Avatar 9:29am Daaa Stork:

Lovely, this Ha-Jo Roedelius.
Avatar 9:29am Mayuko:

@fred thanks for posting the link & I miss seeing you guys on Saturdays too!!! I haven't been listening to music much lately. Except for the brand-new Kiln release - which was really good
  9:30am WFMU listener john:

@Jeff it is your show, do what you want too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

If Ha-Jo and Scar-Jo ever got together, they'd be Har Scar JoJo.
Avatar 9:31am Mayuko:

Hello, Sem! Doug! n Mr Stork!!!
  9:31am Listener Gregory:

This Hans-Joachim is bringing me back to the New Age, which I guess is old now.
  9:33am WFMU listener john:

Question for my fellow drummer listeners, is anyone considering just saying the hell with thanksgiving and Christmas and just hibernate till spring, i am ready to do just that
Avatar 9:33am Daaa Stork:

Jans-Joachim is such a common name in Germany, and nearly everyone with that moniker calls himself Hajo (pronounced: High-O - think Ed McMahon)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am listener james from westwood:

Good morning, Mayuko!!
Avatar 9:34am Mayuko:

james!!! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jeff Golick:

Super to see you, @Mx. Granny! Welcome.
  9:38am Listener Gregory:

@Daaa Stork, or is it "High-o" in this case?
Avatar 9:38am Daaa Stork:

Im with you, WFMU Listener John. Even if I wasn't pinned down here in Germany, I say STAY PUT, PLEASE!! Everybody who can - just write off the rest of the year. Maybe Thankgiving in July? Christmas in August?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Artie:

I am calmed. Good morning, Outsies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, shut it all down. But also provide relief to sustain those shut down and out of work.
Avatar 9:41am Daaa Stork:

Listener Greg: HIGH-OOOOOO! And if going the full McMahon, everytime Jeff tells a joke I'lll go: "YUH-huh!!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Mx. Granny (e/em):

i'm gonna sit right here, quite contentedly listening to Windy & Carl. Hollerdaze don't phase me—i got WFMU!
  9:42am WFMU listener john:

Hey granny
@Stork i have a feeling the state if New Jersey where i live is going to spring a major shutdown on us before long
Avatar 9:42am TDK60:

Stork, I've always been a bit mystified by the last names Rodelius and Moebius (of Harmonia, etc.) I guessed they were made-up names. But I'm wrong? Stork, are German names ending in 'ius' common?
Avatar 9:42am Daaa Stork:

This Hamase is beautifully Reich-ian.
Avatar 9:43am TDK60:

Hi Granny. / "Thanksgiving"? What's that? hee..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Jeff Golick:

@Aaaaaaartiiiiieeeeeeeeee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Mx. Granny (e/em):

WFMU listener john: howdy!
oh this Motohiko Hamase is marvelous
Avatar 9:45am Daaa Stork:

TDK60: oh, yes! Since German is still strongly connected with Latin, and especially here in Catholic Gerrmany, a lotta Matthius-es, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Mx. Granny (e/em):

TDK60: hey there!
i'm a grinch around this time of the year. i don't want anything to do with hollerdaze.
  9:49am DJpeterDE:

I just picked up my niece (college near me) and ferried her up airport to go home. Double masks, windows open, no hug. Sigh.
  9:49am Listener Gregory:

@Granny, you are a role model to all of us.
  9:50am WFMU listener john:

@Granny me too with being a grinch
Avatar 9:50am TDK60:

Storck, ah, the Germanic tribes have a Latin connection. / Granny, I'm a sourpuss when it comes to the two holidays in Nov., Dec.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Jeff Golick:

Yeah that's tough, @DJpeterDE. Not hugging loved ones is a bummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Gosh dang is this gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

(I'd hug my wife more, but it really upsets the dog, for some reason.)
  9:52am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, I like this, but is it "nude"? Not sure about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

Does your dog get jealous, too?! Our dog really freaks out when any affection is on display that is not directed at her.
Avatar 9:53am Daaa Stork:

@Granny: every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart.
  9:54am Listener Gregory:

Happy Holidays, Stork!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Jeff Golick:

The hashtag is part of the original album title, from 1988, which is odd? Predicting twitter trends?
  9:55am ?:

@Jeff Golick Thank you! Hard to believe, but 2021 will be 20 years since it premiered and hasn't really aged a whole lot (in its essence).
Avatar 9:55am Daaa Stork:

@Listener Gregory: HUMBUG!!
Swag For Life Member 9:55am zzz:

yes this motohiko hamase is so mind bending! it’s like Reich in space
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Stanley:

Balls to Christmas.
  9:56am Listener Gregory:

@Stanley, silver balls?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: yep! We're not sure if it's jealousy or if Louie interprets hugging as some kind of attack (given he's a rescue, maybe something triggering??)....
Avatar 9:56am TDK60:

..on the other hand, I do like eggnog, and green shrubbery; always need more shrubbery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Jeff Golick:

@zzz, happy to see you on this astral plane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

Nawp. My dog definitely gets jealous. It is simultaneously adorable and pathetic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Jeff Golick:

@Stanley! Cheers to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Stanley:

LG - silver, frosted balls.
Jeff - I'm with Herr Stork, on this one.
Avatar 10:00am Daaa Stork:

This newly released Arthur Russell recording is a damn miracle!! This set is killin' it!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am doctorjazz:

My dog is the same, if I hug my wife, he barks like crazy. Same if there's dancing with more than one person. And he doesn't like it if we're watching some comedy and all laughing (that prompts him to act like he needs to go out). All jealously, I'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am coelacanth∅:

good morning Jeff and DOers
  10:02am DJpeterDE:

If dogs are hierarchal generally, are these dogs passive-aggressive specifically?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am alanr:

@Jeff Golick Thank you! Hard to believe, but 2021 will be 20 years since Inside Out In The Open premiered and hasn't really aged a whole lot, but so many have passed on. (forgot to sign in on a different device!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @alanr, the messages still resonate, and it is great to have captured so many of those interviews. Marion Brown!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Mx. Granny (e/em):

i may be losing my mind, but i just heard a hint of "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
  10:05am Listener Gregory:

If you hug in front of your cat, it thinks, "Thank God I'm not involved in this repulsive scene."
  10:06am Mark R:

This Arthur Russell track is really beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Agreed, @Mark R!

Plausible on both counts, @Mx.Granny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Jeff: thanks!!! ;-D
Avatar 10:11am Daaa Stork:

EI was/is Experimental Intermedia, which is actually Phil Niblick's living room in his cramped downtown apartment - packed with cassette and reel-to-reel tapes of previous performances. Who knows how much of that stuff ever say the light of day later.
Avatar 10:11am TDK60:

WFMU DJ (now dormant) Dave Mandl's show is/was called World of Echo. Connection? I think he's still doing fill-ins now and then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am coelacanth∅:

(and then the title of another excellent show on wfmu)
Avatar 10:12am Daaa Stork:

NibLOCK not Niblick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Mx. Granny (e/em):

what a great set, i really enjoyed it, yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am fred:

@Listener Gregory: Also "As long as I get food, hug away"
Avatar 10:13am hyde:

yeah, that set was fantastic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

@TDK60
Very much a connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am coelacanth∅:

TDK yah! pretty sure on that connection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that background, @Stork! Feel free to jump in on mic next time.
Avatar 10:20am Wolfgang:

That woud be fun sometime, Jeff. imagine I would have to phone you. Don''t know if we can both get on the stream at the same time.
Avatar 10:22am DJpeterDE:

Avatar 10:23am Duh Stork:

Weird that my name flipped to Wolfgang again on the list. Still can't figger that out.
Avatar 10:25am DJpeterDE:

Would you call "The Suspended Fourth" a rondo? (with that theme coming back)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @DJpeterDE -- we're aware and trying (in slow motion) to take care of that error. It's been so long since we logged in, we're having trouble getting back in.
Avatar 10:25am Duh Stork:

Hey, just refreshied the page and my commenter name flipped to Wolfgang again. I shall call hm "Wolfgang the Default" in future. It does have a ring.
Avatar 10:26am DJpeterDE:

Jeff: understandable. It's a great service that you've kept that up on the interwebs!
  10:27am Listener Gregory:

Is this Suspended Forth or Suspended Fourth??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am doctorjazz:

This is lovely, feeling suspended indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Jeff Golick:

"Forth" [sic]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

sic viz., bro.
Avatar 10:29am DJpeterDE:

@LG thanks for that catch. Forth makes simultaneously more sense and less sense.
  10:29am Listener Gregory:

Well, I think that Destination: Out and Suspended Forth are contradictory. I'm getting mixed signals here... keep moving or hold off?
  10:30am Listener Gregory:

Totally sic, viz, cf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am WR:

I'm out, music out, we're all out. Cheers.

That's what I tried to post over an hour ago but since beginning of Nov. my posting from phone when not on WIFI is blocked.

