"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am YETI BOB:

@DJ Guin: Never gonna happen. He's going to have a cerebral hemmorage at one of these press conferences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Handy Haversack:

We hadn't gotten to the Kate reads Handy the Gothamist headlines part of the morning yet, so I had no idea what you all were talking about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am DJ Guin:

@YETI -- it's anyone's guess when Ghouliani or Trumpski will grab a baby and use it as a human shield. Four more years will become wholly possible as a result. The sheer ignorance and blind devotion to these scumbags and fascism astounds me. Okay. Well, not really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am YETI BOB:

@HH: Don't know if you watch this sort of thing but Stephen Colbert had some great footage last night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am YETI BOB:

@HH: Rudy sweating constantly, ranting incoherently, re-enacting a scene from "My Cousin Vinnie", while his hair dye is dripping down both sides of his face.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I have a question. What are all these "fleet" mentions in social media referring to?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am YETI BOB:

@HH: If it were satire, I'd call it heavy-handed, but it was freaking REAL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am YETI BOB:

@Woods: A new thing that Twitter introduced, messages that disappear after 24 hours. As someone said "For when you want to say things that are too awful to stick around on Twitter!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am DJ Guin:

"Fleets work to address this by providing a space where the content disappears after 24 hours, while Fleets also can't be retweeted, liked or even replied to in public - people can only react to your Fleets via DMs. "
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Handy Haversack:

We're both Mx. Handy over here, DJG! And you can't see Uranus with the naked eye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am melinda:

It's fun to imagine the movies for these sounds. This is Morricone Island territory but with breakfast instead of dinner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am YETI BOB:

@HH: You're probably better off that way. I am needing to detox a bit from the amount of news and late-night TV I've been watching.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am YETI BOB:

on a more happy topic: Is it too early to declare Sparkle Division "Album of the year"? Is there another candidate I'm overlooking?
Avatar 9:31am John Allen:

not too soon, Sparkle Division is a Top 10

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am steveo:

hey good morning; my dear spouse is here and I suggested we put on the radio, it's John Allen, I said, and she said oh, sure, I don't mind John Allen. That's high praise! Also she pointed out that I'm wearing your shirt (the black Lambkin one).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Basinski's Lamentations is up there. Also, I found the Andrienne Lenker Instrumentals to be mucho-de-soothing-o.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am terminalhipness:

@ YETI - Sparkle Division is cool. Luke Stewart "Exposure Quartet" is def top 10 for me.
  9:34am Andres:

Morning John and all! I was thinking there was a connection but could not put my finger on Jan Hammer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am DJ Guin:

@steveo -- are you also wearing J.A's underwear? ;-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am DJ Guin:

Woof-Moo could sell soiled Air Personalities underwear in Japan and fund the station for 10 years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am terminalhipness:

@Woods - Just recently checked out 'Lamentations'. Really growing on me with every listen. Yet another artist I would not know about without JA show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am YETI BOB:

@terminalhipness: I haven't heard that one, adding to the "must check out" list!
  9:39am Mark R:

OK I'll stop now. Like all years, there are at least 10 or 20 albums that are classics that you'll still be listening to in 20 years. Woods, I'm thinking they're going to do a virtual inauguration. That guarantees you-know-who won't be there. Also, Biden doesn't need big crowds to validate his self-worth, unlike some presidents I know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am DJ Guin:

@Woods - last I read, yes. But getting a hotel room is nigh impossible. Just to be there and show support and laugh at Trumpski's COVIDiots and White Supremacists' would be worth the trip.
Avatar 9:39am John Allen:

note to self, edible jazz underwear marathon premium
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am YETI BOB:

@MarkR: I'll check that out too - I like Marissa Anderson a lot. Honestly I'm probably not even remembering the records that came out in January/February, aka the "Before Times".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@terminalhipness For me it's been both this station and monthly readings of The Wire. There's SO much great stuff out there! Also a big an of Basinski's Disintegration Tapes.
  9:41am Mark R:

Bob, I literally make a list for that very reason (yes, I'm insane.)
  9:42am Andres:

Plenum - Are we talking HVAC or general assembly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Handy Haversack:

JA: Intimate Solos.
  9:42am Mark R:

OMG Ella's Lost Berlin Tapes! I was just listening to that, it's amazing. OK now I'll really, actually stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Deborah:

It's 9:43!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am YETI BOB:

@KrysO: I'll be watching that after this show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am terminalhipness:

@Woods - Haven't gotten the Wire lately. I was a big fan of 'Signal to Noise"... Gone now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am DJ Guin:

@Woods - in lieu of In Person attendance, WMFU could setup a Zoom Meeting Watching Party with Blackjack and Hookers and replete with Drinking Games and Bong Hits.
Tell Staysh I want partial credit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am maestroso:

Lamin! I remember his show, it was excellent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am TomDash:

morning Deborah, and fellow jazz cats. Looks Like I didn't miss Jan yet?
  9:46am Mark R:

The Wire's occasional compilations are always great, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am terminalhipness:

@YETI - me too! Thanks Krys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Krys O: That looks super-cool. Will have to check it out after work. And hey, Olsiewicz? That sounds mighty Polish (this comment coming from me, Mr. Saleski). Ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am YETI BOB:

Jeff Parker's "Suite for Max Brown" was released on 24 Jan 2020 so that's a candate. Also "Chicago Underground Quartet" was a strong album this year. And maybe this "Exploding Star Orchestra". I'm sure I'm overlooking so many things!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am DJ Guin:

::yawn:: Time for Timer. I hanker for a hunk of cheese.

"Tralfaz. Is that Polish? "
"No. It's Spanish for 'Go F#ck yourself."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

That Jeff Parker is great. I love recordings that are hard to categorize.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Handy Haversack:

Fingers crossed that Bandcamp also starts carrying used books. Since the Ebay revelations, I'm stuck waiting until we're out of town and in places where the real estate "market" will let used bookstores survive.

@YETI Luke Stewart “Exposure QUINTET” (I might as well get it right). So far as I can tell, first time together (on record )for Ken Vandermark and Ernest Dawkins…

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Handy Haversack:

Huh! Pretty cool, Barney Grubbs!

Woods -- and at some point (well, that point is probably rather easily located in feudalism), the cognitive leap on the part of the owner class that the rest of us *are not people*: that is what allows the hallowed profits-above-all.

  10:27am Neptune:

This is a good one - what is the genre?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am karlward:

That one Panda Bear show that Mick Jagger attended really made an impact I guess. Love the new Stones sound.
Avatar 10:32am John Allen:

after 60 years the Stones finally agreed to an outside producer....who came to work in footsie PJs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am PortsmouthJay:

Woods, Handy: I'm curious, I purchase music on Bandcamp each week and then it's uploaded to my Roon server, so I can play it through the stereo system. Is there a better way of organizing, or how do you organize all the digital purchases, or do you? Do you have a system? I feel like the digital only releases I forget about sometimes, whereas the physical media I order is accessible and played more often. Thoughts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Zetti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Handy Haversack:

PortsmouthJay, I'm probably not a great person to ask since I kind of feel the same. I just DL it all onto the computer into a single folder, and that folder is my VLC Media Library. I listen to it all through VLC.

I've got close to a terabyte of digital music sitting on a RAID array that I basically never play unless I have a reason to search for some very specific song. And a shelf of CDs that also mostly remain unplayed. Only LPs and WFMU get serious attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Handy Haversack:

Bagpipe's willing to try, at least. He even gives pebbles an experimental chew if his path brings him near one on a walk. I hauled a muffin wrapper out of his mouth yesterday, which is much more pleasant than helping it get out the other end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am YETI BOB:

My digital music library is very well organized though, neste folders for Artist/Album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am YETI BOB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Handy Haversack:

Yeah, mine is too, to that extent, YB. When extracting Bandcamp ZIP files, it's easy to change the hyphen in the file name into a backslash, which then extracts the album to the artist folder (in Windows).

And Callipygian is down to maybe three teeth, so there's plenty of drooling, esp. when she shakes her head around because her extreme ear wax bothers her. So ... while there might be a *little* more dignity on the cat side, nothing is pure.

Ripeness is all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am TomDash:

@tim - that was my thought on first glance too! Like minds. I'm feeling a hammer about to drop though, just saying...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Ike:

@Handy, those are excellent cat names. Any more?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am TomDash:

Hammer Time!

