Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Sure, rowed the boat a' shore.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm WR:

Here for the start, washing up after dinner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Little Danny:

Fiends! Friends! Matt, Flash, J2tK, still b/p, WR! You're in the right place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm chresti:

Hi Little Danny and flame boats!
Avatar 10:04pm Franco Twinkie:

Danny, I was just bathing in paint stripper. I feel brand new!
Avatar 10:04pm TDK60:

Hi Little Danny. I'm still awoke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Little Danny:

Hi Chresti, hi Franco, hi TDK, hi coela, hi all!
Avatar 10:05pm Shaw:

Sounding great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Matt from New Orleans:

I can’t believe this never got released
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Little Danny:

Hi Shaw! Thank you!
Avatar 10:05pm still b/p:

"Paint Stripper" song to "Day Tripper" tune. Pencils ready, and go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Little Danny:

None deeper than the Motown vaults Matt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm chresti:

She was a paaaaiiiiiint stripper, yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Little Danny:

I wrestled with some paint stripper recently, Franco. Burned a coupla holes where it dripped on a drop clothe
Avatar 10:07pm TDK60:

I thought Barnes sounds like Marvin Gaye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Little Danny:

Definitely one, and one of the best, of many Gaye-inspired Detroit singers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm chresti:

Terrors on wheels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Matt from New Orleans:

Mulate is still putting out great music
Avatar 10:09pm Franco Twinkie:

I have a feeling this video was staged, that young man getting up in the morning didn't have a hard-on. What do you think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Matt from New Orleans:

Mulatu not sure how that typo happened my bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Little Danny:

@chresti: Truly. Crazy kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Little Danny:

I missed that part, Franco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Matt from New Orleans:

You haven’t delved into Ethio-Jazz in quite some time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Aitch:

Flambe! Hi all.
Avatar 10:12pm TDK60:

I saw M. Astatke in Central Park, maybe 5 year ago. Great band. He was relaxed, playing vibes, percussion, keys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Little Danny:

Hi Aitch!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Little Danny:

I want a coupla dozen comps of this stuff, Evan.

Avatar 10:18pm Flash Strap:

i might have about a half dozen, i could stand to hear more for sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Aitch:

Lubed for life ball-joints!
Avatar 10:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Rocker suspension or roasted chicken - you decide!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Matt from New Orleans:

I don’t think Soundway will be doing another volume. They seemed more focused on putting out contemporary music than reissues these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Little Danny:

I still actually see some of those '80s Ford Rangers knocking around
Avatar 10:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Mazy, Daisy, Paisley and Hazy - The girl CSNY.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Little Danny:

I wish I had "Paisley" and "Hazy" 45s ready to go, Franco
Avatar 10:24pm Franco Twinkie:

How about The Brogues?
Avatar 10:25pm still b/p:

Do they play sham-rock?
Avatar 10:26pm Franco Twinkie:

Shoe gaze, I think.
Avatar 10:28pm Franco Twinkie:

You need a square jaw to talk about the new Ford Ranger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm chresti:

That's kind of like my dad's truck.
Avatar 10:29pm StringOFperils:

Great 70s hair, and chromoly mags.
Avatar 10:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Chrestis dad does indeed have a Ranger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm chresti:

It's 84?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Little Danny:

I was fully expecting that track to drive straight into the lake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm JtotheK:

sierra nevada celebration ale time of year. i'm enjoying one now this evening. FINALLY.
Avatar 10:31pm StringOFperils:

Nothin beats havin an ale and watching vintage truck stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm WR:

That Richard Marino Misty is oddly compelling.
Avatar 10:33pm Franco Twinkie:

I like to think about riding a dirt bike wearing tight Levis while I'm stuffing corn bread in my mouth. Ah, youth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Little Danny:

ES.OH.PEE. Welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Little Danny:

A very good album of space age easy listening, WR. Neat little electronic bits on it too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm chresti:

Wow, those effects with the electrical charges or whatever that was hovering over the truck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm WR:

My what big plums you found Franco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm coelacanth∅:

considering tight pants was the norm at that time i probably have done that
(maybe not corn bread, but something)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Little Danny:

Which truck is right for you?
Avatar 10:37pm Franco Twinkie:

