Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Listener comments!

  7:04pm Listener Gregory:

I've signed in to the comment board, but I haven't turned the show on yet. The shame of it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm diciassette:

Hello! Whoa! Witchy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm diciassette:

I've gone straight to Discogs and ordered Cowardy Custard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Bronwyn Bishop:

hey gregory and diciassette! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Bronwyn Bishop:

very glad to inspire this diciassette :)
  7:12pm Listener Gregory:

The music is on now. It does add to the playlist experience really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm doctorjazz:

Helllooooooooo!
  7:17pm Listener Gregory:

I am rereading Gravity's Rainbow, with a helpful guide which tells me that Thomas Pynchon hates Noel Coward, and negative references to him can be found back to his first short stories and at various places in Gravity's Rainbow.
This knowledge will surely come in handy some day.
  7:20pm Listener Gregory:

E.G., when someone is acting overly civilized, a character asks, "Is this Noel Coward or some shit?" (Please excuse my French.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm diciassette:

lol uncyclopedia.ca...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Bronwyn Bishop:

hey doctorjazz :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: That's hilarious, Sondheim hates him too, they should form a support group
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: this is amazing and so specific
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm diciassette:

not sure if I like that site!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Bronwyn Bishop:

it does seem a bit mean spirited
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm diciassette:

It seems really un-Canadian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Acidified Fingers!
  7:38pm Listener Gregory:

@diciassette, very interesting! Pynchon is not easy going. The helpful guide brings out a lot of things I wouldn’t notice and also explains how carefully structured the book is. But it’s not for everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey Henry, we just had a not since carrie special lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Bronwyn Bishop:

One of these dudes sounds kinda like a 1920s Michael Nesmith
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm doctorjazz:

Love these 20s choruses!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Bronwyn Bishop:

hard to believe it's been 100 years since some since of the great musical theatre writers got their start
  7:47pm Listener Gregory:

Those chesty voices were super popular back in the 20s, but I find them borderlines listenable today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Webhamster Henry:

I used to have a piano roll (and matching reproducing piano) of "Selections from Sunny"
  7:50pm Listener Gregory:

I guess we can thank Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby for changing that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Webhamster Henry:

Thank the Microphone - the sine qua non of crooning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Bronwyn Bishop:

see i LOVE that type of voice lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Bronwyn Bishop:

anyone know what's happening on this album cover? i dont get it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm diciassette:

My tooth thinks it has something to do with dental work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Bronwyn Bishop:

this song sort of has the same energy as "a hundred ways to lose a man"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm diciassette:

I discovered Elaine Stritch on 30 Rock, and I have been in awe ever since!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Elaine Stritch Fact: She was the first choice to play Ursula in The Little Mermaid, but was fired because she kept fighting with Howard Ashman
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Webhamster Henry:

As The Girls Go is one of the very few shows that has a recording of Burlesque Comedian Bobby Clark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Webhamster Henry:

His visual trademark was painted on glasses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm diciassette:

Bronwyn, do you like it when Chet Baker sings?
  8:05pm Listener Gregory:

I listened to this record about a thousand times as a kid. Sniff!
  8:10pm Listener Gregory:

Barbara Cook could have sung in one of those old operettas, but I like her anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm WR:

Hi folks, here to hear for the 2nd hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Bronwyn Bishop:

hey WR :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: I've barely ever listened to Chet Baker so I don't really have an opinion, I need to listen to him more!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: She was in Candide which is basically an operetta
  8:26pm Listener Gregory:

Right! Awesome Cunegonde.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm diciassette:

I was curious because, as a vocalist, I'm not sure how to classify him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I want to extend a big thank you by the way to diciassette and Listener Laura in Rockaway Beach for their generous pledges, I keep forgetting to thank them in my mic breaks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Webhamster Henry:

Barbara Cook was delightful! Check out her concert recordings too.
  8:30pm Listener Gregory:

If you can see the film Let’s Get Lost (about Chet Baker), do so!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm diciassette:

I will definitely definitely. I saw Chet Baker in a bathtub in a Mina video! (which was from a movie that is hard to find around here)
  8:35pm Listener Gregory:

It may be hard to find. I believe there were problems with music rights or something, and so it may not have made it onto DVD. For some time it was impossible to find, but hopefully that’s been resolved.
  8:36pm Listener Gregory:

Les Amants de la Bastille is the Frenchest possible title for a play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm diciassette:

Aha! Evidence! youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm doctorjazz:

Baker was such a sad figure, but I liked his music.
  8:56pm Listener Gregory:

More operetta? Belt it out, brother!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Bronwyn! Nice weekend all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm diciassette:

Sam Levene was absolutely marvelous in The Killers! Sam Levene was absolutely marvelous! And he has met the Queen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm diciassette:

Thank you Bronwynn
  9:01pm KWilde:

Thanks! Good show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thank you all for listening!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm WR:

Thank you Bronwyn, laters all.
  9:05pm Listener Gregory:

Theater is a lady. Also, luck. And probably other things too.
  9:06pm Listener Gregory:

Thanks for a fun show, @Bronwyn.
