With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

i passed thru nyc on the way west & it has changed lately. seems far less crowded & frenetic.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm adamdoesit:

It's true. All the dying has made it more livable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm adamdoesit:

(I apologize if that's in poor taste. I'm appreciative of how much less stressful the place has become to get around, but mindful of what brought that about.)
  1:30pm Linda Lee:

not dying so much as departure for other places. for a while back in spring people were *running* out. leaving whole apartments on the sidewalk. lots of them came up to the catskills.
  1:31pm Linda Lee:

i had people stalking my cabin looking to rent or buy. weirdish.

My wife and I were among them. After never having spent more than three weeks in our cabin at a stretch, we stayed nine months. Didn't see any real estate snoopers on our little road, but did notice that places that had been on the market for years were flying off the shelves at or above asking.

My ex and his wife finally got to go to their house in France (in the country in the southwestern part) in late September, they're still there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm doctorjazz:

That was happening in New Jersey towns as well, read that houses in my town (Westfield) were selling fast, sometimes for more than asking price (by Manhattan refugees). And this was with limited in person viewing, due to COVID-19 restrictions on contact.

Confusing matters, there is an unrelated Alamire Consort based at the University of New Hampshire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm adamdoesit:

Dean! Happy new year. I missed you on the last go round.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm doctorjazz:

And how, docjazz -- not just for arts coverage, either. I've developed the paranoid idea that the online Times feeds me totally different stories than the paper one does.
  1:56pm Dean:

Happy New Year, adamdoesit!

The Bruckner: Is it on the Intercord label? If so, I doubt it was recorded as late as 1992. The record was released on CD in '88 or '89, a reissue of a much earlier LP release.

I have the LP.

adamdoesit - I've been itching to play more lately - maybe it'll carry over. I'll be the WQXR of the Drummerstream (might have to ask your parents about that one).
  2:05pm Dean:

Wow, they actually rerecorded it twenty years later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm doctorjazz:

Adsmdoesit, I'm with you, it's not just Arts, I just mentioned that because it related to the specific article. But I feel I don't see international, tech, most other things as in the print version (I still get the print version, but often don't have the luxury of sitting down turning pages. Like to do that Sundays when I can, weekdays I often just catch articles between other activities). I wonder if they have some algorithm like Facebook, listing what they think you'll want to read (this year it almost always does me politics/Trump, and COVID-19 related articles).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm doctorjazz:

I'll second Adamdoesit @1:59!

Doctorjazz, the Times does have such an algorithm, developed under the (execrable) name Project Feels. It's done well for them -- online business is booming -- but it's the opposite of the sober reporting, delivered without regard for my apparent preferences, that I count on them to deliver.

(Also, no apologies necessary - I read typo fluently, and make more than my own share.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm adamdoesit:

Innit tho? Naturally, they blog about it: open.nytimes.com...

Plugging that in to the fleeing-the-city thread, COVID meant that I'd only see a paper Times once a week, after a 15-ish mile drive or bike ride… neither practicable or worth it as an everyday thing. When I did get and read the physical Saturday edition, I was shocked by how much better informed I seemed to be. It was like a whole different paper.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm chresti:

Hi coelacanthØ
Avatar 2:31pm Stork:

coel! welcome to Club '21!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm WR:

it has been a while since i last listened to Robin Kenyatta. Nice. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm coelacanth∅:

-and to you adam(di)!
Avatar 2:32pm Stork:

I love that keening tone, WR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm adamdoesit:

Keenyatta!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm coelacanth∅:

hey chrestì
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm coelacanth∅:

does that mean i have to be 21 to be here Stork?
  2:35pm Dean:

Been reading a bit lately about the use of machine learning and other data science tools in humanities research. It is (and has been for a very long time) a fascinating topic, but obviously the technology is nowhere near the promise some advocates anticipate. Looks like the NYT pretty clearly subscribes to the "good enough" model of design. But I love the ambiguity of "Project." Noun? Verb?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm watchpocket:

Happy New Year, Stork. Diggin' the sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm coelacanth∅:

"machine learning"...that could mean any of several things but either way it sounds like something i should learn about so i can develop a plan to put an end to it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Ike:

Hi there! Batiste is not great at bantering with Colbert every night, but he’s a heck of a good musician.
Avatar 2:43pm Stork:

Ike: Colbert is perhaps the worst banterer I've ever seen, though I like him a lot. Terrible interviewer in general, and awkward as hell with Batiste. He should stop the lame attempts at chat, and let Batiste and the band play - a LOT more. Actually can't wait for Jon to quit the show and go do even more amazing stuff. He is exceptional.
Avatar 2:45pm Stork:

Hey, Rusty! HNY atcha, babe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm adamdoesit:

Dean, I'd never thought of it as project (v). That fits my experience of the thing, and my resentment of it, like the proverbial nitrile glove.
Avatar 2:46pm Stork:

I'm not carding tonight, coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm coelacanth∅:

that's good Stork cuz i'd like to hang; but on the other hand i've already pounded 4 drinks so i'd be laughing as i got kicked out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm chresti:

La la laaaa....etc, Singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm adamdoesit:

It never entered my mind to sing along with "It Never Entered My Mind." I coulda projected feels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm doctorjazz:

That Haden-Anderson album is really nice (and the Naim recording is also very nice).
Michele Petrucciani also had Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Nasty illness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm spodiodi:

haha adam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm coelacanth∅:

so we finally learn your real name, Mr.Bondage. what's the O. stand for, Otto? Oliver? Opie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm adamdoesit:

Mal Waldron Appreciation Society, table of one over here, asks: wait, which one of these cats played with Mal (who admittedly played with just about everybody)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm WR:

Roach! BOOM! My ear are eagerly awaiting next Sunday!
Avatar 2:57pm Stork:

That was David Friesen, adamdoesit, who it turn also played with seemingly everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm doctorjazz:

Have a ton of Zorn stuff (but there must be 3 or 4 tons out there), don't have this, really nice!
Avatar 3:00pm Stork:

This the best thing on a kinda so-so project, IMHO, Doc. But really great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm coelacanth∅:

i've listened to the Braxton/Roach album (i forget the name) recently and ... i'm not sure what i think of it (so far) ...any reservations are in relation to other Braxton and other Roach of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm adamdoesit:

Thanks, Stork. Noted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm coelacanth∅:

("birth & rebirth")
Avatar 3:02pm Stork:

WE HAVE ACHIEVED OVERTIME! THE DOORS HAVE AUTOMATICALLY LOCKED. ATTEMPTS TO ESCAPE ARE FUTILE! YOU ARE MINE! MIIIINNNEEE!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 3:04pm Stork:

coel: Hell yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm doctorjazz:

That moog things are fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm adamdoesit:

Singing: You ain't been bloog, no no no…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Ike:

Wait, how do you get Colbert in Germany? Does some channel carry it there, or do you just “sail the high seas” of the net?
Avatar 3:08pm Stork:

It's on Youtube, Ike. I kinda can't watch him anymore. I root for him, but he has just not cut it in lockdown. He looks lost and it's painful.
Avatar 3:09pm Stork:

John Foxx on this track: John Lennon much?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm coelacanth∅:

i thought it sounds more like Julian Lennon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm coelacanth∅:

digging this Walkhausen and Stockman
- new to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Ike:

I still like him but yeah, he’s really leaning into the awkwardness and some of the jokes are too corny. He probably misses his audience. John Oliver is better, though doing only one ep a week probably helps a lot there.
Avatar 3:15pm Stork:

@coelacanth∅: that was some stuff S&Walkman had sitting around for decades that he relased last year. Great stuff throughout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm coelacanth∅:

i'll be exploring
- digging the liquid too (i've heard it before but am happy to be reacquainted at this juncture)
Avatar 3:23pm Stork:

Last firecracker going up from Can, dear Clubbers. Next week, we Roach to the Max! C'mon back!! Schweet!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm spodiodi:

thanks, Stork!
great stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Stork! Great show! Happy New Year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm adamdoesit:

Thanks for the tunes today, Storkorino. I loved every note. Looking forward to next week's Max Roach birthday broadcast. I guess we'll learn then whether you researched it all yourself, or paid a visit to the Roach coach. Happy new year, everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Stork! take care y'all
bis dann
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Ike:

Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm spodiodi:
