Tuesday, August 26th, 2003, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner
Tune in as Brian Turner chats on the horn with Steve Mackay,
sax-blower from the Stooges' Fun House. He's got great tales to tell
from his whole musical past: he just played with reunited Smegma, and is
back on tour with Iggy and company as we speak playing Roseland in NYC
Wednesday night.
Comic artist Peter Kuper Monday, August 25th, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
The Speakeasy with Dorian

Jim Campilongo
Monday, August 25th, 2003, 3pm - 6pm
on
Trash, Twang and Thunder with Meredith Ochs
Meredith was so taken with the sounds of guitarist Jim Campilongo's string bending that she adopted it as her regular talkover music. Guitar Player magazine liked it so much that they wrote: "Nobody weaves together jazz, blues and country with the silky finesse of Jim Campilongo...bends
emanate from his weathered Deluxe Reverb like ghostly wails from a haunted castle. There are spirits in those licks."
Andrew Bird Sunday, August 24th, 2003, 10pm - Midnight
on
A440 / Stochastic Hit Parade with Bethany Ryker
After saying goodbye to the Windy City last year, Andrew Bird took his violin and a stash of ideas to an Illinois farm where he set up camp in a barn-turned-recording studio to create his latest album, Weather Systems. With this move, Bird left his post as Bowl of Fire front man and ventured into solo territory. Here at WFMU, he again takes matters into his own hands, showing remarkable dexterity by delivering his sinister-charmed lyrics atop lush layers of virtuosic counterpoint and playful accompaniment all with the ease of whistling a tune. This session isn't to be missed; listen in as Bird premieres new material from his latest machinations in the barn.
Rah Bras Saturday, August 23rd, 2003, 5pm - 7pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
Occasionally, Boo Rah, Jean Rah and Isabellarah Rubella emerge from their geodesic dome in Virginia to produce some of the most wacked-out messed-up pop you've ever heard! We're thrilled that they graced the Cherry Blossom Clinic
on one of these occasions! (Originally aired Fall of 2002.)
Don Bolles and Professor Canteloupe
Friday, August 22nd, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
In the land on 10,000 donut shops (Los Angeles, California), there lurks two twisted fellows who produce seriously warped phono-montage hours on KXLU radio every Wednesday night, using nothing but turntables and
tapedecks for their psychedelic immersions. Professor Canteloupe and his partner Don Bolles (the latter being a former member of such luminous outfits as the Germs,
Psychic TV, 45 Grave, the Centimeters and more) have
never so much as touched an MP3 or laptop for their soundmaking purposes. Their show is called Glossolalia, and consists of the duo as human Twister game with
records and tapes over one mixing console for an
hour tonight. Weird exotica, cults speaking in tongues, drones and Mystics of Bali movie audio clips will abound.
Pal Joey
Friday, August 22nd, 2003, 3pm - 5pm
on
Nickel And Dime Radio with $mall ¢hange
NYC house/hip hop producer/legend Pal Joey steps up to the Nickel and Dime
airwaves. Responsible for one of the greatest dance rekkids of all time,
'Hot Music', homeboy could've retired on that schlitz, but instead made
many, many, many other sick joints over the past decade under various
names, including classics Earth People's 'Dance', stuff on his own label
Loop d' Loop, and production for the KRS-One masterpieces 'Love's Gonna
Getcha' and 'Black Cop'. He's a great selecter to boot. Edutainment
f'real...
Huey Meaux
Thursday, August 21st, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
Though best known as a record producer, Huey Meaux "The Crazy Cajun" lit-up late night radio like no other. Broadcasting out of KPFT in Houston back in the 70s, Meaux mixed in raunchy rock and roll with drunken call-ins and prison dedications. Now a convict himself, the pill-fueled frenzy Meaux maintained on the air has made him a legend among lowbrows.
TWO LIVE BANDS: Thee Fine Lines and The Loners
Thursday, August 21st, 2003, 3pm - 6pm
on
Three Chord Monte with Joe Belock
Bashing their way out of Springfield, Missouri, Thee Fine Lines bring their 60s-inspired punk rock to WFMU on their first trip to the East Coast! Also appearing are The Loners, rescheduled from Blackout 2003! You won't believe the racket being bashed out by these North Carolina rockers is made by only 2 people! Tune in to hear them belt out their soulful screamers on their first trip to New Jersey.

Lost Sounds Saturday, August 16th, 2003, 5pm - 7pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
From Memphis comes this dark, deeply funny, aggressive no-wavish punk rock band! Featuring Alicja formerly of the Clears and Jay from the Reatards, their album "Black Wave" is one of the best things Terre's tired ears have heard in a long time. (This is an encore presentation from last Fall.)
Felix Kubin presents "Baptized With the Tears of the Surgeons"
Friday, August 15th, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
One half of the Hamburg based futuristic noise band
Klangkeig, Felix Kubin lives and works against the rest of the world. His activities include and combine Sci-Fi music, pop, noise, animated films, radio plays, experimental broadcasting and more. He started Gagarin Records in 1998 and has ruled the "syndicate of counter-noise" since 1999. Tonight he
presents a special-for-WFMU mix show complete with German oompah bands, our nation's leader, crazed 80s electro-punk snippets and more alien sounds to melt your brain.

The Daniel Johnston Hour
Thursday, August 14th, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
Thanks to Nick Hill, host of WFMU's Live Music Faucet (which went off the schedule in the mid 1990's), listeners will get a chance to hear a legendary hour of radio often asked about here. This particular program came from Nick's 2nd Anniversary Show in February of 1990, and featured Daniel
Johnston via telephone from his home in West Virginia and a whole elaborate cast of characters played by Daniel himself. He's joined for three songs played along in the studio by Yo La Tengo, then the trio of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and Dave Schramm.
Castro
Monday, August 11th, 2003, Midnight - 3am
on
Choking On Cufflinks with Michael Goodstein
Featuring ex-members of semi-legendary Dogg & Poney, as well as Baltimore improv group the Companion Trio, Castro is a Brooklyn-based post punk band soon to be scattered throughout the country, but emerging from their 718 habitat to play on WFMU. They've been compared to Y Pants, the
Raincoats, and Maximum Joy!!!

The DFA
Friday, August 8th, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
The DFA, a label and production house run by Tim Goldsworthy, James Murphy, and Jonathan Galkin, has injected a raw, post-punk bite into NYC's dance scene and adding a badly-needed new sheen to both the rock and electronic camps. Having scored huge underground hits with the Rapture's "House of Jealous Lovers" 12" as well as Murphy's solo-DJ guise the LCD Soundsystem (whose "Losing My Edge" 12" was a hilarious shopping list spoof of hipster-influence-one-upsmanship), the DFA crew has been beseiged with industry-heads waving big clients at them, including one Janet Jackson. In between sessions recording the new Black Dice record, the DFA took an hour out to produce an exclusive show for WFMU's Re:Mixology, promising an crazy mash of psych, kraut, soul, and "other weirdness", not to mention two exclusive DFA tracks unheard by the masses. Turn it up!
Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton (continued!)
Friday, August 8th, 2003, 3pm - 5pm
on
Nickel And Dime Radio with $mall ¢hange
It's a double bill tag team with $mall ¢hange and Monica each devoting a part of their shows to noted authors Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. While Mo-luv will be grilling these folks on their essential DJ tome 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' and arguing about what is the ultimate disco 12", $mall ¢hange will discuss DJ technique and acquiring the skills to pay the bills, as exemplified in Bill and Frank's new book, 'How To DJ Right'. So to sum it up: 2-3 pm: Monica discusses the history of the DJ, 3-4pm Nickel and Dime radio talks shop on doing your thang behind the decks.

Radio Nordsee under attack!
Thursday, August 7th, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
Carl Nordsee, a British DJ manning a pirate station off the coast of
England, is merrily minding his business in 1970 playing his Kinks and
Spencer Davis records when two boats approach his ship and try to take him
off the air. Despite his cool Brit demeanor, Nordsee can't hide the fact
he is freaking out, warning the intruders (who are pointing torches at the
bow) that they are likely to get electrocuted, and desperately pleading for help from the mainland. The whole time the hits
keep a-flowing.
Hip Hop Slam Crew
Friday, August 1st, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
The Bay Area's slammin'-est hip hop label/collective recorded their WFMU show for us at their annual barbecue! On the turntables and mixers today: Billy Jam, Platurn, Pne, DnZ, and CutSo all takes turns spinning exclusively for Re:Mixology in between wiping sauce off their fingers.
DJ Simon Dine
Friday, August 1st, 2003, 3pm - 5pm
on
Nickel And Dime Radio with $mall ¢hange
$mall ¢hange rolls out the red carpet for noted UK producer/DJ Simon Dine. He was the man behind the sampler in Adventures in Stereo and his current project Noonday Underground (with vocalist Daisy Martey) is the shiz-nit, a fine mix of 60's sesiblities balanced with modern production. Plus homeslice has ill records.
The Reverend Lester Knox of Tifton, Georgia
Thursday, July 31st, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
Insanely over-the-top gospel radio from the heart of south Georgia circa 1980-92. Rev. Knox purchased tons of time on WDIT-radio to spread the word, and it's up there with the greatest stuff by the likes of Rev. Louis Overstreet, Elder Beck, and Claude Ely. You'll hear: buzzing, short-circuited organ behind manic preaching, one-chord guitar bashing in what can only be described as the style of Hasil Adkins, and other sounds to literally scare the Hell out of you. This program is a sneak peak at a forthcoming collection on the new Smack Shire label, boiled down from 80 hours of tapes. Don't miss this.
Duran Duran Duran + Moblin
Wednesday, July 30th, 2003, 11pm - 2am
on
Advanced D & D with Donna Summer
Holy mother of Jesus! Hell hath spawned two new demons, one insane, vile, quite funny, and maybe a tad lovable, and the other friendly and fiendishly clever. Moblin is poised on the brink of superstardom for his complex and amazingly subtle glitchy vaguely hip hop compositions, and Duran Duran Duran has probably won the world over already not only for having the greatest band name in history, but for his searing breakcore mishmash of noise, silliness, and gay-porn lifestyle. They'll be rocking in the studio for the whole show so expect some live sets, some DJing, and plenty of chatter.
Jumpin' For Jesus
Wednesday, July 30th, 2003, 7pm - 8pm
on
The Audio Kitchen with The Professor
Much beloved all over the world, Jesus Christ is one of the most popular guys around. And although he hasn't walked the earth for a couple thousand years, he still seems to maintain a very personal relationship with a lot of folks. This episode of the Audio Kitchen looks at the lighter side of Jesus through some recordings of people fooling around in the name of, and with, the King of Kings.
Jenifer Jackson Wednesday, July 30th, 2003, Noon - 3pm
on
Irwin Chusid
Jenifer's third released album, "So High," has been a Gender Bias favorite since its release earlier this year. (Irwin admits to overplaying the song "The Power of Love," because it gives him goosebumps.) Among other projects, Jackson composed the score for the indie film "Daydream Believer," and cut an album of jazz duets with her dad. She's co-written songs with Austin's Troy Campbell and with Nashville's Swan Dive, and co-starred off-off-Broadway with Rosie Perez in the play "Brooklyn Bridge." Jackson has
collaborated with Medeski, Martin, & Wood, toured the US dueting with Jules Shear, and been a perennial showstopper at the Loser's Lounge musical tribute series.
The Tallboys
Saturday, July 26th, 2003, 5pm - 7pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
These 4 Brooklyn women bring slammin new rock 'n' roll
that's comparable to Kleenex, early Raincoats and early Au Pairs. They have a modern postpunk sound that ain't no '80s rehash. Catch this session on the Cherry Blossom Clinic and you can say you heard them before they were huge. Then go see them live this same night, July 26 at Rare on W. 14th with Hominid.
Go Home Productions Friday, July 25th, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
Go Home Productions is one fellow from the city of Watford, England with a big ol' record collection and thankfully nefarious desire to do some wicked things to popular icons. Witness: the Madonna/Sex Pistols bastardization "Ray of Gob." The mere fact that he recognizes the true genius/remix potential of the Osmonds' "Crazy Horses" earns him a spot on the Re:Mixology schedule, where much unheard and new material is promised to be premiered.
The Professor presents more Bob Lassiter
Thursday, July 24th, 2003, 6pm - 7pm
on
Aircheck
The Host of WFMU's Audio Kitchen, checks in with the second in his two-part overview
of the career of radio veteran Bob "Mad Dog" Lassiter on Aircheck. As a
talk host, Lassiter specialized in pissing off the elderly, Christians,
and a variety of intellectually-challenged listeners, and turning them
into irate, and ultimately entertaining, callers. Compared to the
lock-step right wing bozos that dominate talk radio these days,
Lassiter's mischievous and misanthropic style is practically high art.
In these two episodes of Aircheck, The Professor will feature plenty of
Lassiter: hostile phone calls, a couple monologues, and Bob himself
talking about his strange career in radio.
Going Out and Getting It On
Wednesday, July 23rd, 2003, 7pm - 8pm
on
The Audio Kitchen with The Professor
For better or worse, in our society courtship is a strategic gateway to pleasure, companionship, human reproduction, and perhaps all three. It's never easy, and often there's a lot of talkin' that goes on during the dating process. Now and then such discussions are actually caught on tape, and every once in a while these recordings will fall into the
hands of The Professor. Let's eavesdrop...
The Fugs
Wednesday, July 23rd, 2003, 3pm - 6pm
on
Kenny G's Hour of Pain
Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg founded the legendary Fugs in NYC's Lower
East Side 39 years ago, challenging the war pigs, rules of personal
freedom and even the definition of music itself, on and off ever since. Their
latest reunion comes with a new studio record "The Fugs Final CD (Part
One) and they drop some more bombs in the WFMU studios today with Kenny G.
Tune in.
Ansurbana Sunday, July 20th, 2003, 3am - 6am
on
Airborne Event
This multimedia improvising rock troup from Atlanta stopped by the WFMU studio to record a set while they were in town to play at Office Ops.
Ted Leo & the Pharmacists Saturday, July 19th, 2003, 5pm - 7pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
Ted Leo has been creating some of the best underground rock for over a decade in bands like Chisel. These days he plays melodic, poignant, evocative rock with "modern" lo-fi &
distortions. His music calls to mind Nick Lowe, Thin Lizzy, The Kinks, Stephin Merrit, Alex Chilton, and The Jam, and his live sets are so intense that he's like the punk-rock Bruce Springsteen! Hear for yourself when he plays live on the Cherry Blossom Clinic. He'll also be at the Siren Fest at Coney Island on Saturday July 19.

Pot Luck
Wednesday, July 16th, 2003, 7pm - 8pm
on
The Audio Kitchen with The Professor
It's the monthly Audio Kitchen free-for-all, where anything audio and amateur is possible. On the menu so far - The private diary of a very famous person, the adventures of a gambling grandma, a traveling salesman belting out college fight songs from behind the wheel, and the cacaphony of a chronically call-screened answering machine. And best of all, we'll hear another kitty love song!
Comets on Fire
Tuesday, July 15th, 2003, 3pm - 6pm
on
Brian Turner
Total guitar rock meltdown. Comets On Fire have members of bands like California's Six Organs of Admittance and the Low Down, and their first East Coast shows are gonna clean up this town of False Rock for good. Think Chrome's warped sci-fi attack, Blue Cheer with one guy solely playing
an echoplex pedal, Japan's High Rise with more Detroit in them. Their latest disc is called Field Recordings From the Sun, and Alternative Tentacles just reissued their totally brain-frying first record. Ethan, Utrillo, Noel, Ben and Ben hit town to play with the Major Stars in Brooklyn, but on the way, they stopped by Jersey City to completely destroy the studios. Do not miss this!
Little Killers
Saturday, July 12th, 2003, 5pm - 7pm
on
The Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T
This powerhouse power trio walks on stage and dominates the joint with their buzz-saw perfect punkrock! Crypt Records' honcho Tim Warren loved them so much he signed the band; his first new signing in years! They'll be at Sin-E on Friday July 25 so mark your calendars accordingly. And watch out for their debut release on Crypt!
Deanna Varagona
Saturday, July 12th, 2003, Noon - 3pm
on
The Radio Thrift Shop with Laura Cantrell
You might have seen Deanna Varagona playing sax with Nashville's eclectic orchestra, Lambchop, or contributing to the sweet country swing of Paul Burch & the WPA Ballclub, and the music of Chris Mills. She has been seen sitting in on Baritone Sax or sweet harmonies with the likes of Yo La Tengo, John Wesley Harding, Neutral Milk Hotel, and the Silos. Radio Thrift Shop hosts her this Saturday for some songs from her new solo album "The Goodbyes Have All Been Taken, Hello."
Wayne Butane
Friday, July 11th, 2003, 5pm - 6pm
on
Re:Mixology with DJ Jesuspants
Thankfully, people like Wayne Butane exist and have a lot of time to take millions of audio snippets and assemble them into brain-altering rivers of sound gush, that often will leave you chuckling in a most Beavis-and-Butthead-like manner before it all ends. Pure genius for the short-attention span potty-humor loving gnomes in the audience.
Morning 40 Federation
Thursday, July 10th, 2003, 9am - Noon
on
Inner Ear Detour with David
Stumbling into town from New Orleans, the Morning 40 Federation serves up an intoxicating brew of sloppy, fun-drenched, raunch 'n roll on the theme of drinking, being drunk, being hungover, and drinking some more. Musically, they fall somewhere between King Oliver, the Insect Trust, and the John Spencer Blues Explosion. Fun is at a premium at all times. Feel free to drink along at home.
Getting Into The Music Biz
Wednesday, July 9th, 2003, 7pm - 8pm
on
The Audio Kitchen with The Professor
It takes a lotta work to become famous, especially in the music
business. And aspiring to music stardom often creates a nice wake of discarded recordings along the way. In today's show The Professor sorts through the debris along the road to fame, playing a selection of demos, practice sessions, song sketches, and more.
All times listed are Jersey City time, EST.
