Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Handy Haversack:

efd! All the other letters! Let us rock and, you know, maybe roll!

Very, VERY glad to be here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm ultradamno:

Evan! Funkies!
  9:04pm Listener07928:

Hello fellow listeners ready to be funked tonight
Avatar 9:04pm javakid:

bring the little weird EFD
  9:05pm listener07928:

@efd ready for that interview
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Now that Andy Breckman has me thinking about words, I guess "efd" is not in alphabetical order, but the letters are cozily next to each other on the keyboard.
Avatar 9:08pm javakid:

there may be more cowbell than usual tonight :::not a complaint:::
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm ultradamno:

Dr. Love can make all the promises he likes but we're not getting that cure before the UK and Europe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm listener 126464:

How many people on the right side like to drink TA-QUEEEE-LA?! (cowbell)
  9:10pm Listener07928:

@Javakid there is no such thing as too much cowbell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm prof.fuzz:

MD or PhD???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Barkevious Shabazz:

The pop gun was the likely high point of Love Gun. Or Christene Sixteen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Figgsrock:

Just started Doug's book this week and it's pretty fantastic. Lots of amazing details in there.
  9:13pm pgalub:

Hey efd and everyone! 🎸
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm ultradamno:

Got my Kiss records out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm luka:

last time i saw Anthrax they played this Cheap Trick tune.
Avatar 9:14pm Terre T:

@efd-- Smokin start w/ da Starz.
And I've always loved "Dr. Love" :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm efd:

hey everyone! Thanks for tuning in tonight... as usual the shows where I have all the songs planned out somehow feel the most stressful! Will check back in when I can, the interview will start around the bottom of the hour - stay tuned!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm listener 126464:

anyone want to split an 8-pak?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm ultradamno:

I saw Anthrax once, they did some stuff with a native headdress that wouldn't play nowadays.
  9:16pm Christo:

This is one of those great rock songs iconic!
  9:16pm Will:

It's the soundtrack to to the movie that wasn't "Dazed and Confused" -- darker, less southern.
  9:16pm Ben London:

I’m searching for my feather roach clip and 6 pack of Michelob I stashed somewhere!
  9:17pm Listener07928:

@Terre T one of my favorite kiss songs is beth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm ultradamno:

In fact, Starz is only band played so far I have seen live, regrettably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm luka:

@ultradamno no doubt. it was from a good place, but it was still misguided. great band, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm listener 126464:

Sounding great from Studio E
Avatar 9:18pm javakid:

@ultradamno I'm 0 for 4 unless you include Frehley's Comet
  9:18pm Christo:

✌️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm ultradamno:

Seems like there was a thing with that stuff in the nineties through the 00s festival stuff, Juliette & The Licks went through a headdress phase.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm ultradamno:

Starz is the only one i HAVEN'T seen, I meant.
  9:21pm sufferwords:

Give a thousand Monkey’s a typewriter and they’ll write Strutter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm luka:

@ultradamno for Anthrax, it was even earlier. ‘87. but “Indians” is a positive song overall. it was just dressed up unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm West Trenton Vinnie:

just tuning in, strutter...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm luka:

good lord “strutter” still goes hard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm ultradamno:

I think it was early 90s when I saw them, Monsters of Rock or some thing with Slayer, Megadeth and Alice In Chains
  9:22pm phat:

The only time I ever made it into Billboard was when a band of mine won a KISS cover contest to celebrate the release of that tribute album that came out. We did Strutter.

I played in 3 bands that. All kind of the same bassline.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm efd:

was tempted to play "Strutter '78" from Double Platinum, but had to stick with the OG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm efd:

@phat, that is awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Tome:

loved *Toys* but listened more to *Rocks* I liked even better !<>!
Avatar 9:23pm TonyR:

My yoof!!! (Where did you go?)
  9:24pm Ben London:

You can’t fuck with the Aerosmith harmonies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Figgsrock:

I saw Anthrax in 93 at The Grand (one of the first shows with John Bush) and our table was right next to Gene Simmons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Tome:

gimme back my records lol ,, great stuff !<>!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm efd:

@Ben very true!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm ultradamno:

1991 Clash of the Titans, Deer Creek, specifically en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Tome:

,,, would have skipped * Destroyer * too !<>!
Avatar 9:26pm TonyR:

"Big Eyes" didn't sound as "Big" as I remember it. I see now why the labels brickwall old recordings when they remaster. (Still a crime against art, but I think an argument can be made).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm ultradamno:

Cheap Trick stub twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm luka:

that was the tour where Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax would always rotate order, but AIC opened every gig.
  9:26pm Ben London:

Someone bought a chorus pedal.
  9:26pm slugluv1313:

ok EFD you have *officially*
transported me back to (suburban NJ) high school
  9:27pm WashingtonvilleGuy:

Practicing my golf putt in the garage and enjoying this very rocking set... Thanks again Evan Funk.
Avatar 9:27pm TonyR:

Starz? Who dat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm ultradamno:

Slayer played last when I saw them and I can't imagine how any of them could have followed them. Brutal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm efd:

@slugluv ...sorry?
  9:28pm slugluv1313:

HELLO TERRE T. !!!
yes i love me some STARZ too
Avatar 9:28pm TonyR:

Summer of 1978: Foghat, Cheap Trick and the Sweet. 1 Phillly show, 3 monsters.
  9:29pm Ben London:

This Starz song sound like every band from Cleveland when I was growing up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm efd:

@slugluv (to be clear, my last comment should read as an uncertain apology, not that I didn't understand your comment!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Tome:

Ram Jam *Portrait of The Artist As a Young Ram* ,,, that one always stuck with me too back in like *78* !<>!
  9:29pm listener07928:

@slugluv1313 back when there was two or 3 good rock stations in NYC, and WDHA here in jersey!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm efd:

@Ben that sounds like a compliment to me!
  9:30pm phat:

How in the hell have I never heard Starz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm ultradamno:

I always thought the Magna cigarettes logo bore more than a passing similarity to the Starz logo twitter.com...
Avatar 9:30pm TonyR:

Now you have. Happy? ;)
  9:31pm Ben London:

Yes. Are you into Artful Dodger? Could have been the same band.
  9:31pm slugluv1313:

@EFD -- no, it is an EXCELLENT thing -- stuff like this kept me alive & kicking back then :)
(sorry, not signed in, kinda wonky commenting on this phone, got cut off before i could say THANK YOU!!!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Tome:

Cleveland *DeadBoys* someone just played them other night ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm efd:

@slugluv no worries! I realized after I posted that it might not be obvious I was making a leetle joke.
@Ben yes, and agree!
Avatar 9:32pm TonyR:

I guess the author will make his case for Starz when he interviews.
  9:33pm Ben London:

Now that I’m older I wonder how much payola Kid Leo got to slap in these songs on WMMS.
  9:33pm johnk77:

https://concerts.fandom.com/wiki/Cheap_Trick_Concerts_1970s
great list

at times:>
  9:33pm Ben London:

*Play these songs.
  9:33pm slugluv1313:

@listener07928 -- yes exactly! & most did not have regimented programming :)
  9:35pm listener07928:

@slugluv 1313 WPLJ played some great music before they went all top40
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, I'm staying tuned!

Hey, slugluv!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm ultradamno:

Graham Parker definitely opened for them when I saw them that year and were SLAUGHTERED by the audience, which still perplexes me...I think Roadmaster played too.
  9:37pm Listener07928:

@Handy this is going to be good tonight
Avatar 9:37pm javakid:

@07928 speaking of PLJ and this show www.nydailynews.com...
  9:38pm slugluv1313:

*somewhere* i still have a letter from a KISS fan club (not sure if it was The KISS Army) -- they were based in Jersey City! & sent me a photo (maybe from 1973?) of the first time Gene Simmons blew fire on stage
  9:39pm Listener07928:

@javakid interesting about carol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm luka:

idk a thing about starz, so this is fascinating.
  9:41pm slugluv1313:

GRAHAM PARKER AND THE RUMOUR WERE/ARE FREAKING AWESOME!!! saw them a buncha times back then, the "ex" was a huge fan
  9:41pm phat:

@luka same!
  9:41pm phat:

I'm already enjoying this interview immensely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm ultradamno:

In spite of the resistance, they put on a great show, for sure.
  9:43pm slugluv1313:

i never got the STARZ album but i still have a buncha their 45s -- some on colored vinyl, iirc -- fantastic fun band!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Chop Scott:

Thanks for this EFD!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm ultradamno:

I don't know how Starz didn't break out either. I mean they titled an album Attention Shoppers!, what more could they have done?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm efd:

@Chop Scott it's my absolute pleasure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Handy Haversack:

It worked for K-Mart after all, ultradamno ... right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm ultradamno:

Exactly...maybe if they had attached blue lights to the albums. A missed opportunity
  9:46pm slugluv1313:

heya Handy!
gotta get back to work here -- but will be listening -- fascinating interview!
  9:48pm phat:

"Rock Six Times" from the "Violation" album almost sounds like satire. I love it.
  9:52pm slugluv1313:

@listener07928 -- yes! i started with WPIX-FM (more "hot 100" than "top 40") maybe 1970? 1971? then meandered up the radio dial (hah remember those!) to WNEW-FM -- totally "free form" back then :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm luka:

“surrender” is in a galaxy all it’s own lyrically. nothing like it, not even close. i’m not sure if it’s good or bad! it just is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm mariano:

Hey efd, Crew, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm TomDash:

This interview is GREAT! I recall a year or 2 ago when Doug was living in my neighborhood, ran into him at a local bar right after he left his most recent job to work on the book...got my copy last week can't wait to read it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm luka:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm West Trenton Vinnie:

gotcha jumo, but will dig into the archive. Thanks efd and Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm TomDash:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm West Trenton Vinnie:

Scalper hocking tickets to the Cheap Trick show in the bleachers at a local high school...
Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Somm Ben:

This track always reminds of some of Kurt Cobain's melodies for some reason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm luka:

now i’m thinking about that Albini mix of In Color.
  9:56pm slugluv1313:

omg now i am having flashbacks of seeing Cheap Trick at The Palladium with the "ex" -- The Cars opened! damn i have GOT to check out this book - THANK YOU EFD!!!

Lemonheads do a pretty good version of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Handy Haversack:

Yo, Mariano!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm ultradamno:

This song is too subtle, I'm not sure what he's getting at...

  10:02pm phat:

Holy crap. The author is here. I love WFMU.
  10:02pm slugluv1313:

hiya mariano!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm efd:

I know this isn't the song Starz was singing about, but with all due respect I think we've heard "Walk This Way" enough by this point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm luka:

this aerosmith song is a hair-raiser. but the best of this era for me is “sick as a dog”.
  10:04pm phat:

@efd good call. And Mama Kin still kicks my ass.
  10:04pm phat:

@luka love "Sick as a Dog" so much.
Avatar 10:05pm spodiodi:

hey Handy!
  10:06pm Doug Brod:

Sometimes Aerosmith could be so damn funky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm luka:

@phat i really don’t think they recorded a better song than that.
  10:07pm phat:

@luka agreed. One of my old bands worked on a cover but never finished it. Wish we had. That would have gone well next to the Sun Ra we did. Lol.
  10:08pm slugluv1313:

yup! perfect soundtrack for 1970s suburban NJ underage drinking :)
Avatar 10:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bawstin band? I beg your pardon - Sunapee, New Hampshuh! My older brother tells of seeing Aerosmith at the junior high we both went to where they probly made $200
...& thinking - this is just typical Rawk'n' Roll ...& then thinking - yeah - but they're *goood* @ it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm McGroovey:

I remember when the Starcastle/Starz tour passed through Syracuse and/or Rochester. Not sure what year that was. I liked them both, and in my teenage memory they're the same band, though I have records by both and I know they're not.

I grew up midway between Rochester and Syracuse, and we listened to the rock stations from Rochester (WCMF and WSAY-AM) and Utica (WOUR). eventually there was a Syracuse rock station, WAQX. WCMF and WOUR playlists included rock (what we'd now call classic rock) and new wave and a little punk. WSAY tended more toward metal, in the seventies sense (Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep). Kiss would have been on the AM pop stations, not the rock stations.
  10:12pm CC:

Getting the right booking agent makes all the difference!!!...:)
  10:16pm Doug Brod:

I misspoke. It's Plastic Penny!

  10:18pm Doug Brod:

I love that you're playing this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm ultradamno:

Well, if that kind of thing was good enough for The Cramps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Handy Haversack:

Mariano, while listening tonight, I'm editing an article by my friend Santiago, an Italian/Austrian/Swiss/Catalan of Argentinean parentage, on Maradona and the necessity of socialism. It's fun!

Also: REPENT!
  10:19pm slugluv1313:

@RRN63 -- ah yes & of course Tyler spent many years growing up in YONKERS! iirc his Dad still gave piano lessons there for many years :)
  10:19pm phat:

Hot damn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm efd:

in a funny coincidence, last week I started my show with a song by Matthew Fisher, who played keyboards with Procol Harum
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm efd:

I'm not going to play "10538 Overture" though, much as I love that song. We don't have all night!
Avatar 10:21pm Kelly Jones:

Great Interview EFD, enjoying the show AS ALWAYS. Fuckin' Procol Harum... who knew... amazing song dude.
  10:22pm phat:

I love Procul Harem. I need more of them in my life. Also, this could be "post rock."

Avatar 10:24pm Tank Top:

Wow this is Cheap Trick?
Avatar 10:25pm Roberto:

Cheap Trick might have ripped this from Procol Harum, but Procol Harum ripped it from J.S. Bach.
  10:25pm CC:

Why do you think John Lennon asked them to sing harmonies on Double Fantasy!?!...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm McGroovey:

Yeah, Cheap Trick took (borrowed, OK) a lot from The Move and The Nazz.

The bass sound on Heaven Tonight is very Move-y.

Bach, that hack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm efd:

@McGroovey not to mention they also straight-up covered The Move!
  10:27pm Stevel:

Roberto: That’s kinda the heart of things. Layering on, borrowing, still have to bring it together
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm ultradamno:

Great artists steal, as the saying goes.
Avatar 10:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Reminds me of Alice...
  10:28pm Doug Brod:

Another fun A/B comparison: CT's Baby Loves to Rock and the Yardbirds' Psycho Daisies
  10:28pm Doug Brod:

I want to start a band just so I can cover this song.
  10:29pm Ben London:

Is this Piper? :)
Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Somm Ben:

Doug - Your book's thesis is well proven by how these bands are tying into so many other groups
Avatar 10:29pm javakid:

EFD a lot of the same care and curation as the Vic Maile show a little while back. Thank you for the time you are taking to entertain us.
  10:29pm phat:

@Doug Brod I'm in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Handy Haversack:

Roberto, doesn't the piano player in The Commitments accuse Procul Harum of the same thing? Also: "Poxiest lyrics ever written!"!
  10:29pm pgalub:

Got my BACH records out! (for later) Ooh yeah love this Paul Stanley tune! Great stuff efd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm efd:

Am I crazy thinking that this song sounds a lot like Toto's "I'll Supply The Love"?
Avatar 10:29pm Kelly Jones:

Everyone knows I have a *thing* for KISS. Kinda like Ken Freedman's *thing* for Hall & Oates. It's unspoken...but it's there... and no amount of musical slut shaming can change it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm McGroovey:

Well, yeah, and a couple of the Cheap Trick guys were in one of the last live incarnations of the Nazz. Or ... Yeah, Rick Nielsen was, and then Thom Mooney followed Rick into one of those pre-Cheap Trick bands.

There's a Nazz bootleg that has a live version of Open My Eyes with Rick Nielsen, and a studio recording of a Rick Nielsen song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm ultradamno:

Obvious ones: The Fall's Elves and The Stooges' I Wanna Be Your Dog, The Cramps' reference above was mostly to What's Behind The Mask and Dale Hawkins' Tornado
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm West Trenton Vinnie:

this show's over the top, the depth of my psyche that's being probed is unsanctioned and inappropriate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm efd:

@Ben there are Piper connections with these bands, though!
  10:30pm Doug Brod:

The drummer on this song drummed for Piper: Richie Fontana
  10:30pm Ben London:

Really could be a raspberries song if Eric CArmen was singing.
  10:31pm slugluv1313:

PIPER!!! :)
Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Somm Ben:

@efd - agreed on Piper connect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm efd:

there it is, thank you Doug!
  10:31pm Doug Brod:

Yer welcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm efd:

this is one of my all-time favorite KISS songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm ultradamno:

Detective seems like another that fits in there, don't they? Piper made me think of them, anyway.
  10:32pm Ben London:

It’s like steely Dan meets kiss
  10:32pm ?:

can anyone remind me what fuze cover song they were talking about?
  10:32pm johnk77:

procol harum very popular
in the american midwest
starting in the late 60s
  10:32pm Doug Brod:

This is when they wanted to be Exile.
Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Somm Ben:

We are listening to this set in a 50s wood-paneled kitchen in Jersey City - slight fire hazard because this set is straight fire
  10:33pm CC:

World party, Oasis and Elo do a pretty good job as well... got to go eat something now...cheerz!!!...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Figgsrock:

@efd, this track reminds me a of mix CD Wurster gave me and the Figgs guys when we crashed at his place while on tour. He called it, You Wanted the Best But You Got KISS. This was the best song on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm ultradamno:

Maybe not, Detective dressed better than any of these bands
  10:34pm phat:

Disco KISS is awesome. I don't care what anybody else says. This is actually great.
  10:34pm John in Long Branch:

i stumbled into my man cave tonight already thinking guilty thoughts about how I didnt need this next beer when i opened the door to 'Heaven tonight" by Cheap trick and I sank into my comfy chair and laughed aloud with joy! thanks!!
Avatar 10:34pm Roberto:

Yeah, Whiter Shade of Pale was an even more obvious rip from Bach. I'm okay with it.
Avatar 10:35pm Roberto:

Speaking of which, was anyone else on the 7SD Zoom call this evening? There was an attempted Whiter Shade sing-along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Handy Haversack:

We opted out, Roberto.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm ultradamno:

Just Shoes, no The, I hear they're touchy about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm efd:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm mariano:

Handy (10:19): Wow, sounds really interesting. And repent? Pazuzu don't sin.
Avatar 10:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Kiss was a Show - so why not. Outside writing got Aerosmith hits but diminished them don't you think ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Handy Haversack:

It made more sense during the Procul Harum song, Mariano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Aitch:

That Scat Bros is nasty

Skatt Bros - except for everyone on this board

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Handy Haversack:

What a cliffhanger!
  10:43pm Phillippe Bastille:

Scott to the rescue
  10:43pm pgalub:

The chorus of Cheap Trick's tune "I Can't Take It" is a little reminiscent of "Sure Know Something". (And Bach of course)
Avatar 10:43pm Kelly Jones:

Oh Thank God...I thought that drop out was my new AV system which I have yet to master....

Skatt Bros and used-bin seem to go together. Huuuge in the clubs in Sydney at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Stevel:

You're quick!
  10:46pm phat:

This show has made my week.
  10:46pm Doug Brod:

This might be the first time this song has ever been played on the radio...ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm efd:

I didn't want to miss out on a second of the Skatt Bros discussion!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm mariano:

Oh, sorry, Handy. Divided attention tonight. SUBDIVISIONS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm efd:

I played "Life At The Outpost" a couple years ago after I found this record
  10:48pm Doug Brod:

The guitarist, David Andez, also played/sang background with the Village People.
  10:49pm phat:

This is a strange record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm efd:

@Aitch you've gotta keep an eye out for that rare second Skatt Bros. album down there!
  10:50pm Doug Brod:

I found an amazing cover of Life at the Outpost by some Aussie TV presenter named Ray Burgess. The video's on youtube and it's insane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Handy Haversack:

While I'm busy being deliciously clever, Mariano, Kate's swotting away making you a gift. SUBDIVISIONS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Wow I didn’t know of Starz and they’re great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Aitch:

I'll brief my trader friends Evan. Ray Burgess was a (creepy) presenter on an after-school TV show in Oz, first time I saw KISS, mid 70s
  10:52pm Ben London:

This one has Queen written all over it!
  10:52pm phat:

The Skatt Bros wiki is entertaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm efd:

@Sweet Corn Lizzie Mission accomplished!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Roberto I sang it!
  10:53pm phat:

I wondered if you'd play Brandy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Handy Haversack:

Argh. Damn, sometimes one just *misses* karaoke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Kat in Chicago:

I am *definitely* wondering where this one fits in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm efd:

NO SPOILERS PHAT! 😀
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm drowsy:

I am ready for the brandy explainer..
Avatar 10:54pm Kelly Jones:

Evan... if I kick it, play this at my funeral. Glen Jones gave me this 45 record and it's a long standing favorite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm mariano:

Aww, really? Thanks Kate!
  10:54pm Ben London:

I’m surprised Urge Overkill didn’t cover this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm efd:

all shall be revealed in the fourth and final segment of our interview!
Avatar 10:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@slugluv way back : Yeah I read Tyler's autobio - enjoyed - writes of spending summers up here in NH & winters in NYC. 'Seasons of Wither' very much a being in North New England too long song...
Avatar 10:55pm Kelly Jones:

OMG @ Ben London... that would be pretty f-ing great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Figgsrock:

I love how this song ties in. Had no idea until I read the book.
Avatar 10:56pm Roberto:

Oh hey Sweet Corn. I was busy wrangling a chingadero.
  10:56pm phat:

Now I can't wait to read this book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm efd:

I have been mad at myself since recording this interview for saying "up front masculine" instead of "up front heterosexual" or something. Bad phrasing on my part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Handy Haversack:

Heard, efd.
Avatar 10:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...too late for Brian Epstein...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Stevel:

Brandy-band!
Avatar 10:58pm Roberto:

As if anyone never needed a reason to play Brandy.
Avatar 10:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Punky's Whips...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm ultradamno:

There's a lot performative masculinity, but then a lot of what Kiss was grows out of glam too.
  10:58pm phat:

I only just learned about this connection reading wiki. I love the unknown stories of rock n roll. I didn't know Starz at all!
  10:59pm phat:

KISS and Aerosmith were pretty camp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Kat in Chicago:

I barely knew Starz. I am very happy to have finally heard "Rock Six Times."
  11:02pm Doug Brod:

Why am I screaming?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm efd:

you're passionate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Handy Haversack:

The Darkness has a guitar lightning bolt defeating a space crab. I'd say it's fairly theatrical!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm efd:

(also I didn't think you were screaming)
Avatar 11:03pm Kelly Jones:

Evan... masculine is masculine, regardless of who you're attracted to. Hot Case In Point: Rob Halford. That is some hot shit, either way! It's all good bro!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm mariano:

Isn't that the best way to defeat a space crab though?
Avatar 11:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Good Journalism & Interviewing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Handy Haversack:

It is ... ze oldest remedy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Careful there Roberto!

We always sing “Brandy’s just too dumb to understand” and some people are surprised those aren’t the real words.

Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm ultradamno:

I would get that even with Sun Ra, there are people who like to dismiss as a guy who rode a gimmick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Figgsrock:

This was a great conversation EFD and Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm ultradamno:

The Residents and Devo too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Handy Haversack:

Great interview, efd! Much new to think about. Though ... I just don't think I'll ever like Aerosmith.

Many thanks, Doug! Very cool and generous of you!
  11:06pm Doug Brod:

Thanks, Steve! Miss seeing you on the train!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Figgsrock:

Yeah Doug, the Jay St platform isn't the same!
  11:07pm Doug Brod:

Thanks, Handy and everyone else. This was fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm ultradamno:

Handy, give up, join us. Aerosmith were great. And they would fight on stage, which is my favorite thing...
Avatar 11:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My older brother (again) tells of walking around with a Kiss record & getting harassed for liking 'fags' in makeup & all this - & a bit later those same rednecks are of course in the Kiss army with the beltbuckles & so forth...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Chop Scott:

Bravo EFD!! Great deep connection threads Doug-- thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Stevel:

Steven Tyler is a lot of things (very short, for one) but FFFUUUUCCKKK!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm efd:

Thanks so much for hanging out on the playlist, Doug! Great to have you here. And congrats again on the book!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Aerosmith has some great songs. I think my problem is with Steve Tyler and his scary giant mouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm efd:

I mentioned "Strutter" was a hell of an opening track for a debut album, but "ELO Kiddies" is also right up there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Aitch:

Looks like it should have a hook in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Handy Haversack:

Legit, Lizzie. Legit.

The opening of this song had me and Kate trying to figure out if the phone was really ringing. (We still have a landline -- and a rotary!)
  11:10pm Ben London:

It's amazing how good Robin Zander and Steven Tyler still sing these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm McGroovey:

I put the book on my Christmas list. And I need to pull out my Starz records tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm efd:

@Handy I've had that happen to me with this song for 43 years now. You'd think I'd learn.
  11:10pm Doug Brod:

Thanks, EFD. It was a pleasure. So glad to find kindred spirits. A friend had the best description of the book: "The ultimate mid-life crisis stocking stuffer!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm ultradamno:

His tendency to kind of scat and all of the scarves was annoying, but they were a fierce rock band in the 70s.

AC/DC was better but still...
Avatar 11:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Loves HulloKiddies. They do remind me of Alice! ...& I like to think of cats & make it Hello Kitties...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

  11:11pm SeanG:

glad I tuned in! ELO KIDDIES ELO KIDDIES
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm ultradamno:

Scat singing, I'm referring to, to be clear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Stevel:

Yes to the scatting, and yet...

www.youtube.com...

I was there, shooting the race. Fantastic few moments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm McGroovey:

You can't (or shouldn't) listened to AC/DC all the time. Sometimes you have to listen to the Carpenters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm drowsy:

Live KISS is best KISS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Handy Haversack:

Ha, efd, you're the best!

Maybe Julianna Hatfield will do an album of Aerosmith covers -- it could be redemptive for me!

DAMN, that "Elo Kiddies"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm ultradamno:

The Carpenters were my first ever show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm mariano:

A rotary landline? Whoa, easy there, Hollywood ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Stevel:

Never a Kiss fan, but I always wanted to see their show. Back in the day I heard it cost ONE MILLION DOLLARS!

OK, I've grown to like DRC, especially live.
  11:14pm phat:

That KISS reunion tour in the 90s was one the most amazing shows I've ever seen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm ultradamno:

When I saw them The Plasmatics opened. And they had a tank drum riser thing, it was kind of hilarious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Handy Haversack:

Don't make me dial you up, Pazuzu! If I dialed you, you'd think a brain tumor was a birthday present. SUBDIVISIONS.
  11:15pm phat:

Frehley shooting a rocket from his guitar! Fergodssake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I swear I remember a song “Bedpan Hunting” about preying on rich old women that Elo Kiddies made me think of but I find nothing on the internets!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm ultradamno:

Kiss had the tank, not Plasmatics. Who did their usual chainsaw schtick and whatnot
  11:15pm slugluv1313:

oh yes! even back then, i would sing this as Hello Kitties :)
Doug, EFD -- thanks so much!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm McGroovey:

Detroit Rock City was my favorite song when I was 12.

Then my friends told me Kiss want cool, so I had to switch to Pink Floyd. But Ummagumma, not Dark Side of the Moon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm McGroovey:

*Wasn't cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm ultradamno:

That was 83, stub twitter.com...

Oh, yes. I know this Cherry Baby song. No idea how. Is it on a power pop comp somewhere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm McGroovey:

Cherry Baby: I love this song. It screams "COVER ME!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm ultradamno:

I think it's the closest they got to a hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm McGroovey:

Power pop with a cowbell
Avatar 11:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm drowsy:

KISS wasn't cool or uncool - KISS had the girls in my grade school as fans, so the boys had to get up to speed. This was the Dynasty year, so maybe that was special.
  11:19pm Doug Brod:

Peaked at No. 33 on Billboard's top singles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm ultradamno:

Cherry Baby was probably The Runaways' Cherry Bomb and he just wasn't seeing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm McGroovey:

With whipped cream, or just plain whipped.
Avatar 11:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

They were the bedazzlers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm mariano:

Handy: I know it isn't, but it seems kind of strange that you can call a smartphone with a rotary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Tome:

bit.ly... < good deal good selection yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Handy Haversack:

Wait ... I thought ... I'm the Bedazzler?!

Mariano, sometimes we even get transduced text messages on it! O brave new world!
  11:23pm phat:

Totally. Adding Starz makes it a different kind of book.

Fantastic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm prof.fuzz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm xtrakrispy:

Sheer Mag’s (outta Philly) logo, is very reminiscent of the Starz logo. Coincidence?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm efd:

all this talk of Bedazzler makes me wonder if y'all realize that two members of Stag were on the playlist earlier...?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm ultradamno:

It's weird there's a Starz anthology without that logo on it. It's like putting out a Boston greatest hits record with the band name in comic sans
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Stevel:

efd: go ooonnnnnn.... (Not a shock)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Stevel:
