Happy New Year Jesse and all Glotals!!!
  3:50am
David in London:

Yeah, the horizon of dreams (in the aspirational sense) is a rather shrunken one at present. ‘A nice walk at the weekend’ is about as far as it goes at present. Not to decry a nice walk at all, but it ain’t moving the culture on. Sigh.

there was a line about dreaming being all we have on the Eli Escobar track, that's why I said that

(btw Jesse always wanted to ask, how would you describe the 'aesthetic' of your playlist cover images? I've noticed a big trend with these kind of retro-y images but not sure where they all originate from. Similar to the images on this instagram too: www.instagram.com... )
Avatar 4:27am
Jesse Dorris:

Hey Wizard, Happy New Year!

Hmm, that's a good question. Personally, I guess I sort of think of them as post-Brutalist? Mixing up the grid of Modernism, the appropriation of postmodernism, and the glitch of like Designers Republic?

Sylvia (France-NYC):

Hi fred!
  5:14am
kpx:

@Jesse Dorris: not being familiar with you or your show this might seem to be a dumb question, are you really a polyglot , besides English what are the other languages you speak and do you speak them fluently. and have you ever known or met a hyperpolyglot.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:14am
fred:

@Jesse: did you watch the dance show I talked about last week?
Avatar 5:18am
HyperDose:

@David Hope you're enjoying it with a nice view! I'm up in Jersey, a short train ride from WFMU HQ (hire me, Ken!).
Had a dream I don't remember, but woke up with a piano part in my head. Raced to the PC to "write" it down. Now I'm letting DJ JD take me away on a magic carpet of aural bliss.
Avatar 5:22am
Jesse Dorris:

@kpx I'm shamefully limited, with a bit of Spanish and French but not nearly enough, and used to have a bit of Japanese but that's probably flown from my head. I picked the name bc I wanted to think through what a polyglot of sound might be, different musical languages, if that's not too ridiculous.
Avatar 5:22am
Jesse Dorris:

Ahh Fred in all the holidays I did not see it, how was it?
Avatar 5:23am
Jesse Dorris:

Glad the show is helping you work through the red tape Sylvia!
Avatar 5:23am
Jesse Dorris:

Hope you captured it @Hyperdose!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:24am
fred:

@kpx: most people at my workplace speak three languages fluently (English, French and their native one), many speak four or five at least competently, some more than that. I guess the precarious research life is a factor (I'm one of the outliers, and not in a good way)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:25am
David (in London):

Well, that's exactly how I think of Polyglot Jesse, so you've pretty much succeeded there.

HyperDose, ah, you're Jersey strong (as The Pidge would say). Yeah, hope you managed to get the piano part down before the sound image faded.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:31am
fred:

@Jesse: I liked it, though it's nowhere the live experience. They seem to get better at filming it correctly, going lighter on close ups. You have a few more chances, though the times might not be great. Here's a link to the schedule (there's a 6 hour time difference, so today's at is 1pm for you, tomorrow at noon, Friday 8:30am and Saturday at 9am) www.theatredelaville-paris.com...

Caroline in Manchester:

this is my first time listening to this show and it's perfect coding music. thanks jesse!
  5:33am
kpx:

@Jesse Dorris: I couldn't even begin to approach the thought of criticism. So no, not ridiculous at all, sounds like you have more than enough lingual knowledge to achieve your goal.
Avatar 5:34am
Jesse Dorris:

Ooh thanks @Fred, hopefully I can watch!
Avatar 5:34am
Jesse Dorris:

Aww thanks @Caroline, glad to have you along for the ride!
Avatar 5:35am
Jesse Dorris:

Well @kpx I definitely wish I had more fluency
Avatar 5:40am
HyperDose:

Jesse & David I did! It's an exciting time. A childhood friend who finished music school shortly after I did finally got a new laptop. So we're getting back into it after a 2yr layoff. And we're more motivated than ever to write again after the crap show of 2020.
Avatar 5:44am
Jesse Dorris:

Nice, congrats!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:45am
fred:

@Jesse: It was first supposed to be a one off, but because the dancers were frustrated at not performing, they expanded the schedule several times, with different hours so that it could reach more time zones. So they perform live each time, though without an actual audience
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:46am
David (in London):

HyperDose, absolutely. Working on our last 'single' definitely improved the quality of the summer for me: a goal, focus, sense of achievement etc. At the moment it's almost overwhelmingly tempting to collapse into a lumpy slump, but get to those keys and get busy instead!
  5:52am
Kpx:

@Fred: I couldn't even imagine meeting one hyperpolyglot let alone working with several of them on a regular basis. You say you're an outlier, by comparison that puts me on a different planet..
Avatar 5:52am
HyperDose:

A few years ago my school closed and with it we lost the alumni network and their great connections. WFMU is a treasure trove of fellow like-minded artists and creative types. The accu-chat is an invaluable tool for network building!

thank you, Jesse, have a nice week
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:58am

@Kpx: Most conversation defaults to English (or French), luckily for me. Most confusing time was meeting with a one time girlfriend's cousin: I spoke English and French, she Arabic and French, and he Arabic and English. No common language, and switching is really hard for me.
But yeah, it can get weird when these people easily switch from one language to another in the same group. I'm completely lost, even get confused when my native French happens to be used