Back home from grocery, have been enjoying the sounds. Looking now to see what pithy comments I've missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am fred:

@Stork: better "Wolfgang the Default" than "Wolfgang the Faulty"
  10:31am Listener Gregory:

@WR, more pissy comments than pithy ones, I'm afraid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Jeff Golick:

@WR, c'mon in!
Avatar 10:31am Duh Stork:

Well, Faulty is my MIDDLE name, fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Re a rondo --- that's beyond my ken.
Just don't call it a henway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Jeff Golick:

@fred/@Stork - what's the COVID situation in your respective European countries right now? It's as bad as it's ever been here in the US, from what I can gather.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

@Stork
When you originally set up your account with the WFMU Friendship Society, is it possible you used the user name Wolfgang? If so, that would always be the default name. You can change it to something else, and that other name will stay in place until you log out and then back in, or refresh the page. Then it would revert to the orig. user name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am chresti:

Morning Jeff and d' OUTies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Jeff Golick:

Yo, @chresti the bestie!
  10:36am Mark R:

In rondo form, a principal theme (sometimes called the "refrain") alternates with one or more contrasting themes, generally called "episodes", but also occasionally referred to as "digressions" or "couplets". Possible patterns in the Classical period include: ABA, ABACA, or ABACABA. These are sometimes designated "first rondo", "second rondo", and "third rondo", respectively. The first rondo is distinguished from the three-part song form principally by the fact that at least one of the themes is a song form in itself, but the difference in melodic and rhythmic content of the themes in the rondo form is usually greater than in the song form, and the accompanimental figuration in the parts of the rondo (unlike the song form) is usually contrasted. The number of themes can vary from piece to piece, and the recurring element is sometimes embellished and/or shortened in order to provide for variation. Perhaps the best-known example of rondo form is Beethoven's "Für Elise", an ABACA rondo.
Avatar 10:37am DJpeterDE:

75% of this Ballrogg album cover looks like ECM, but the left 25% makes it definitely Clean Feed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Jeff Golick:

Ha, @DJpeterDE.
And thanks for the education, @Mark!

Re Clean Feed: I'm kinda glad they are not at Bandcamp; one less thing to concern myself with.

RIMSHOT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

In that case, @TDK60, I am interested in checking out Villa-Lobos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am fred:

@Jeff: The second lockdown started almost a month ago. There will probably be a partial lift for holiday shopping to save shops, then back to lockdown after the inevitable post-holiday surge. I'm afraid many in the dance/music/theater scene will not make it through this. Nobody cares, even worse, many cheer for their demise (like yellow vest types) because they're "privileged elites". Which is so far from the way these people survive in normal times, let alone now
Avatar 10:44am DJpeterDE:

The idea that performers are "privileged" is crazy. More like "can't stop ourselves from doing this thing that doesn't pay the rent." (Although maybe the calculus changes if you have socialized medicine.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Uncle Michael:

good morning
Avatar 10:45am DJpeterDE:

Counterpoint: but Pierre Bourdieu would say that the fact that the people who enjoy those performances are well-educated bourgeois would tend to confirm the "yellow vest" perspective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @Uncle Michael!
Avatar 10:46am TDK60:

Sorry Jeff, I'm rushing round the house doing things, not paying close attention; but it reminded me of a Villa-Lobos work with small chamber group with exotic instruments, think it's called Quatuor?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @fred. The us vs. them (false) binary opposition embedded in that kind of thinking will simply ruin everything for everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Got it, @TDK60 -- thanks, will investigate!

Wonderful to see you, @Mayuko! Take care, and thanks for stopping by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am fred:

DJpeterDE: There's a little truth to that. But mostly it's the French destructive jealousy: we don't want better for ourselves as much as we want those just a peg above to suffer and be brought below us

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Jeff Golick:

!!! @Doug. (A FOFer?)
  11:16am Listener Gregory:

There's an academic version of what you describe Jeff. Assistant Professors spend years dreaming of the luxury of having tenure and not constantly worrying about losing their jobs. Then they get tenure and... nothing has changed. Only now they get phone calls saying, "Now that you've been promoted, you can serve on this committee... be a journal editor... become department chair...," i.e., new work added to your previous duties.
Anyway, congratulations on your success!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Nawp. Different publishing job.
Avatar 11:19am DJpeterDE:

@LG that's very true. Although I'm taking Jeff's "last 4 years" reference to suggest that there's another reason why we can't feel like we can ever celebrate

@DJpeter, yes, you're right. But there are always reasons not to celebrate, which I am grateful for.
Avatar 11:23am DJpeterDE:

@LG truer words
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am fred:

@LG: Sure, but the added work comes with some security, which can be handy if, say, you have a kid in college and another headed that way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Jeff Golick:

YUP. After twenty years of therapy, I can say with certainty that I have issues with (approaching discomfort with) success. (Not complaining about it, mind.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Uncle Michael:

In my professional life success always came with approaching authority and I have never aspired to be anyone's boss or manager and I made sure it never happened.
  11:28am Listener Gregory:

@Fred, having tenure is WAY better than not having it. But in my experience people are not actually happier after getting it. It's more the removal of a worry than the addition of happiness, if that makes any sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am WR:

Thanks for the Graves / Moran link doctorjazz. Glad I have two computers I can stream on. Will see if my head came keep up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am fred:

@LG: That makes total sense
Avatar 11:33am DJpeterDE:

two things: this is my favorite album cover of the day. and the bandcamp page says '“Lotta babies gonna be born from this one,” Henry and Margaret Davis Grimes playfully declared'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Jeff Golick:

I feel you, @UM.
  11:34am Dean:

UM, When you say "approaching authority" do you mean what Derrick Bell meant in his similarly titled book, Confronting Authority, namely, protesting gratuitous, unjust exercises of authority?
https://archive.org/details/confrontingautho00bell
Bell was a remarkable guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

And there he is...@Dean! (I thought the sic/viz/cf. talk earlier might've brought you out.)
  11:38am Dean:

Didn't catch that. As it so happens, I have used all three in recent days.
  11:39am Dean:

(Almost used one in my query above to UM!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Jeff Golick:

Top o the hour, Stork is handing out masterpieces. Get in/on line to snag your own! www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am doctorjazz:

@Fred, that's actually what the CDs are hung for. Our house has been a woodpecker pecking site, and we were told that scares them away (I used to review jazz for a small audiophile magazine, and got many CDs of "jazz-lite" I had no interest in that were useful now. As I tell my wife, it pays not to throw things away...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am doctorjazz:

Boy, these 3 hours have sped by...
  11:44am Dean:

doctorjazz, On my walk to coffee this morning I saw a sign posted in somebody's yard offering "discreet" clearance of hoarded property. Would you like the number?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am chresti:

I see cds dangling from fruit trees around here, doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am fred:

@doctorjazz: If she comes up with an expert who says hanging a lot of LPs would work even better, ask for a second opinion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Dean, can still walk around here, but wife might like that number...
Fred-hahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Uncle Michael:

Dean, I mean that I have an aversion to being in a position of authority.
  11:46am Listener Gregory:

Surprised to hear d'Angelo this funky.
  11:46am WFMU listener John:

@Dr jazz nit enough hours for this wonderful show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am BadBob:

Well this is pretty cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Love this Braxton!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am chresti:

Judging from photo, I'd say doc still has plenty of room in his yard for stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am doctorjazz:

Ditto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @WFMU listener John!
Yo, @BadBob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am fred:

Agreed about the Braxton
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am chresti:

Dean, do they come to LA?
  11:51am Dean:

Everybody catch the palindrome in the "Meg Nem Sa" artist's name?

Gotcha, UM. I currently work for an academic unit whose ultimate authority is a model leader in just about every way. Once during a staff meeting when somebody referred to him as "the boss," he responded, "I don't like to think of myself as a boss." It was genuine, not false humility at all.

Angelenos hoard, chresti?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

The album title link on the playlist will take you to *extensive* composition notes on this Braxton march.
  11:51am WFMU listener John:

@Jeff the other thing with the accu boards is that there are a lot of knowledgeable people on here and i do learn things, kinda like a free education
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am spodiodi:

good morning, hello and goodbye, Jeff and everyone! (slow getting out of bed this morning)
  11:53am WFMU listener John:

@Spodi howdy and have done that a time or two
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Jeff Golick:

@spodiodi! Nice to see ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am doctorjazz:

This Braxton is FABULOUS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Uncle Michael:

I've had good managers and bad managers. I'm not sure either have influenced my aversion. It's internal. I don't aspire to leadership, merely excellence.
Avatar 11:54am Duh Stork:

Now you've done it. I'm marching about.
Avatar 11:54am hyde:

thanks!
  11:55am DJpeterDE:

No! It’s Dudu time already?
Avatar 11:55am Duh Stork:

Man, the flute is killing me.
Great show, Jeff. Watch out for happiness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am listener james from westwood:

Love the ending thrill ride and the show in toto (Latin for "inside a small Kansan dog"). Thanks, Jeff!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am chresti:

Dean, yes, stuff piled up in their yards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

William Basinski, former housemate of Ridgewood Radio's silent partner Ruth Kahn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Uncle Michael:

Thank you, Jeff.
  11:57am DJpeterDE:

@dean I’m going cross eyed looking for the palindrome
  11:57am Dean:
