A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Trouble: have you seen this electoral reform art project? fakeisthenewreal.org... Choice quote: "Keep in mind that this is an art project, not a serious proposal, so take it easy with the emails about the sacred soil of Texas." This interview about it is well worth reading: www.theparisreview.org...

A little less anxiety than last week, or, is it a new anxiety about the next few months with Trump Tantrums? So confused. Comfort us with sounds, Trouble!! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Trouble:

@ Deborah:my son is taking several college classes (virtually since covid) that are overlapping with this moment quite nicely, so our meals feel like a newsroom discussion some days. I am enjoying that teaching/life crossover
  9:10am Irene:

Looking forward to a good dose of Trouble this morning! Off to a great start.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am YETI BOB:

Good morning Trouble - I'm glad to see you are featuring another great Chicago artist, Theaster Gates. He's tremendous.
Avatar 9:16am meredith:

I read about Fauci saying vaccines s/b ready for everyone by April and have a good, ugly cry. Now the sky is joining in. Am now strongly considering bailing on my 9:30 so I don't have to turn these soothing tunes down
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Handy Haversack:

karlward, that project is awesome. I would make it so right now if I had Picard-level authority.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am YETI BOB:

Theaster Gates "Rebuild Foundation" purchases vacant building in Chicago and turns them into cultural spaces. He acquired the archives of "Ebony" and "Jet" magazines as well as the record collection of legendary DJ Frankie Knuckles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am YETI BOB:

The positive impact he has had is just immense.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Trouble:

@yeti bob: LOVE theaster gates, have shown so many of his videos to my art classes. So much to talk about with his art practice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Trouble:

Theaster Gates, Minority Majority, 2002
Narrator: Gates is interested in the way materials can embody history, even in an abstract work of art. Here, he uses old fire hoses to reference police violence against peaceful protesters. He called the work Minority Majority.

  9:39am Irene:

Ha Trouble! I think you’re right about Witchcraft. Speaking of art, if you’re looking for a nice diversion in NYC I recommend going to MoMA for Félix Fénéon: The Anarchist and the Avant-Garde,
From Signac to Matisse and Beyond. He was aFrench art critic who championed the avant-garde and African art. Peter and I went yesterday. Beautiful!

Os Mulheres Negras are two white guys (Mauricio Pereira and Andre Abujanra) and their ¨band¨ is called The Black Women. I dont know where the got the name from but it might sound offensive for nowadays sensibility. I used to have a K7 tape from them when I was a kid. I wish I still had it today...

It's warm enough now to open the window for kitty. A breeze-blown kitty is a happy kitty.

Man, I wish I could get ahold of some SorosBucks right about now, surely it must be super easy to get some what with how many people've been paid off?

The Italian Job is a great movie, it used to be shown every xmas or bank holidays in the UK. Peter Collinson directed it and he was an orphan and protege of Noel Coward, who despite ill health, plays a great cameo in the film. Get Carter is my fave Michael Caine film out of the many hundreds! I love The Trip with Coogan and Brydon.

My favorite bookstore is the Seminary Co-op Bookstore near the University of Chicago - I'm a proud member. If you live in Chicago you probably already know about it.
Avatar 11:22am βrian:

@YB: Is that down near the Oriental Institute?
Avatar 11:23am βrian:

Oh, yes, that's the place I'm thinking of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am YETI BOB:

βrian: Exactly - down in Hyde Park. You can make an afternoon of it - check out the enormous statue of the Human-Headed Winged Bull (lamassu) from Palace of Sargon II, take a look at the beautiful "Robie House" designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, then check out some books at the Coop. (And if you're lucky maybe you'll bump into Barack and Michelle)

I'm not sure if some of the stuff in the Oriental Institute Museum should be returned to its rightful owners, but it sure is cool to be able to look at this stuff.
