SF, he was kind enough to answer my questions - even the ones disrespectful to Devo..." "The Budos Band is an American instrumental band from Staten Island, New York, formed in 2005. AllMusic describes the group as a "doom rock Afro-soul big band with a '70s touch" that joins "musical universes from trippy psychedelia and Afro-funk to '70s hard rock and late-'60s soul." They have described themselves as "70's Psychedelic Instrumental Music," and "Afro-soul inspired by Ethiopian music with a soul undercurrent" and "sprinkled a little bit of sweet 60's stuff on top." One reviewer described the band as “sounding as if Quentin Tarantino was the music supervisor for a Bond film". Their more recent albums have incorporated sounds from 1970s jazz, funk, Afro-Beat, underground rock, and proto-metal. They have been signed to Daptone Records throughout their career." Höga Nord Rekords

2017

"San Francisco based producer Al Lover’s list of collaborations contain names like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Goat and White Fence, and he has remixed bands like The Night Beats and Thee Oh Sees. Except from producing mind-altering music, Al Lover is also the official DJ of Levitation and tours Europe extensively. Al Lover’s double album release “Zodiak versions” on Höga Nord Rekords (2015) opened up for a beautiful cooperation between the label and the artist and now ~ on this EP, a third player flavors the music and that is Cairo Liberation Front (CLF). Residing in Tilburg this collective represents the future of European club music lends equally from house, punk and psychedelia, filtered through generations of hedonistic groove ~The combination of Al Lover’s use of samples, drum machines, live instrumentation and analog synthesizers, clashes beautifully with the fierce energy of the CLF’s sound of cracked software, American hip-hop, Euro house and Arabic rhythms." Brandy  (Wish You Was) Madball Baby   Favoriting The Gift Of Repetition  Total Punk  2020  New York's Brandy are back with their sophomore LP and first for TOTAL PUNK! "The Gift of Repetition" is an eight track study in just that; loud, plodding and rhythmic. It will have you bobbing your head till it breaks clean off your neck! The band share vocal duties, often chanting over each other, with lyrics that are singular in vision; bleak with a grin. There's synth on a few tracks, with mind-melting results! When the only other bands that come to mind are A-Frames, Lamps and Mayyors, you are obviously doing something right. Pulsing, throbbing, and 100% TOTAL PUNK!!!"    0:22:49 (Pop-up)
B Boys  Energy   Favoriting Dada  Captured Tracks  2017  New York’s B Boys (Andrew Kerr, Brendon Avalos, Britton Walker) find inspiration in the chaos that surrounds them: the aggressive attitude and sonic lawlessness of the city they live, work, and breathe in every day. Their raw, yet meticulous style is characterized by rhythmic complexity, commanding riffs, and introspective lyrics that are as playful and self-aware as they are cutting. B Boys have toured the U.S. and Europe extensively, supporting acts such as Parquet Courts, Merchandise, Shame, Sunflower Bean, and Thee Oh Sees.    0:26:07 (Pop-up)
Lewsberg  Left Turn   Favoriting In This House  Lewsberg Records  2020  Lewsberg are a band operating entirely on their own terms. Shannon & The Clams  Midnight Wine   Favoriting Year Of The Spider  Eye Sound  2021  Shannon and the Clams is an indie garage punk quartet based in Oakland, California. Known for a vintage sound that incorporates elements of doo-wop, classic R&B, garage psych, and surf, Shannon and the Clams has drawn comparisons to both Buddy Holly and 1960s girl groups. They are also said to love "music from '50s oldies to '80s punk". The band includes vocals from bassist Shannon Shaw, guitarist Cody Blanchard, and keyboardist Will Sprott, along with drums by Nate Mahan. Shaw and Blanchard met at the California College of the Arts, where they began performing together. Shaw is also a member of queercore punk outfit Hunx and His Punx    0:34:50 (Pop-up)
Silverbacks  Dunkirk   Favoriting Fad  Central Tones  2020  Silverbacks are a band from Dublin. In the last two years, Silverbacks were more or less born in earnest, becoming what they are today — a band with late ’70s art-rock and punk and ’90s indie in its DNA, all of it tangled and then burst back open by their three-guitar arrangements. They began releasing new singles: “Just For A Better View,” “Dunkirk,” “Just In The Band.” Arriving across 2017 and 2018, each was infectious and sardonic and vivid in its own way — particularly “Dunkirk,” which took its name from the simple fact that Daniel had just gotten home from seeing the movie when Kilian played him the demo. The title subsequently inspired an imagined scene of a man in the near future having a midlife crisis in a beach resort built on a former warzone.    0:38:02 (Pop-up)

Mr. Bongo Record Club Vol. 1

Mr. Bongo

2016

this six and a half minute instrumental delight was originally released in 1974 on US label Editions Makossa. The track was written performed by a group of musicians gathered from various places in the Rwenzori Mountains up from Kalembe, Uganda near the Congo border. Going by the name of The Rwenzori’s, the band were heavily influenced by soukous and congolese artists like Franco (a major figure in 20th-century Congolese music, and African music in general), as well as being drawn to genres such as jazz and funk. What came out of these inspired musicians was this flaming fusion of soulful afrobeat and at nearly seven minutes long there’s enough brass, rhythm and groove to satisfy any funky soul searcher…

Fumaça Preta  Toda Pessoa   Favoriting Fumaça Preta  Soundway  2014  "The riotous party music played by international ensemble Fumaça Preta (pronounced “Foomassa Pretta” and meaning “Dark Smoke”) combines deep, fuzzy psychedelic funk inspired by from Brazilian macumba, batacuda, and latter-day tropicalia to James Dark brown, analog electronica, Turkish psychedelia, garage rock, and post-punk. Through his many moves, Portuguese-Venezuelan manufacturer and drummer Alex Figueira — creator of Amsterdam’s Music with Spirit Records — produced the acquaintance of Stuart Carter (guitars, Moog, body organ) and bassist Wayne Porch, both from the U.K. garage area funk device the Grits, after getting a gig, and later on, fulfilled São Paulo native-cum-American resident Joel Rocks (owner from the iconic Tropicalia in Furs record shop and barter store), who became business lead vocalist. After very much excited discussion, the quartet arrived collectively in Figueira’s Barracão Studio room."    0:54:38 (Pop-up)
POW!  Switchboard Scientist   Favoriting Hi-Tech Boom    2014  "Deep in the graveyard SF a young hand with black and cracked nails is pushing up through a broken pile of E-slag. Bitter teeth tear through server cables and motherboards, trying to be freed from the ever deepening sludge of tech waste...the Iphone is the new Styrofoam cup. Stepping over them, eyes glazed, feet dragging, blank face aglow in the eerie luminescence of the smart(?) phones underfoot, is the spirit of these songs. San Francisco has long been filling up with noobs…but now we face the most dangerous, the most egregious and blandest of them all... people with lots of money. Bona Dish  8AM   Favoriting The Zargoza Tapes: 1981-82  Captured Tracks  2013  Bona Dish were a scratchy pop punk group from Hertfordshire villages, brought together by their love of the Velvets, Supremes and each other. They were cool, handsome and gorgeous. The songs are simple but at the same time complex. The two girls, two boys line-up added a tension that was both sexual and musically fragile. You felt it might all fall apart any second but it rarely did. After their “cassette in a tube” ploy worked for John Peel play, the band released a cassette on InPhaze and disbanded not long after.    1:15:15 (Pop-up)
Pozi  Whitewashing   Favoriting Whitewashing  PRAH Recordings  2020  You can link themes of anxiety all the way back to drummer/vocalist Toby Burroughs, violinist/vocalist Rosa Brook and bassist/vocalist Tom Jones’ 2019 LP PZ1. It’s in the music of their wire-pulled-tight post-punk, which has always been gripped with tension; and it’s in their lyrics, whether they’re trying to avoid the dull glow of phone addiction, dealing with social anxieties, or addressing national-scale scandals such as the Grenfell tower tragedy. Babs is very fond of this band.    1:18:25 (Pop-up)
The Creeping Nobodies  Blowing On Knots   Favoriting Augurs & Auspices  The Creeping Nobodies  2007  The Creeping Nobodies began as a one-off performance for a tribute night to the UK band The Fall, and were put together by Derek Westerholm.[The tribute night was held on September 21, 2001 at the El Mocambo club in Toronto, and the band name "The Creeping Nobodies" came from the name of a fictitious band mentioned on a Fall record sleeve. Immediately afterwards, the band became its own entity, investigating a wider range of musical influences. The band released many of their records on Blocks Recording Club, including Sound of Joy,recorded with Wharton Tiers, and a 2007 split 12" with the band Anagram.Blocks was a worker co-operative which also released records by Final Fantasy, Ninja High School, Katie Stelmanis, Lenin I Shumov, The Hank Collective, Fucked Up, and The Phonemes, among others. Other Creeping Nobodies CD and vinyl releases appeared on Deleted Art, fromSCRATCH, Bloodworks Music, Kosher Rock Records, and on a number of compilation albums.    1:21:08 (Pop-up)
Medio Mutante  Another Land   Favoriting Eadem Mutata Resurgo  585205 records DK  2015  The band has released 12" and 7" records. Medio Mutante means "Half Mutant" in Spanish. Electro-wave synth pop influenced by hip-hop, jazz, Latin freestyle and New Wave records from Europe, America and Japan, Medio Mutante wrings a mutated blend of raw and propulsive energy from their limited analogue gear.    1:25:00 (Pop-up)
Nancy  Pleasure Pen   Favoriting The 7 Foot Tall Post-Suicidal Feel Good Blues  B3SCI Records  2021  This could be The Bay City Rollers Shang a Lang played at 33rpm It’s got the sexy swagger of a Fat White Family Glam Rock floorboard thumper played on a warped piece of vinyl on a dodgy turntable featuring a guitar that sounds as though it’s been recorded on the tail end of an old TDK C120. You know the sound I’m sure. It’s what all those John Peel Shows on the internet sound like after half an hour. Think Bolan riding that white swan on a flickering black & white TV screen in 1972 surrounded by disinterested eight-year olds waiting for the puppets to arrive and then replace the kids with the adults we are today. Old, demoralised and in search for something new that really shouldn’t be allowed to happen. This will puzzle the listener in the same way that The Jesus and Mary Chain confused us.    1:28:09 (Pop-up)