WR, amazing, innit? That was about three hours ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm coelacanth∅:

a dodge, thank you. or a toyota.
Avatar 10:38pm TDK60:

These were not TV commercials for the public? Or were they for internal auto corp. use?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Little Danny:

@coela: sorry, which model of '84 Ford Ranger is right for you? I'll take the grey one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm chresti:

Music goes well with the truck Odyssey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Little Danny:

I assume they went out to car dealerships, TDK

But I don't know
Avatar 10:39pm TDK60:

ah that might be it, promo for dealers..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm coelacanth∅:

very distant Danny, almost inaudible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Matt from New Orleans:

That explains it. I was wondering what was going over there.
Avatar 10:41pm Franco Twinkie:

My starter truck was a 1968 Ford F-100. I was 16. I ran into a lot of stuff, and the truck was no worse for wear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm coelacanth∅:

okay, if you're giving trucks away Danny , i'll take the most expensive one.
Avatar 10:45pm Franco Twinkie:

My dream truck is a Toyota FJ55 Landcruiser. Orange and cream, just like a Dreamsicle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

i've never owned a truck. every time i'm in the market for another vehicle i look at trucks but everything that's not a mess is too expensive.
(driven them though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Matt from New Orleans:

Iron Pig does seem your style Franco
Avatar 10:47pm still b/p:

My li'l ol' Toyota's fine...though age brings adventures: the gas tank dropped alarmingly low last week due to a strap rust-through failure, and I learned yesterday when trying to gas up again for first time after the repair that the weight-drop had PULLED the neck inward/downward so tight I thought I wasn't gonna get the cap open. The good news is that my jury-rigged chain under there as a temp belt-up to allow driving to garage was described as a "good job" by my mechanic. And, yea, the unhandyman's ego was stroked a little bit.
And may the truck serve many more years
Avatar 10:47pm TDK60:

I learned how to drive on an old truck (1965 Ford?) w/standard gears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm coelacanth∅:

do they still make those Franco?
  10:48pm Dean:

I owned a truck long ago, a VW diesel thing. Mostly, though, I hate cars. How and why do people fixate on those things?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Matt from New Orleans:

Not in 40 years
Avatar 10:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Matt, I had an FJ60 and destroyed it out in Death Valley. It's a wonder I survived.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

good job s b/p!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Little Danny:

Still b/p: what year and model Toyota?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Matt from New Orleans:

Toyota still makes Landcruisers but they’re strictly SUVs
Avatar 10:50pm TDK60:

still b/p - I had an old Toyota Corolla station wagon. The darn thing woulda kept on a-runnin' had the body not fallen apart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm JtotheK:

always enjoy learning about covers of Tighten Up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Little Danny:

@Dean: I love auto design and history (and to some degree, mechanical/engineering stuff), absolutely hate their legacy and the irreversible destruction they're wrought.

"It's complicated."
Avatar 10:52pm still b/p:

'02 Tacoma. Since I backed into a pole with tailgate down last year the back looks like its been in a fight.
Many people have bent and folded themselves into the Xtra cab little back seat, and when they get out it's like going through birth again. i should charge for the experience of renewal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Ignore Function:

Hearing Tighten Up in Spanish is why I pledge to WFMU.
Avatar 10:53pm Franco Twinkie:

I hate the new ones, Matt. What stupid looking things they've turned into. Sport shoe design, feh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm JtotheK:

The comment on discogs for this Bob & Gene 45 made me chuckle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Matt from New Orleans:

They also start at 85K Franco. Not the vehicle for the common man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

i generally despise "sport utility vehicles" for several reasons -but some of the old ones are cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Matt from New Orleans:

Was it by midnightrunner Jason?
  10:57pm Dean:

Let me complicate matters further. I simply adore a show broadcast (still to this day, I believe) on KPFK in Los Angeles, "The Car Show," which is among the most intelligent talk shows I've ever heard on radio. These guys (mostly) get it. They do talk about history, design, racing, new models...

