Also featured: A visit with Tuvan overtone singer Kongar-ol Ondar, filmmakers Roco and Adrian Belic and special guest Ralph Leighton of Friends of Tuva
Ondar demonstrated several types of heterophonic overtone singing, or khoomei, and played a couple of songs accompanying himself on the toshpulur, a long-necked lute.
The Belic brothers discussed Ghengis Blues, their Sundance award-winning documentary about Ondar's experiences with American singer Paul Pena. Pena taught himself overtone singing and competed in a national khoomei competition in Tuva. (The film opens in New York at Village East Cinema July 9 and is also playing in the San Francisco bay area and other parts of the U.S.) To learn more about Ondar, Tuvan music, and Tuva visit