2014

Karl Hector & the Malcouns + Follow Artist Based in Munich, the multidimensional Karl Hector & the Malcouns play a wildly hybridized meld of Krautrock, neo-psychedelia, jazz-funk, and Afro-beat. The brainchild of visionary guitarist, producer, and songwriter JJ Whitefield (Jan Weissenfeldt), keyboardist Thomas Myland, and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Zdenko Curulija, the band has functioned in lineups ranging from a quartet to a big band. Whitefield also founded Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers -- two bands whose raw approach to analog recording and retro-funk revivalism opened the door for labels like Daptone and Truth & Soul.

Yavuz Plak

1995

The band was founded end of 1967 by Aziz Azmet, Murat Ses, Cahit Berkay, Hasan Sel and Engin Yörükoğlu. They are one of the pioneering bands in Turkish rock music during their early career and one of the founders of Turkish folk rock (or Anatolian rock). They have been active for over 40 years. The band uses multi-layered dynamism in the Turkish folk genre to create a sonic similarity with pop music's dynamism.

1:39:23 (Pop-up)
Anjali  Misty Canyon   Favoriting World of Lady A  Beggars Banquet / Wilja  2003  "A photo accompanying Anjali's The World of Lady A pictures a busty, tattooed, pouting brunette in a retro-glamorous dress, and the voice heard on the opener is a breathy purr similar to Kahimi Karie (sample lyrics include "you can do what you want with me" and "king of hearts/oh, won't you take me"). Looking closer, however, it becomes clear that, in the photo, Anjali is standing in front of a mixing desk, and in the credits, she's the producer and songwriter for the entire album -- plus some guitars, plus synth, plus a string chart on one song. Obviously, this is not the sex kitten of 30 years ago, or even ten. Yes, Anjali's looks and sensual voice may draw listeners in, but the songs and productions on her third solo album, The World of Lady A, prove she's much more than just a passing fancy. Her songs come from an organic band rather than Kahimi Karie's sample-driven pop. And using the same musicians on most tracks, she quotes the grooviest sources for her songs: swinging '60s pop, Bollywood funk, Ennio Morricone, and the brassy bombast heard on many early-'70s rock records (the Who's "My Wife" comes to mind)..." Maxed Out On Distractions

Lollipop Records

2014

"Corners was an L.A. band that did everything their own way—they made a left-turn into bleaked-out post-punk when everyone else was playing around with psych and garage, and they put together an album of such clarity and vision that it was almost too sharp to touch when everyone else was hiding under reverb and lo-fi. (It helped that everyone in the band was a top-notch audio engineer.) 2014’s Maxed Out On Distractions is destined to be the definitive re-discovery when the future comes back to look at Lolipop Records, and every indication was that the next record would be the album that made them into something timeless." Paul Leary  Born Stupid   Favoriting Born Stupid  Shimmy Disc  2021  Paul Leary is an American musician and music producer from Austin, Texas, best known as the lead guitarist and occasional lead vocalist for the American rock band Butthole Surfers. He is also the producer of a number of songs and albums by other bands, including U2, Sublime, Meat Puppets, Daniel Johnston, The Reverend Horton Heat, Pepper, Maggie Walters, Bad Livers, Slightly Stoopid, The Refreshments, Tumbledryer Babies, and Sludge Buzzard. Leary produced Sublime with Rome's debut album, Yours Truly.    1:52:34 (Pop-up)
Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain  Slave To The Rhythm   Favoriting Live in London 2  Self Released  2009  The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele players, using instruments bought with loose change, which believes that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the Ukulele. A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is a funny, virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping obituary of rock-n-roll and melodious light entertainment featuring only the “bonsai guitar” and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies. There are no drums, pianos, backing tracks or banjos, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery. Only an astonishing revelation of the rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and singing (and a bit of whistling). Audiences have a good time with the Ukulele Orchestra. Going from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana via Otis Redding and Spaghetti Western soundtracks, the Orchestra takes us on “a world tour with only hand luggage” and gives the listener “One Plucking Thing After Another”. Using instruments small and large, in high and low registers, whether playing intricate melodies, simple tunes, or complex chords, and sitting in chamber group format dressed in formal evening wear, the Orchestra uses the limitations of the instrument to create a musical freedom as it reveals unsuspected musical insights. Both the beauty and vacuity of popular and highbrow music are highlighted, the pompous and the trivial, the moving and the amusing. Sometimes a foolish song can touch an audience more than high art; sometimes music which takes itself too seriously is revealed to be hilarious. You may never think about music in the same way once you’ve been exposed to the Ukes’ depraved musicology.    1:56:08 (Pop-up)

The algorithm from where? Any site in particular, or just like all of 'em?

I don't think I've ever learned anything useful from what Amazon is always recommending to me. Tho I hardly use Amazon anymore. Pandora was an interesting novelty at first, but it's been years since I've used it.

I was in a band named after a type of Japanese noodles at one point in my life.

lol thanks guys! yes! lets hope these suggestions are better than your Wish ads that pop up in your facebook
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm

yes is pandora still around?

Cameron Pretendre:

I keep getting these ‘picked just for you’ concert listings emails from Ticketmaster. They are the most generic / mainstream shows and nothing I would ever attend. Their algorithm sucks worse than their service fees.

Derek Westerholm:

Fab, I've been using Spotify for this show (and in general)... Though I didn't know just how evil they had become / have been just the past couple of weeks. For the "Egg Punk" show I chased "Egg Punk" & "Devocore" tags on Bandcamp. I lean towards Bandcamp, and buy what I can... We've been thinking of re-aligning our big-name streaming service loyalities.

RIGHT?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm

oh yeah we are definitely moving over to tidal

I’m sure our ticketmaster craptastic picks are exactly the same. 🤨
Avatar 9:02pm
Mr Fab:

Ah, Spotify. I tried it and quickly discarded it years ago, really don't like how it worked even before I learned about all the other crap. Bandcamp is great, but I don't get any RIYL suggestions from them.

Oh yeah, Hype Machine! I used to write a music blog, and that was a big deal to us blog-folk. Wonder if it's still around... Pandora is, it got absorbed into SiriusXM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
DJ Babs:

aw thanks scottt! I'm always delighted by dereks picks because he keeps them under wraps
