NEVERMIND WHO'S THERE! LEMME IN! I'M OUT! I MEAN LEMME OUT I'M IN! Okay, it's Stork, and I'm confused. Again.

More lovely album art to spruce up the grey Novemberyness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Jeff Golick:

Oh, hey there, @DJpeterDE! And @Listener Robert! And m. @fred! And @Andrew Waterloo! And @TDK60! And @listener james from westwood!
Avatar 9:09am Sem:

Hello, Jeff the G, D:O-ers, and jazzbos all over.
  9:10am Listener Gregory:

I am chopped liver.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am listener james from westwood:

My iPhone 6S Plus from Apr '16 is getting very low on battery oomph. It'll survive at full charge overnight but not if I take it outside with the cell signal on.
Avatar 9:11am Stork:

We LOVE chopped liver at GTDR, Gregory! I should be chopped liver! Maybe I could get a dog to play with me.
  9:12am DJpeterDE:

Just had the immense pleasure of seeing my wife, who allows me to play D:O every Sunday morning, react to Sun Ra Perfect Man by boogie-ing down
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am fred:

@TDK60: Maybe it's the lockdown bringing pollution down a bit, but crows have come back this year to wake me up. I'm very happy about that
Avatar 9:13am Stork:

fred: are you saying they can caw you anytime?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am listener james from westwood:

I've heard some birds around my place hthis year that I don't recognize from previous years. Likewise pleased to hear new calls. Nature is healing etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Jeff Golick:

@Sem! Our stream benefactor! Welcome, fine sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE: the power of the RA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, I guess Gaia theory would suggest that this year of Covid is in some way Earth doing it's self-survival thing.
Avatar 9:18am TDK60:

Fred, thanks for the crow report.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am fred:

There are tentative plans to put back a slide in the playground in front of my building. That should bring back more crows
Avatar 9:22am TDK60:

I was comforted to find out carbon copy paper is still available at my local stationary store. I should now get a manual typewriter (for when the Gaians take over).
  9:24am Listener Gregory:

I would have thought that crows would be one of the best preserved birds as the world decays. In the winter, they are often the only bird I can find.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

Is that a subtle Birds reference, @fred?
Avatar 9:27am holland oats:

yo d:o! peeps! subtle birds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Oh....YOU. And by "you," I mean @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am fred:

@Jeff: No, what would that reference be? It's just that crows would sometimes play on the slide when there was one (sliding down and taking flight when reaching the bottom)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Jeff Golick:

Just reading my previous comment -- "who look just flew?" MOAR coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Jeff Golick:

Oh, cool, @fred. I wasn't sure...I seem to recall some birds from The Birds hanging out on a slide...? But those are gulls, aren't they.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am WR:

"Who look just flew in," I read it without a twitch. My auto correct dyslexia knew how to process.
  9:36am DJpeterDE:

In the BIrds, I believe it is crows on the jungle Jim
  9:37am Scяaps:

h’lo hey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

@WR: great warped minds, etc.... Hiya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @DJpeterDE.

And YOOOOOO, @Scraps!
Avatar 9:38am Stork:

I think they're supposed to be ravens in the Hitchcock film, though not sure if reávens inhabit the Puget Sound area, which is where I think it was shot(?) Flying without google, here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am WR:

Doug, I was listening to the stream before DO started and two songs in a row of completely different genre but in common that a dog or dog like sounds were incorporated gave me some insight or the bridge between you and the autoplay rules (algorithm is so over used).
Avatar 9:40am hyde:

after four years of driving to upstate NY weekly and seeing much roadkill: crows are the only animals smart enough to never get killed on highways
  9:40am DJpeterDE:

I can’t tell ravens from crows but my wife can discourse for hours on crows, her favorite bird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am listener james from westwood:

Hey, Scraps!!
  9:41am Listener Gregory:

When I was in college, I would walk past a large statue of Edgar Allen Poe. Sometimes there were two or three huge crows sitting on his shoulders. I would stare at them and think, "This is not really happening."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Jeff Golick:

re ravens: www.theguardian.com...
  9:44am Scяaps:

h’lo jeff h’lo james
Avatar 9:45am TDK60:

Ravens' calls are different from crows, I think.
Avatar 9:46am hyde:

I saw a thing about a colege

I saw a thing about a crow study they did at a college where they were seeing if crows remembered faces. they had one poor grad student that was harassing crows as part of the study, and the crows ended up mobbing him for the whole time he was in school.
Avatar 9:47am hyde:

after that they started having the crow harasser wear a Nixon mask
Avatar 9:47am Stork:

Mobbed by a murder of crows!!
  9:48am DJpeterDE:

This is the wife, not Peter. Pretty sure the birds in The Birds are crows not ravens. All corvids are wonderful though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am chresti:

Morning Jeff and OUTland!
  9:48am Scяaps:

There is no consistent difference between crows and ravens. Sometimes ravens are supposedly larger than crows, but even that is not consistent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...WiFis I steal @ home came back on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
...the Shruggle is Real...
Avatar 9:49am Stork:

This Kahil El'Zabar is really pretty. Do I hear a harp?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am chresti:

I agree crows are smart.
  9:50am DJpeterDE:

In Japan there are crows that have invented their own form of surfing, taking sheets of wood to the top of skyscrapers and surfing the air currents down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Mrs. @DJpeterDE!

Gooooood morning, @chresti!
And hooray for free-range wifi, and @Revolution Rabbit Nov63!
Avatar 9:50am hyde:

a crow book that i totally recommend is Ravens in Winter by Bernd heinrich
  9:51am Scяaps:

I went on copyeditor’s memory for that, but I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it confirms, for what it’s worth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

@Stork: no harp that I can see, but strings for sure.
  9:53am DJpeterDE:

Peter back online! Is this Bluiett in clarinet? Sing it!
Avatar 9:53am TDK60:

My Peterson Field Guide says ravens generally larger than crows.
Avatar 9:53am Stork:

Sounded like one of those small south american harps - but coulda been a guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Jeff Golick:

alto clarinet, yeah, @DJpeterDE!
  9:55am DJpeterDE:

Wonder if it’s an alto clarinet. Don’t think it’s bass clarinet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am doctorjazz:

Hey D.O.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @doctorjazz!
Avatar 9:57am Wolfgang:

I just tracked the mystery sound on the El'Zabar down: Tomeka Reid playing pizzicato on her cello!
  9:57am Listener Gregory:

"Matter Is Water" or vice versa?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am chresti:

The crows around here are pretty big, must be ravens.
Avatar 9:58am Sem:

You are an icon of patience, RevRab.
Avatar 9:59am Stork:

If you hear 'em say "nevermore," chresti, that's the dead giveaway.
  10:00am Listener Gregory:

Re: Sarah Davachi, the plural of "still life" (as in the paintings) is supposed to be "still lifes."
Avatar 10:03am TDK60:

I haven't been to one of those /out/ restaurants. Still mainly staying away from folks. I'm broke anyway.
  10:04am Listener Gregory:

Oh, tread on us, Jeff! We love it.
  10:04am DJpeterDE:

I am also that DJ
  10:05am Listener Gregory:

(Addition to 10:00 comment... that is, "still lifes" and not "still lives," as in the title of the song.)
Avatar 10:05am TDK60:

According to biological mapping, chresti, there are both crows and ravens in San Gabriel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am doctorjazz:

@Jeff, like the bed music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @doc, from that same wonderful Kahil El'Zabar record.
  10:14am DJpeterDE:

I wish “work” had been in Monk’s 1960s repertoire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Jeff Golick:

Does "Work" appear on any Monk records?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am doctorjazz:

Have to check it out.
  10:19am DJpeterDE:

Pretty sure he never played it again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am chresti:

Thanks TDK60, Griffith Park, too, I think.
Avatar 10:22am DJpeterDE:

Confirmed: only the 1954 Prestige trio w/ Blakey
Avatar 10:22am DJpeterDE:

Imagine what Griffin, or Coltrane, or Rouse would have WORKed out
  10:25am Listener Gregory:

Jim Baker on piano here. Does anyone know him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Jeff Golick:

Chicago cat, has played with Dave Rempis and some Vandermark projects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am doctorjazz:

I don't, LG, really digging the tune/players, though (7/8 time, for you counters out there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Artie:

A giant oak across the street has become a regular gathering place for our neighborhood crows. They make pleasant row there. Two days ago, the tenor of their calls grew far more raucous. Hearing this from inside the house I went to the porch to see the usual murder, and a lone hawk perched at the top of their oak. The crows swooped, dove, hemmed, cawed, and otherwise harassed the unwelcome hawk, who held that perch without a single acknowledgement of the crows’ bother. Eventually the crows grew tired of this and took a new tack, flying away. The hawk, perhaps bored or maybe satisfied, then also left. After a few minutes the crows reclaimed their oak and the late afternoon proceeded in the usual fashion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am coelacanth∅:

good morning Jeff and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Wow, @Artie. Like your very own matinee. Heya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Jeff Golick:

Mornin', @coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Jeff Golick:

@doc: noting your avi photo -- are you now keeping your CDs...OUTSIDE of the house?
Avatar 10:36am DJpeterDE:

i still like backbeat-Vandermark the best
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, same, @DJpeterDE. That might've been the last record the Five had with drummer Tim Mulvenna. I also like when Jeb Bishop picks up the guitar.
Avatar 10:38am DJpeterDE:

Avatar 10:39am DJpeterDE:

Curious to see what people think of "ALSE" (love sup. electric), listened through it once yesterday. I preferred the outer movements b/c I don't think Mike Watt for all his strengths held down a convincing walking bass
  10:40am Listener Gregory:

I think Vandermark has been taken for granted a bit. We are lucky to have him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

One of the hardest working people out there, for sure, @LG. Have you seen the doc, Musician, about him?
  10:42am Listener Gregory:

I haven't. Is it worth seeing? When I lived in Illinois, I had more contact with his circle, though I'm not sure I ever actually managed to hear him live.
  10:43am DJpeterDE:

Actually I’m revising my opinion, I think watch is fine, the drummer isn’t Elvinion enuf
  10:43am DJpeterDE:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @DJpeterDE, even attempting this project is kind of the height of presumptuousness.
  10:44am Listener Gregory:

The Rova electric Ascension worked quite well, in my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am doctorjazz:

@Jeff, yup, love the look (it was torture picking CDs I could sacrifice). I'm keeping with the bird theme, we have a woodpecker problem (they like our house), and a roofer told us that keeps them away (only works if they are "jazz-lite" album's...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I thought it was a really good, unadorned portrayal of the life of a (white) working musician. I saw it in a theatre where KV came on after and played a brief solo set, so that might have affected my views on the film, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am doctorjazz:

I like that ROVA as well, LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

I had zero awareness of the existence of this recording until this moment. Wows!
  10:48am DJpeterDE:

Electric Presumption is a great band name!
Avatar 10:48am TDK60:

Huh, that's Mike Watt on electric bass. If I read that right. Does sound like him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am doctorjazz:

The cover is cool (makes it a cool Cover Cover)
  10:51am Listener Gregory:

I like the idea for this project, but the result is not turning me on.
Avatar 10:51am TDK60:

I saw Watt some years ago. His band. At end of show he came to the mike, put his hands together as if in prayer and said (for a "good night") "John Coltrane" and smiled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am doctorjazz:

Killer set/show (with a Bandcamp link to almost every track, damn...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am chresti:

I like it when DJs provide a Bandcamp link.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am listener james from westwood:

Seconded on the link love!

And this show's just the ticket for a waffles-and-proofreading autumn Sunday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am listener james from westwood:

Scяaps: All the best copyeditors back up their hunches with fact checking. You're an example to us all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am doctorjazz:

I like the links, bank account, not so much...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am doctorjazz:

Heading for Brooklyn in a bit, meet my sister for coffee (maybe)
  11:03am Listener Gregory:

Avreeayl Ra had some medical issues a few years ago, and I have been wondering how he was doing. Apparently, he is back and playing well.
Avatar 11:04am DJpeterDE:

Does anyone know the gossip? What's the story behind the break between William Parker and Susie Ibarra?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Jeff Golick:

I know nothing of that break, or even that there was a break!
Avatar 11:07am Stork:

Ditto, DJpeter. I can't imagine that. What have you heard?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Jeff Golick:

Does that date back to her leaving the David S. Ware Quartet? Or more recent?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Anyway, they are together on the next tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am chresti:

  11:09am Scяaps:

Jeff, do you have Passaggio by Courvoisier, Léandre, & Ibarra? It’s great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am chresti:

Seems like ravens gurgle more than crows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

I do, @Scяaps, but you'll have to tune in to Stork's show to hear something from it: wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:12am DJpeterDE:

Ibarra was also part of IN ORDER TO SURVIVE through 1999. But apparently there's some bad blood - might have something to do with Ibarra's husband? That's all I know.
  11:12am Listener Gregory:

Hmmm, ravens sound like my brother laughing through his nose.
Avatar 11:13am Stork:

Stay tuned. It just just might pop up on the Stork Club playlist tonight ;) Speaking of which:
--see all you Susie-acs at The Club?
Avatar 11:13am DJpeterDE:

(1999 is after Ibarra left Ware)
Avatar 11:14am Stork:

Wonderful, Jeff! I don't have this album!!
Avatar 11:15am DJpeterDE:

@chresti thanks for those bird calls!

This is still my favorite Shipp Trio record.
Avatar 11:15am Stork:

Oh, I see Jeff already put up my playlist link - duh! Gee, thanks, Mr. G!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am doctorjazz:

Meet Shipp after a concert (he's a friend of a friend), very nice guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

@Stork: will have to rectify that.
  11:17am Listener Gregory:

I had a very strange Matthew Shipp experience the one time I heard him live. He was whacking at a few keys on the piano very hard. I thought, "Wouldn't it be funny if at the end of this he announced, 'That was On Green Dolphin Street.'" 10 minutes into the performance I realized... he was playing On Green Dolphin Street! I have never figured out whether that was pure coincidence, or if the opening notes rang an unconscious bell.
  11:17am Listener Gregory:

Unconscious Bell was the name of the band I never formed in high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Unconscious Bell and the Drells?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am doctorjazz:

LG, I'd guess the latter.
Avatar 11:20am DJpeterDE:

Shipp is also "from DE" -- Wilmington, Delaware, birthplace of Clifford Brown.
  11:21am Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, if so, it was the greatest call of my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Uncle Michael:

Hoo Look Floo is my K-Pop name.
  11:21am Listener Gregory:

I guess we can't push around Delaware any more.
  11:23am Scяaps:

h’lo hey Stork. I catch your show in reruns (can’t catch it live, days* are a problem mostly). I will catch it this time for sure. Cheers.

* “days” = west coast days
Avatar 11:25am DJpeterDE:

@LG haha! I thought you meant because of Brown and Shipp but then realized you had another favorite son in mind.
Avatar 11:25am Stork:

@Scraps: then we shall meet by the Old Mill Archive, hard by the babbling DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am spodiodi:

good morning, Jeff and everyone ☀️
Avatar 11:26am DJpeterDE:

Jeff is being very scrupulous again -- no Bandcamp link for this FMP record. But it is available thanks to Jeff's work!
  11:26am Scяaps:

(like =Folkloriko= by Ibarra too very much)
  11:28am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeterDE, yes, in the "also from Delaware" category will be our next president.
Of course, Delaware has always been hard to push around, because it is absolutely flat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @spodiodi!

  11:38am Listener Gregory:

Avatar 11:38am Stork:

Guten Appetit, Doc.
Avatar 11:40am DJpeterDE:

I didn't know that there was this thing called the Delmarva peninsula (DE-MD-VA) until I moved here, but I don't like it. When I am king, all states must be contiguous. Sorry, Michigan UP! (Special archipelago exception for Hawai'i.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am doctorjazz:

Thanks (be nice to see my sister and niece, she's had a rough year).
Avatar 11:41am Stork:

Great place for birding, DJpeter. My Dad used to go there.
  11:42am Scяaps:

I am in an Assisted Living Facility (i.e., a rest home) now, and you can imagine how my Alarm Meter is registering....
  11:42am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeterDE, you have my vote then. I really would like to see Rhode Island absorbed into Massachusetts and Connecticut too... or perhaps all three merged into one. Also, Staten Island should be part of New Jersey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am doctorjazz:

LG, we don't want Staten Island, sorry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Jeff Golick:

I hope they are taking all necessary precautions, @Scяaps!

@doctorj, no one wants it! But it's a step away from NJ, so you're stuck with it. When DJpeter is king, that is.
  11:45am Scяaps:

Jeff, oh yeah, they are. But it just takes one careless person.
  11:45am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeter, little known fact: Michigan was given the UP in exchange for giving up Toledo during a border dispute with Ohio. It was not happy with the deal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Jeff Golick:

I've been to Toledo. I think Michigan can be okay with that outcome.
  11:47am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, in retrospect it was not bad.

I lived in different parts of Staten Island three times. There are poor parts of SI, too. I mean, Wu Tang.

DJpeterDE, I have a friend in Princess Anne (it's Delmarvelous ;)
Avatar 11:50am Stork:

Well said, Jeff. She plays lovely melodies on the Kulintang, and tuned drums when she uses them. In any case she is a lyrical player - super-tuned in to her musical surroundings, and makes everyone else sound more profound.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am spodiodi:

Scяaps, my alarm meter is going nuts today, as we're going to be having an unknown eletrician or electricians, plus landlords descending on us today for some (mostly) necessary work (i barely slept last night worrying about it.) it only takes one careless person, like you mentioned.
Avatar 11:51am Stork:

Happy to tip ya, JG. It sure paid off!

Avatar 11:53am hyde:

ooh, i love this record. I just read that In Love With these Times book by the Flying Nun guy. It wasn't great (he's not that much of a writer) but there sure were some good stories
  11:54am Scяaps:

Oh yeah, love this song! Probably my favorite... getting along better she said, she said
Avatar 11:55am Stork:
