  8:06pm Vince:

Thank you for not playing Christmas music!
  8:07pm cabroncito:

thank you! im so tired of the Christmas crap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Actually Hazel Park sits on the northern edge of Detroit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Becky:

By the way, my punctuation in the title of this week's program is deliberate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Becky:

Sorryyyyyyy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Becky! Handy! Mr Fine Wine! Pauly!

What a great tribute show. I think we've all got memories of a record seller or flea market vendor like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Ha it's an obscure weird hickish suburb and it's kind of amazing that it butts up against Detroit
  8:09pm P-90:

Merry Christmas, Ms. Becky and Beckaroos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Richard S:

Love the percussion in this one!
  8:10pm P-90:

Someday maybe I’ll find a nice obscure weird hickish suburb to settle down in...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Quintessential Mays record, Gene Nitz. :(
  8:11pm Andres:

Evening Becky and all! First glance at song title and I misread Chewbacca. Perhaps the origins of the character's name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Becky:

Chewtobacca, Chewie's country cousin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Ha! Here's a map of Detroit country music sites. carcitycountry.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Lizzie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Country Caravan is a division of Mutt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Pauly from Clifton:

Evening, SCL!!
  8:15pm BH:

Looking at the Detroit area on JusticeMap.org and yep, the location of 8 Mile Rd is pretty obvious there. (Full disclosure: i'm from a different midwestern metro that also has obvious residential segregation)
Avatar 8:16pm Little Danny:

Hey Becky, all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Becky:

Hi Danny!
Avatar 8:18pm Little Danny:

Awesome map, MFW. So many great Michigan country records. I swear they have their own fidelity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Did other northern urban centers have as big a country scene? I assume Chicago must have, but I don't really know the answer.
  8:22pm P-90:

The Madalorian Season 3 rumored to introduce a new character: Chewbecka, the Honky Tonk Radio Wookiee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi there. I'm ready for a honky-tonk Christmas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Becky:

P-90, I just squealed at how absolutely wonderful that idea is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Handy Haversack:

@Mr. FW, I met a guy in Muskegon a few years ago who was telling me that Grand Rapids has a pretty vibrant rockabilly scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Mr. Fine Wine:

I wish I knew more about the Del Shannon demo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm listener 126464:

More Songs About Hamtramck
Avatar 8:26pm Little Danny:

Becky would know best but Chicago's didn't compare, at least in my experience. Detroit's greater auto industry seemed to draw all the Appalachian (and Ohio) cats, a cottage country "scene" develops, more country musicians are drawn to the city in turn, ad infinitum. It didn't hurt that Detroit (rather than, say, a Cleveland or a Pittsburgh) had a vibrant local recording infrastructure (studios, spaces, DJs, good economy, promoters, like-minded musicians, etc.) that existed already by World War II.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Handy Haversack:

(Please have a song about the Boblo ferry! Please have a song about the Boblo ferry!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Excellent points, Danny. Handy, isn't "I met a guy in Muskegon" itself the first line of a country song??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Becky:

One of my all-time favorite records - this live Chicago recording of the Sundowners, a local honky tonk act: www.bloodshotrecords.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Becky:

And Toronto and Montreal had strong country scenes, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Handy Haversack:

It's a whole subgenre, Mr. FW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm G:

Tons of folks from Kentucky were in southeast Michigan in the car industry. I lived down the street from some as a kid, circa 1970. Locals even jokingly called Ypsilanti "Ypsitucky."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Becky and I were on the recommissioned Boblo boat for Gino Washington's birthday party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, US 41 and then I-75 were direct corridors from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Decommissioned? Repurposed? Whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Becky:

I remember we had to go around and around in a tight circle to avoid going under the bridge on one side and crossing into Canada on the other.
  8:30pm HopeWithFeathers:

Channeling my own Honky Tonk self to bake some Peanut Blossom cookies. Enjoying the tunes — keep ‘em spinning Becky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm ultradamno:

Converted, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm G:

@Handy: Yep, a family down the street from me was in a bad car accident on I-75 around 1970, coming home from visiting relatives back in Kentucky.
  8:31pm Christo:

Hey Becky! That was cool! This is country music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Handy Haversack:

Sorry, US 23. (It and 41 sort of trade places by Atlanta.)
Avatar 8:32pm Little Danny:

Funny, all that Detroit lacked in terms of being a real national country industry powerhouse were the labels. Which were all in still Nashville (and all the major Southern and Texan cities) and Los Angeles in the '50s and '60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mr. Fine Wine: Did Gino actually show up?
  8:33pm Christo:

Love your show Becky! Merry Christmas 🎄
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Becky:

Thanks Christo!
Avatar 8:34pm Little Danny:

I'm blanking on the name of Motown's country subsidiary.
  8:34pm Andres:

I was thinking Windsor, Ontario must have had a strong country music scene, with its proximity to the Detroit scene and the rural counties surrounding it. I guess Shania Twain's birth there is the proof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Handy Haversack:

Moedown? Hoetown? These can't be right, Little Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm ultradamno:

Mel-o-dy
  8:36pm BH:

Although Windsor, Ontario is South Detroit, so.. it makes sense for country to be big there.
Avatar 8:36pm Little Danny:

Mel-o-dy! Thanks UD.

Some good hardcore honky-tonk 45s on that label, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm ultradamno:

I think because it was run by Mel O. Dyson.

I just made that up. Talking out of my ass again, I can't stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Handy Haversack:

Still better than my made-up guesses, ultradamno.
Avatar 8:38pm Little Danny:

I heard about the 78 burial, too! Heard that on different occasions from Bob Mays enthusiast Pete Wilgus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Those lost 78s! I'm tearing up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Becky:

Gaylord: Gino showed, but refused to sing all night (despite it being HIS birthday and a whole band being assembled and ready to accompany him), until after midnight when the boat pulled back into the dock. Then he sang 2 songs and RAN off the boat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Handy Haversack:

Let's get shovels and meet in Detroit!

(OK for a song opener, Mr. FW?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Gino was a big tease that night but it was still fun. A "white party"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Gaylord Fields:

@Becky @MFW: That is so bizarre, but that level of cowardice is certainly on brand for Gino.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Ha. Okay, here's what I know of the 78 burial: Bob had a green thumb and had some pots he wanted to plant seedlings in but needed potting soil. He decided he'd use the rich, black Hazel Park dirt in his backyard. But that would leave unsightly holes! He also had a few hundred copies of undesirable local 78, Briant Holland's "(Where't the Joy) In Nature Boy"/"Shock" on the Kudo label, taking up a lot of space. So he decided to fill the holes with 78s and top them off. Years went by, maybe decades. Grass grew over the 78s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Gaylord Fields:

It just occurred to me that between Emanuel Lasky and Nathaniel Mayer, Detroit certainly had its share of Black singers with Jewish-sounding names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm ultradamno:

This is like a customer feedback card set to music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Then inquiries started coming in. Wants lists. People were after the 78. He tried to dig them up and kept not finding them. Eventually he found (some of? most of? all of?) them, but the labels were all corroded completely off. A helpful customer made exact replica labels that he glued on to the unburied 78s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm ultradamno:

...OK, a warmer than usual one, but still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Gaylord: Yes! Also, Detroit store-front soul food restaurants all feature corned beef!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Becky:

My debut funk instrumental 45 is going to be Asian Corned Beef b/w Boogaloo Sandwich after iconic Detroit delicacies. (Asian Corned Beef is Black-owned and serves corned beef-stuffed egg rolls, of course).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Sorry I made you run in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm ultradamno:

Well, I never knew how much I wanted corned beef eggrolls before today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Gaylord Fields:

That story just goes to show you that one more limitation of digital media is you can't do absolutely boneheaded things with an mp3 file that make for great anecdotes. RIP, Bob Mays, and heartfelt sympathies, Becky and MFW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Handy Haversack:

Math checks out, Becky.

And thanks for a great show! So good to be in Michigan through the music for a night. This was the first year since I was in high school that I didn't get out there to visit my aunt and my uncle. I miss it and them super hard. This was great. Many, many thanks.

Sending wishes for happy happy days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Mr. Fine Wine:

So true. Thanks, Gaylord.
Avatar 8:53pm Little Danny:

Just checked out that Briant Holland thing. Great! Not what I was expecting.
  8:53pm Dean from Old Bridge:

Great show as always, Becky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Danny: exists on 45 too. Yeah, love it!
  8:54pm Andres:

Funny story about my dog eating a USB stick...
Avatar 8:54pm Little Danny:

My Mays 45 sleeves have cryptic little 0's on them, I forget what that meant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Mr. Fine Wine:

I FORGET TOO! O's with X's through them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Becky:

I WAS WONDERING THAT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Becky:

I pulled out a representative sample and could not find a through line at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Gaylord Fields:

@Little Danny @MFW @Becky: Maybe it's shaped note transcription for singing along with the records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm radioronan:

Thanks Becky & Mr. Mays! Thanks Scott & skeletons..
  8:57pm Andres:

Through line was they are all gold! Excellent show tonight, Becky!!!
Avatar 8:58pm Little Danny:

It believe it was the "good" side according to Bob
Avatar 8:58pm Little Danny:

Thanks Becky, wonderful show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Mr. Fine Wine:

Danny: He was a vocal stickler about keeping the records facing the right way in his long homemade boxes!
  8:59pm P-90:

EVERYTHING’s better with steel guitar on it...
Avatar 8:59pm Little Danny:

Yes he was, MFW. I pissed him off a lot thusly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm listener 126464:

Thank you Becky, and also message board for the stories.
  9:00pm Listener Bop Monroe:

greetings from stove-top Tannersville. thnx Ms. B!

Thanks Becky, and Happy Honky Tonk Holidays to all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Tommy in Neversink:
