JJ Cale. Take him on his own, not on his perceived audience. I love that guy. The way he got back from the navy with these weird electrical skills, which he put to use building his own electronic and radio stuff. Eric Clapton was trying to appropriate that sound for years, and by his own admission, wasn't able to figure it out. It's an uncompromising sludgefest.
