I actually saw a short dictionary Gaillard wrote for this made-up "jive talk." Very interesting and funny!

Other times they're clever quotes, like those two from the "Mothers-in-Law" theme that i heard in a fairly recent piece someone here played about a couple years ago.

	12:40pm Listener Robert: It was "Spectrum" by Atomic Forest that was played on 3 different WFMU programs in early February of 2020. You know they had to have put that in for some nut like me to recognize, and they made it difficult by disguising it but clearly were not ripping it off.

	12:43pm Listener Robert: Do any of the rest of you ever notice these things that constitute almost inside jokes in music -- not truly inside, because it's all PUBLIC knowledge, but just OBSCURE AND OBSCURED? Like they want to see who gets it?
	🥁 ♥ 12:47pm Will the Sound Guy: I definitely hear things inside of other things... eg: the same beat, bass line, or melody... sometimes when a sample contains something, I'll hear both the original song and the song with the sample including lyrics in my head.

	12:52pm Listener Robert: Yes, exactly, Bob. But especially when they quote in ways that very few will recognize, but they're hoping some will catch on and maybe chuckle a bit. Friends think I don't really appreciate art because I approach it analytically, as a scientist. It's just the kick I get out of it.

	12:54pm Listener Robert: And then there are times I suspect pieces of actually being ripped off, like Knotwork's (Blood Axis) music to go with "Wulf and Eadacher" that sounds so much like Morton Gould's main theme to "World War 1".
	12:56pm Listener Robert: I was at a performance of theirs and they denied knowledge of that predecessor piece of music, which I think WAS before their time and that, as a theme to a documentary TV series, they'd've had no reason to hear repeated years later.

	🥁 ♥ 12:59pm doctorjazz: I'm big on catching quotes, references, similarities, "borrowings". It's likely they're not all deliberate (there are only 12 notes, and stuff one hears early in life likely hangs out somewhere in the grey matter), but it's fun noticing these things. Yesterday Doug played a free jazz track by a group called Fire!, which used a bass line with 1 note jumped an octave apart, sounded just like "My Sharona" to me (which of course I posted).
	1:01pm Listener Robert: The resemblance NOBODY else hears because it's at such a high degree of abstraction is that of "Promises" by Barreracudas to "You May Think I'm Crazy" by the Cars.

	🥁 ♥ 1:18pm doctorjazz: I did take a listen to that track, Promises, it must be the one you're referencing LR. I hear what you hear-most of the song is not the same, but the verse does have the same chords, melody, and feel of the verses of the Cars song.

	🥁 ♥ 1:38pm Will the Sound Guy: LR & DrJ that's a big reason why I listen to many programs on WFMU and the streams. there is such a diversity amongst all the DJ'S and programs that I can keep all my music needs in check. I like many different things for different reasons... Sometimes similarities, borrowing, name checks, nods, subtitle references, obvious grabs, quick samples, ect are explained... other times they are just hanging in the breeze. Such an incredible vault of knowledge between the DJ'S and the commenting listeners...

Friends think I don't really appreciate art because I approach it analytically, as a scientist. It's just the kick I get out of it.

	12:56pm Listener Robert: I was at a performance of theirs and they denied knowledge of that predecessor piece of music, which I think WAS before their time and that, as a theme to a documentary TV series, they'd've had no reason to hear repeated years later.

It's likely they're not all deliberate (there are only 12 notes, and stuff one hears early in life likely hangs out somewhere in the grey matter), but it's fun noticing these things. Yesterday Doug played a free jazz track by a group called Fire!, which used a bass line with 1 note jumped an octave apart, sounded just like "My Sharona" to me (which of course I posted).

I like many different things for different reasons... Sometimes similarities, borrowing, name checks, nods, subtitle references, obvious grabs, quick samples, ect are explained... other times they are just hanging in the breeze. Such an incredible vault of knowledge between the DJ'S and the commenting listeners...
