As Hallowe’en draws inexorably closer, I’d like to suggest that should the forces of darkness descend, Stan would be the sage to visit on our BMXs in order to obtain the fiery sword in his record collection that would quell the threat.

It's a real luxury being here with the time difference in Europe, makes it so much easier to tune into the shows I want to hear but I don't hear any of the early evening WFMU, it's the dark side of the moon to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am

queems - muffins
Avatar 5:27am
VincentNifigance:

@queems RachelBoBachel asked me this; we don’t really eat them that much, my familiarity with them comes from American TV/films. I might have only encountered one in a McDonald’s ‘breakfast’. Maybe it’s a Northern thing that we don’t have them so much...

Groovy Friday to you all

Confusing as we also call the cake-y type, muffins, too. Vince, I eat them every week with poached eggs.

@pigpen! Hi. Do you eat ‘English’ muffins down there in Sussex?!

Well I eat lots of them, and they’re just called muffins.

We eat Barm Cakes. Maybe they’re muffins... we’re clearly just contrary up here.
  5:30am
pigpen in sussex England:

@vincentN we do, sometimes with marmalade and sometimes with cream cheese
  5:30am
David in London:

It’s akin to when I asked a Dane whether his countrymen also called them ‘Danish pastries’, and once he’d figured out what I meant, he exclaimed “Ah, we call them Vienna cakes!”
Avatar 5:31am
VincentNifigance:

@DavidInLondon The ever shifting mystery!

Vincent, 19am seems the appropriate time to eat Danish pastries then.

@nulsh.. TONS of swearing this week.. IT probs and a warehouse balls up yesterday :-(((

Savoury muffins are terrifc, nice and plain and go well with anything. Cheese and jam, mmm

@Dave I moved temporarily to Paris, we've just started our lockdown (will continue probably till Christmas) but I have the Seine to walk by in our daily 60 mins dose of 'plein air'. Yesterday was mad, so many people in the galleries/museums, my local library was totally rammed with locals, I took out 17 books, quite excited to get stuck in to slower calmer rhythms.

Turkey in Portuguese is 'Peru'!
I think guinae pig in French is literally "India pig"
  5:36am

Pasc, I saw the footage of last night’s traffic jams in Paris. Man, it was unreal, absolute choking gridlock for miles.
Best of luck for the next bit - I think the U.K. might not be too far behind.
Avatar 5:36am

Stanley, been a long time since I had a Buttery! I do like them. Like a heavy croissant - and yer' right about salty!
Avatar 5:36am

Wikipedia says we call "English muffins" just "muffins" here, but I've never seen them on sale anywhere.

Yeah I have to say the UK must be heading for it as well I'm sorry to say.
*Turkey above is in the food, not country of course
  5:38am

Stanley / Nulsh. Man, I need to try an Aberdeen Buttery for my culinary education. Send a few down in the post please!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39am
Stanley:

Despite homogenisation with food, it's still nice to see local favourites still abound. Barm cakes - they're new on me, too. Now, when I lived in Buckinghamshire we had a thing called a 'lardy cake'. God knows the calories in that thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39am

I was brought up on lard.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54am
Kevin-san:

Odd, I have no recollection of Lardy Cakes from my time in Bucks. Found this online, they sound delish: As reported by the author Elizabeth David, a Hampshire cookbook advises that the cake be turned upside down after baking "so the lard can soak through."
  Swag For Life Member 5:55am

Thanks, Stan & Crew! Be well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56am