But ultimately I despise cars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm JtotheK:

nope, comment on Discogs was from a user id of BethesdaMD.
Avatar 10:57pm Franco Twinkie:

My everyday truck is 2000 GMC Sierra single cab. I also have a 1974 Chevy Cheyanne Super full of dried leaves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Matt from New Orleans:

Midnightrunner is my favorite commenter on Discogs Jason and he’s prolific. He creates anecdotes about the reaction to each record and they’re absolutely ridiculous.
Avatar 10:58pm TDK60:

I used to want a black Checker cab; all that leg room in the back.
Avatar 10:59pm Franco Twinkie:

I'd rather walk, but I live in L.A. and as the song goes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

i learned to drive in a car but learned stick on an old truck. a small dump truck.
i'm Thankful i had the opportunity to learn stick on something that was a little difficult and could handle some abuse.
i've never replaced a clutch that wasn't wrecked already when i bought it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Little Danny:

I see you Ignore F! Glad you responded to that one. I'll listen to any version of "Tighten Up."
  11:01pm Dean:

Why does anybody want a car? So fucking weird.

OTOH, I love drag racing.

LA is no less walkable than any other town in the world. Don't be a fucking pussy.
Avatar 11:01pm TDK60:

..learning on a standard helped, coel. Helpful in snow, mountains, etc.
Avatar 11:02pm Franco Twinkie:

I learned to drive a stick in 1965 Mustang. My sisters friend Riva taught me how in the parking lot of the library. It was hard to concentrate on what I was doing because she was such a fox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

ahh, Riva...
Avatar 11:03pm TDK60:

I'd like to drive a Citroen, see what it's like.. But I'm not likely to. (Not so into cars anyway).
Avatar 11:04pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean - shut up you Berkeley twat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm chresti:

You can walk in LA if you don't mind the wear on your shoes after walking 10 miles to work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm coelacanth∅:

i have a long list of classic cars i'd like to own, just for a little while each. citroën ds is easily in the top 5. what an ingenious design, for the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

chresti and if you don't have other things you'd like/you need to do with that 4-5 hours/day (round trip)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Little Danny:

Citreon SM Coupe circa 1970. WOOF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Matt from New Orleans:

I would disagree with you on that Dean. I once walked from Vermont and Beverly to The Beverly Center to go to the Bose store because no buses were coming. Only one bus passed me the entire walk but I couldn’t catch it. That was really miserable once I got near The Wilshire Country Club and the sidewalk disappeared.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Little Danny:

The women in this clip are so great.
Avatar 11:11pm still b/p:

Nice. Doris Day. Eve Arden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Little Danny:

Whoops. Now it's Anton.

@Franco: somehow you must have run across Anton LaVey in your crazy CA adventures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm chresti:

Yeah Citroen. The deux chevaux.
Avatar 11:14pm TDK60:

Thanks for Broadcast and other dreamy stuff, may help to consider the idea of sleep...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Ignore Function:

Are you going to play some Anton LaVey, LD?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm coelacanth∅:

my parents almost bought a checker -c.1970. they stopped making changes to the design in 1967, so it was a new 1967 car in 1970.
checker gave it to us for a few weeks to test drive it. the talk at school was that we got a cadillac; i'm like that doesn't look like a cadillac!
us kids pushed for the checker, with the jump seats and all, but they went with the chevy kingswood wagon.
that turned out to be a lawsuit-sized lemon and almost killed my mother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Ignore Function:

He was an aficionado of obscure music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Little Danny:

@Ignore F: Am I remembering right that he has some album of pipe organ dirges? That woulda flowed right of Broadcast so nicely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm melinda:

hi everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Matt from New Orleans:

You’re correct Danny. It’s available on Bandcamp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm Little Danny:

OMG this Bruce Haack woulda been PERFECT during Anton LaVey.

Oh well.
Avatar 11:18pm Franco Twinkie:

I took my Volvo 122s wagon over to to my fiend Andys house to have him do the brakes, but before he would get started I had to help him push this Citroen DS into the street. The hydraulics had collapsed and it got stuck on the apron of the drive way. I had to tie a hauser rope to the front of my car and pull it. I snapped the rope. I left my car there and walked home(fuck you dean) I never saw that tank again. I think Andy called a wrecker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm Little Danny:

Hi Melinda! Delighted to see you here as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm coelacanth∅:

hi melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Little Danny:

@Matt: thanks for the confirmation! I believe the album is generally regarded as terribly boring parlor organ, too. But I haven't heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Ignore Function:

I have one 45 of him singing and that's plenty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Little Danny:

Oh wow Anton sings? "Sings"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm coelacanth∅:

aww, poor little amazon; it was the car's fault Franco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Little Danny:

Shouts out to my Geminis!
Avatar 11:22pm TDK60:

I remember this Zodiac LP. Far out man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm chresti:

My son and best friend are Geminis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm coelacanth∅:

...the 122 was always on my short list of cars i'd love to turn into a low rider.
...ever since i was little, but i never heard of it actually being done until the world wide web -where EVERYTHING has been done.
Avatar 11:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Not my car Coel, the Citroen! It belonged to this flake that owed Andy money. The end of that particular Volvo was much more hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Little Danny:

@chresti: Your son will be delighted to have been recognized thusly musically!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm WR:

野原で踊りたい気分です。

I feel like dancing in the fields.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Matt from New Orleans:

I dig the Curtis medley that’s on the album that Judy’s Moods in on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm coelacanth∅:

oh,haha... that's good. even though i love the citroën. obviously the hydrolics have to be well-maintained or shit like that's gonna happen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Aitch:

As part of my post-divorce re-jig I imported a '64 Buick Skylark coupe from N Carolina to Australia. It's a lovely thing, but long and hard to park with the wheel on the wrong side of the car.
Old Citroens for masochists only. Old Peugots and Renaults good though, indestructible, like old Toyotas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm coelacanth∅:

it's high time for a little nip. excuse me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm chresti:

I like Peugots.
Avatar 11:29pm Franco Twinkie:

I need more cornbread, be right back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm chresti:

Don't drive, coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm melinda:

I have a Peugot pepper grinder
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Matt from New Orleans:

Have a good night everyone. I’m putting the phone down but will be listening.
Avatar 11:33pm TDK60:

Night, DJ LD. See ya blue flames.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm chresti:

I briefly had a Peugot diesel, I liked it except for the exhaust leak that came inside the car, sold it quickly to a man from Jamaica who liked it because it reminded him of the taxis there.
'Night TDK60.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm WR:

I'm fading as well, thank you Danny, laters all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Little Danny:

@Aitch: Impressed that you imported a car. It's notoriously for the (in turn) masochists here in the states when it comes to importing cars. Especially of more recent Japanese manufacturers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm chresti:

Later WR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

'night Matt & TDK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm chresti:

Goodnight, Matt.

They look great to my 2020 design eye. My good friend's dad had one when I was growing up.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm coelacanth∅:

gnight WR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm coelacanth∅:

when i was little we'd occasionally see a peugot or citroën on the highway and always spewing smoke. dad told me they were 2-stroke engines.
still they both intrigued me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm coelacanth∅:

(and of course columbo drove a peugot)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm coelacanth∅:

what's he building in there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm chresti:

I think so, Danny, it had a similar shape to a Jag.
Avatar 11:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, When I worked at Universal, Columbos grey Peugot was parked in front of one of the bungalow offices on the lot. Most likely the trophy of some director.
Avatar 11:51pm Franco Twinkie:

Toluene without gloves. Oh, the folly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i noticed that. i was indestructible too -until i wasn't, and all that destruction kicked me in my ass.
Avatar 11:54pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup, me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm coelacanth∅:

the thing is,Franco i'd keep walking up to that peugot expecting a friendly shaggy dog to greet me. and be sad when that didn't happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm chresti:

Very nice set Danny.
Avatar 11:59pm Franco Twinkie:

That was a daily occurrence working on a big film lot, you learn to hide your disappointment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Little Danny:

Thank you Chresti!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am coelacanth∅:

Avatar 12:02am Franco Twinkie:

Avatar 12:03am Franco Twinkie:

Is that the same guy that was talking about Ford Rangers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04am melinda:

That 505 wagon looks nice. I miss cars having ample windows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04am coelacanth∅:

Avatar 12:05am Franco Twinkie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am chresti:

Goodnight melinda, 'night everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am coelacanth∅:

melinda that's what i've long despised about audis (among other things) -having driven 4 different ones (3 models) the visibility SUCKS!
and now...i drive an audi!
...but it's an OLD one, and the visibility's decent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am Little Danny:

I love you all! Thank you! See you around!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08am chresti:

Avatar 12:10am Franco Twinkie:

And the last thing we see, is a PacBell van pull out of a muddy parking lot. Oh, the pathos!
