Options October 31, 2020: John Schnall’s Midnight Matinee Presents: Hello, Ween
At the stroke of midnight, as Halloween begins, the Boognish Man is coming to Midnight Matinee. Hello, Ween! After 15 years in an asylum, or possibly New Hope, Gene and Dean return like a drifter in the dark to wreak havoc with their own bare hands, cover it with gas and set it on fire. It’s gonna be a long night. Plus 2 hours of something Halloween-appropriate.

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

  12:20am schnall:

I find it hard to pick a favorite Ween song. It's like picking a favorite color. Or child. Or color for a child. Or childlike color. But none of the songs referenced in the description to this show actually appear in the show, so there's that.
  12:22am Sally:

What do you mean you don't know? ;-)
Avatar 12:22am northguineahills:

this mix is somewhere b/tn Negativeland and Art of Noise.....
  12:22am JS2:

I don't know
  12:22am schnall:

Hi JS2!
  12:23am Sally:

Yeah, it reminds of listening to Over the Edge but less overtly political.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am Webhamster Henry:

I'm suitably spooked.
  12:23am JS2:

Hello, Ween!!
  12:23am stav:

Hi everyone! JON this is brilliant!
  12:23am Sookie:

Stallion III for sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am Aitch:

Don't caress the weasel
And don't fall too soon
Don't seek the blood from the panther
Don't take a trip to you soon
  12:24am schnall:

Hi stav and Henry! This is like a reunion, only with more typing.
  12:25am schnall:

Aitch, I wanted to use that song, but there wasn't anything non-lyric I could pull from it. But I really wanted to use it. So let's pretend I did and never mention it again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am Aitch:

OK. Loving the awesome sounds
  12:26am rich:

more typing? what kind of reunions do you usually find yourself attending?
  12:27am schnall:

Reunions are not my type.
  12:27am stav:

Last reunion there wasn’t a typewriter in sight
  12:27am stav:

Tiny thumb whispers we call it

  12:29am Traptographer:

This is amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am coelacanth∅:

so, is there a particular movie getting the tribute treatment this evening? (something i've never heard of...)
Avatar 12:30am Roberto:

Whoooo needs books? Who who? Who who?
  12:30am schnall:

The last reunion I attended someone passed out and her friends then dissed her, despite her being unconscious, trying to shame her. It was odd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am Scott Williams:

@schnall, always great to hear fresh Midnight Matinees! Ween + Halloween is a total bonus. Can't pick a fave song. Rich, thanks for keeping Schnall on the radio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am coelacanth∅:

that makes me consider going to a class reunion, with a recorder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am Kat in Chicago:

Some "friends." Ugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am Stevel:

schnall: Life's way to fucking short for that.
  12:33am schnall:

@Stevel yeah, that's probably why it was the last reunion I went to.
  12:34am Sally:

fuck those shamers
  12:34am stav:

I’ll love this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34am Stevel:

Sounds reasonable. Luckily, mine are all about 1,000 miles away. Considered it once or twice.
  12:37am schnall:

Remember when all phones sounded the same, with that annoying ring?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am Scott Williams:

Demon Sweat! Forgot how great this one is
  12:37am Sally:

Yeah, I love that old phone sound. The phone ringing sound reminded me of that film When Michael Calls.
  12:39am schnall:

Digging the visuals, Rich; you always find great eye candy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am Stevel:

Phones didn't stop ringing. Not if they guy calling didn't hang up. You HAD to answer.
Avatar 12:40am Mod Mokka Matti:

Whelp, I'm outie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am coelacanth∅:

but they worked. through everything - when you didn't technically own them and they were made of bakalite. survive a fire, survive being run over by a big old car...
still worked when there was a blackout
-about $6./month + long distance
  12:41am schnall:

And if someone was calling and you didn't answer no one else could call. But yeah, they worked and worked and worked. Like Michael Myers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41am chresti:

I remember having a neighbor with a constantly ringing phone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41am Stevel:

The luxury of a long, long cord.
  12:42am schnall:

Cord got all kinked up, and then you'd go to the top floor and hang the phone down and wait for it to unkink. Just like Michael Myers.
  12:42am stav:

There are visuals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42am coelacanth∅:

more than once i got in trouble for lifting the phone off the buttons for 1/2 a second to stop the ringing.
  12:43am schnall:

Stav, look up; Rich posted some really cool images from a fellow named John Kenn Mortensen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am chresti:

Of course you can always turn the ringer off.
  12:44am WFMU listener j:

Happy Halloween my fellow listeners
  12:44am schnall:

Spinal Meningitis got me down... love this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am coelacanth∅:

... jaws, schnall-style that is. the movie looks stupid as hell and i never desired to see it.
  12:53am Sally:

Jaws was surprisingly pretty damn scary as a kid.
  12:53am schnall:

So that's kind of a climatic bit of dialog, and it makes no sense whatsoever. "What's the boogey man?" "As a matter of fact, it was". Doesn't connect. But who needs books anyway?
  12:54am Sally:

Absurdity for absurd times...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55am Aitch:

A delightful song about nipples
  12:56am schnall:

As opposed to a dirgelike, oppressive song about nipples?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am Aitch:

Quite so
  12:56am rich:

that sounds like a challenge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am Stevel:

The sadness of the nipples. (Unheard)
  12:57am schnall:

I can hear Klaus Nomi intoning "Nipplessss. Nipplessss"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am Stevel:

We must bring him back to life. This is the film we've been waiting for!
  12:58am JS2:

jolly good show
  12:58am Sally:

Is that Vincent Price as Dr. Phibes I hear?
  12:58am schnall:

Some jolly good collaborators to thank. Yep, that's Vincent...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59am Stevel:

I was in an elevator with Vincent Price. Very tall man.

it actually made me realize that there's no music in the whole movie outside of the 1st person murder shots ("ch ch ch ch")

la jetée starts next friday at film forum which is a great short film to check out if you’ve never seen it (playing with fellini’s toby dammit which was part of a movie, spirits of the dead, which also included segments by roger vadim and louis malle)

thanks for listening everyone. thanks to john for providing another fine midnight matinee. thanks to the skeleton crew for manning the boards (HUZZAH! folks). this has been a fun october as far as presenting a show is concerned and i thank you all for continuing to support the station during difficult times. next week we’ll be kind of back to normal though the freeform will be mixed in with a tribute to my friend bill weber who passed away (but bill loved freeform so you won’t notice too much of a difference though i will mention why i played a song or two as there will be a reason [there usually isn’t beyond flow]). VOTE on tuesday (or before) and hopefully we can smile a little on wednesday. take care and stay safe.
