Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi, Todd-o-phonic Todd! Very nice update on Nick's part in changing "Sweet Adeline" in the Garnet Mimms original to "Sweet Caroline" as a song a drunk would sing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm mariano:

Hey TOPT, everyone!
Avatar 3:12pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Gaylord Fields: Sometimes the simple moves are the most genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Frank! I'm having a bottle of Basque cider right now. Gonne probably stick with that and beer while gambling. Probably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Frank In Queens:

Cheers, Handy. Just cracked a Sam Smith myself.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm xtrakrispy:

I bet you picked that up at Astor? It was in the bin next to mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm mariano:

Gaylord (@3:11): Well, there is that bar fight scene in "Victor/Victoria" in which iirc the drunks all wound up singing "Sweet Adeline" at the end, led by James Garner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm HyperDose:

If you hit the pork skin with the backside of a knife and it doesn't sound like Fred Astaire tapping, it ain't done!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm HyperDose:

@Mister Dobalina Nice to know we're the fastest growing demographic on WFMU too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm medson:

Can’t wait to hear that interview
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@mariano: Yes, drunks warbling "Sweet Adeline" off-key is a standard trope from way, way back. I'm just impressed that Nick Lowe found its 21st century equivalent, and the replacement name scans perfectly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Mister Dobalina:

Good stuff, Hyper...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Mister Dobalina:

Sooooo...it turns out there is an opossum in Tompkins Square park. It hangs out in the trees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm xtrakrispy:

I think this song is about my neighbor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm mariano:

Oh, I see, Gaylord. Good point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Mister Dobalina:

Hope it plays nice with the red tail hawks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Handy Haversack:

@xtrakrispy, there's a fancy beer and cheese store in my neighborhood that carries good cider. This is one of staples from there.
  3:36pm WM:

One of my favorite songs by the MC5!
  3:37pm Paulie B:

Just popping in to say this is my favorite Dead Boys song.
  3:37pm Betsy O:

Thanks I give to thee Todd, for bringing Wayne, Rob, Fred, Dennis and Mike back onto the airwaves for this ole’ Detroit girl who was weened on the 5 in concert!!!! Love You!!!

What Paulie B said!
Avatar 3:38pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

You're welcome Betsy O! That was a fun interview...
Avatar 3:41pm Nutley Sam:

Excited to hear Bobby Elliott on the show next week! I'm very curious about his late-60s toupee but you might not want to ask about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello from the front yard with wifi and Bluetooth. Was kind of hoping these leaves would rake themselves, but it's not working.
  3:43pm WM:

@Betsy O: When and where did you hear MC5? I was very lucky and got the hear them at Stonybrook University on Long Island in 1972. Much later in 2018 I heard Wayne Kramer at Irving Plaza on his MC50 tour.
Avatar 3:44pm Nutley Sam:

@Todd, you familiar w the mono version of Run Run Run with the crazy heavy fuzz guitar overdub?
  3:44pm ashley morey:

Great Wyldlife song! Nice show today as always
Avatar 3:45pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Nutley Sam: I have a foreign 7" will have to compare and contrast. Also, you and I share a special bond with Mr. Elliott.
Avatar 3:47pm Joe B:

will there be any bowling questions for Mr. Elliott?
Avatar 3:47pm Nutley Sam:

@Todd you could address that sentence to Bobby as "Also, you and I share a special bond with Mr. Elwitt."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm SeanG:

Hey Todd-O! did you ever interview Vanda and/or Young on yr show??

Avatar 3:48pm MFlynn:

Love this Replacements performance
Avatar 3:49pm Nutley Sam:

@Joe, He Is Heavy, He's My Bowling Ball?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm medson:

Was this a back to back night show?
  3:50pm Betsy O:

@WM, I was so lucky to live a short bus ride on the Clairmont Line to the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. My high school friends and I would see them there often, they being the house band and where they recorded their first album. I also saw them at the Wayne State Free Concerts held at Tartar Field, which one can now be seen on YouTube, plus other smaller venues in and around Detroit. When they played with the Stooges,... well, the roof came down!
Avatar 3:50pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@SeanG: Unfortunately not. @medson: Nope...
Avatar 3:51pm Joe B:

@Sam - On a Ball Return
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm medson:

I dont know why I always think it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Handy Haversack:

Up $12 in poker so far, Todd! Keep 'em coming!
Avatar 3:52pm Joe B:

@medson - the Mats show right before this was a total mail-in at City Gardens
  3:54pm Betsy O:

@WN,... all those MC5 concerts were from 1968 to 70, but I never made it to MC50, which did come through DC where I live now, so was it good and did it live up to your 19 72 memory of the bands sound?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Handy Haversack:

HA! Thanks, Todd!
  3:55pm yerfriendpaul:

I want Handy! Ha ha
  3:57pm Victrola Tom:

@Handy I’ve never tried playing poker during Todd’s show. I’m afraid the distraction factor would be a disadvantage!
  3:57pm Bill D:

Silver Train ALWAYS sends chills up my spine, it's that great!
Avatar 3:58pm Frank Verplanck:

Reminds me of a local Chinese restaurant that had a sign on faded paper, taped to the wall with the scotch tape all yellow and barely hanging on, "No Lobster Today". Still get a laugh thinking about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm medson:

@joe b the were legendary drunk that night.
Avatar 4:00pm Nutley Sam:

@Todd thanks for staying on message w the advice to stay safe, it's important to keep it on the front burner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Bootsie:

This is great!
  4:03pm WM:

@Betsy O; Whenever Todd plays anything by MC5 I always boast about having heard them live once. You are truly blessed! A witness to history several times over! I think I noticed a poster for a performance of Blue Cheer, MC5, and the Stooges at the Grande Ballroom. You didn't by any chance catch that gig (and if you did do you still have your hearing)?
  4:05pm WM:

Yes, the MC5 lived up to and beyond my expectations. They performed Ramblin' Rose (of course), Tonight, some "new" songs (this was just before the release of High Time) including Gotta Keep Moving and they closed with Black to Com. Wayne Kramer still sounded great in 2018. He still plays guitar as good or better than ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Handy Haversack:

@Victrola Tom: So far, so good, but I don't want to get ahead myself!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm medson:

Oh boy. He’s backtracking HAHA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm thedunkel:

!Cheap Trick!
  4:11pm Victrola Tom:

@Handy you’re obviously playing cash, I’m strictly wired for tournament play. I like the comforting sense of an even starting point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm mariano:

This British Jets kicks ass.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Gaylord Fields:

Todd, now the kids can relate to that version of "Having a Party"! (And by "kids" I mean the 50-year-olds.)
  4:21pm Dennis Diken:

Go Todd! Can’t wait for Bobby Elliot interview!
  4:23pm Betsy O:

@ WM,... you were indeed fortunate to see both incarnations of the 5. No, I did not see Blue Cheer the night they payed with the MC5, but did when they opened for Cream!!! Indeed the ears did ring overnight often when seeing those early concerts. Also saw the 5 open for the Yardbirds, Mother’s of Invention and Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis. We were just kids, 16 years old and had no idea that what and who we were seeing would end up Rock Royalty of sorts. It was just a matter of luck to living close to such a venue and having that youthful curiosity in that time period.
  4:24pm Victrola Tom:

I see Gaylord and Joe B have joined the party! Welcome lads!

@Gaylord my thoughts exactly. It’s not like I memorized the weekend lineup or anything! FYI, my go to, 6PM Flintstones, followed by Happy Days, then come back at 10 for back to back Hogans Hero’s!
  4:47pm WM:

@Betsy O: Fantastic adolescent memories! You should write down everything you can remember about MC5 and post it on one of the many websites dedicated to the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Gaylord Fields:

And then Carol, Perry, TZ, Hitch, Mannix, Cannon, Barnaby, Highway Patrol — and then off to sleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Frank In Queens:

@Gaylord, are you ready for Saturday morning cartoons on MeTV next year?
  4:49pm Victrola Tom:

If only I could stay up that late!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Jeff formerly from Rahway:

Is this TFC w/o Gerry?
  4:49pm egould310:

The Teenage Fanclubs are one of my favorites. Good tune. Thanks for playing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Gaylord Fields:

@Frank: I am seriously NOT a morning person, but I will definitely make a Saturday exception for this upcoming cartoon lineup!
Avatar 4:50pm Joe B:

not sure what else there is to say about powderfinger. recorded june 12, 1975 during the Zuma sessions.
Avatar 4:51pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Joe B: That's plenty! Thank you!
  4:51pm Victrola Tom:

This TFC tune is from their upcoming, yes?
Avatar 4:52pm Joe B:

I'm starting a Teenage Fanclub tribute band, Middle-Aged Fanclub
Avatar 4:52pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@VT: Yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm medson:

@joe b haha. Sign me up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Gaylord Fields:

@VT: Being up late is a fringe benefit of "working" from home.
  4:56pm egould310:

@ Joe B I’ll play bass or drums in that band.

By the way, if there are any other listeners in Seattle, wanna’ start a band? I’ll play bass, drums or guitar.
  4:57pm Victrola Tom:

@Joe B Ha, by coincidence, I’m forming a Modern Lovers cover band called the Ancient Lovers! Can we open for you?
Avatar 4:58pm Hoboken Jack:

Hi Jeff, no need to return greeting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Frank In Queens:

Kudos, Todd. That's some inspired Djing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Frank In Queens:

Hey Bab-bit!!!
  5:05pm BetsyO:

@WM,... thanks for the idea of writing all those MC5 and Stooges memories down and sharing them,... I will! So glad to meet you here on Todd’s show,... and indeed, ‘Black to Comm’ ‘Sister Anne’ and Kick Out the Jams’ are my favorites.

Side note, the poster of the 5 and Blue Cheer was designed by the late Gary Grimshaw, who created those psychedelic handbills and posters for the Grande Ballroom, and a regular attendee of the venue, and believe me, my female friends and I had our eyes and hearts on him, though he was a little older and already had a lot of ladies around him.

Happy Holidays WM, and all here rocking their hearts out!
  5:05pm Willie:

Goodbye Hoboken Jack - I have to run!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm medson:

I cannot sing that line
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Now that we can use emojis here, maybe there should be personal emojis for listeners. That way, we can send subtle greetings to each other and not cause a ruckus. 🙋 Like Carol Burnett's ear tug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Frank In Queens:

Side 2 of Damned Damned Damned can hardly be topped!
  5:09pm egould310:

Goofball guitar player, fronted by Vampire Elvis. Hell of a band that Damned.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm medson:

I’d like to see Faz Waltz live
  5:19pm WM:

I think Gary Grimshaw also designed a poster for the Sun Ra Arkestra and MC5. Now that is a gig I would have loved to see! And in fact I did catch a gig like that when DKT/MC5 (Davis, Kramer, Thompson) played with The Sun Ra Arkestra (under the direction of Marshal Allan) at Central Park NYC 2005. Sun Ra - another formative influence for me starting from my adolescences and beyond.
  5:20pm Rachel Bo Bachel:

Awww Todd you put a big smile on my face while I am doing laundry!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, Rache!
Avatar 5:20pm james from witches' corner:

According to my local paper channel 33 svenghouli is 'the thing' with Kurt Russell 1981. Also, isn't there a vocal group song 'thing from another world?'
Avatar 5:22pm Mailman Tom:

I have a Grande Ballroom poster signed by Gary Grimshaw!
  5:23pm Jett:

@Tom Montclair Rock and wrestling connection!
Avatar 5:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Bobby Elliot for the Holliedays !
Avatar 5:23pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@james from witches corner: you need to either move or get a new paper.
  5:26pm WM:

@Betsy O: I think you might have enough material for a novel or at least a short story. And be sure to work in your infatuation with Gary Grimshaw. Work with your autobiographical experience and embellish from there in a 60s coming of age story.

And good for you Mailman Tom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Phillippe Bastille:

What's goin' on in Brooklyn, Handy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm suzyhotrod:

OMG. You played it. If you played it, maybe I’ll have the guts to play the Billy Idol track tomorrow

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Handy Haversack:

Phillippe, I was way up at poker. Still up, but some of these Scots are coming for me! Thankfully, Todd is spinning the energy tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Handy I found cheating to be helpful when playing cards.

Saw a handful of non-breeding ruddy ducks (I think) today. Black bills instead of blue.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm mariano:

Hey Pillippe! Ya know, I offered to teach Handy a couple of nifty false shuffles and cuts... Speaking of which, ever see any clips of the late, great Ricky Jay's card cheating skills? Pretty mesmerizing.

Mariano, did you say hi to Jack?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm listener 126464:

do we have homework this weekend?
  5:46pm BetsyO:

@WM & Mailman Tom,... so glad to know others are familiar with Grimshaw’s art and design of that time periods and have a few of the works themselves!
WM, I saw Sun Ra at the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz festival in 72’, with Howlin’ Wolf and others. Those years were filled with the new artists and revivals for many an older Blues and Jazz performers.
Thanks again for your creative ideas to write and share those experiences. Growing up in Detroit meant seeing Motown acts performing around town, often free, or seeing Mitch Ryder, Aretha Franklin and the Temptations before the MC5, Amboy Dukes, Stooges and Alice Cooper took over the scene. Fun times, as today has been here!
Happy Holidays to you all, and keep rocking and can’t wait to see live music again next year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm mariano:

Handy: I most certainly did. Awoke from millennia of slumber and slithered through the eldritch halls of R'lyeh to arise from the briny depths *expressly* to greet him. Speaking of... since I've surfaced for the first time in so long, anything else anyone needs?

@BetsyO: If you do get around to writing some of your down some of your music memories please drop a note on the WFMU comments board. I'm sure many of TOPT's listeners would be interested to hear what what you have to say. And great to know that you heard Sun Ra too! Be sure to read the biography Space is the Place by John Szwed.

Thanks Todd. Catch ya on the radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm mariano:

Phillippe: Hmm, universal temporal disruptions aren't really my thing, I'm more about smashing things underfoot and driving people insane with my fell presence. I can have a word with some of Azathoth's minions though.

Thank you TOPT, the playlist has left a vertical burn mark down my screen! Thanks to Ruth for opping, take care everyone.