Ike, the third cat, Lulu, arrived from the bodega already named, but it suits her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am YETI BOB:

moderncat.com has a list of People Foods you should NEVER Feed Your Cat, and another list of People Foods You CAN Feed Your Cat. Cheese made it on both lists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am YETI BOB:

"Cat approved cheese choices include cottage cheese, Swiss, cheddar or gouda."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

My CD collection is a total mess. Because it's well over 5k discs and lives half in corrugated cardboard boxes (ones still in jewel boxes) and half in banker's boxes (transferred to sleeves). I have half a mind to toss the whole lot out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am tim from champaign (now washington):

Man, that JAzz guitar smoothed out all the stress knots in my neck. Feelin melllll-o! Thanks, JA!

@TomDash - you know it!

The modern cat embraces the richness of ambiguity, YB. Like Borges.

The hound is about to take me on our walk. Hope to make it back before the end, but if not, I'll thank you now, JA, for another great Friday. steveo's partner was right! This show is unmindable!

Be well, all. CATch youse soon.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am PortsmouthJay:

@Woods -- I sold a ton to Bullmoose for store credit and then bought some vinyl. It saved me so much space.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am YETI BOB:

@Woods: I got rid of most of CDs ages ago, just kept the really important/irreplaceable ones. And all the WFMU premiums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am terminalhipness:

@Woods - I no longer feel alone, thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am YETI BOB:

I had a sort of unstable period and was moving a lot, which inspired me to get rid of a lot of things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@YETI BOB: The count used to be closer to 8k. I "downsized." I may do that again. We shall see (** dang it, Zoom meeting in 3 minutes **)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am terminalhipness:

Discovered this Lemon Quartet back in the spring, when I was putting together "mask themed" playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am YETI BOB:

I started seriously asking myself: "Am I ever going to play this again?" and not just "Is this collectible?". It was liberating. And if you get rid of 3/4 of your records (or books) and only keep the top 25%, then you are left with a really top-notch collection ... and some space on your shelf for new records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am YETI BOB:

Yay, my homie Jeff Parker! Thanks JA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Krys O.:

@Yeti Bob: I can relate. My most recent move to a smaller space with fewer closets to squirrel away boxes prompted me to cull many items. I donated quite a bit to WFMU and to the Vietnam Vets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am YETI BOB:

Jeff Parker might win over Sparkle Division. Tough call, but fortunately nobody is really asking me to pick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Ken From Hyde Park:

Was it on a Pseu or Fabio chat board yesterday about talking to oneself? A comic strip today must have overhead it. www.shoecomics.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am PortsmouthJay:

Yes... culling the herd of many promo CDs and keeping essentials is great, the rest is digital and backed up, with a lot of vinyl but that's also essential these days for room, I went through a period of buying every Thrill Jockey and International Anthem on vinyl.. no room!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am YETI BOB:

@PJ: I was buying every IA release there for a while too. They are just sooo good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am terminalhipness:

YETI,Kyrs,Woods - Maybe there's hope for me yet. If I have to move all that stuff again, that will probably be the catalyst...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am PortsmouthJay:

@YETI - No doubt! Such a great label. I also wnet back to listen to Isotope recently. Remember that outfit? They opened for Tortoise one summer back in ... 98?

Woods ... I have a modern Mac but cannot access the images you send?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Krys O.:

@Honey Bear: I didn't look at dispersing books, videos or music as getting rid of them. I permanently shared them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am steveo:

@Krys O: Thanks. This room used to be one of the bays of a 3-car garage/barn. We had somebody build out the room and then I installed the shelving. Soooooo many giant lag screws!

The weird thing is that I'm not comfortable calling this our library. It's seems sort of....I dunno...snooty?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Krys O.:

Thanks, morphe!!! You share a birthday with my brother-in-law. He turns 74. My sibs are in their 60s and 70s. I'm a caboose baby, youngest of five after a gap of seven years. That and having older parents helped give me historical perspective on culture and what not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Krys O.:

You can call it 'Fred' if you want to. I labelled boxes 'library' when I moved my collection even though that just meant my living room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am TomDash:
