Buskers and talkers

It's kind of a state-of-mind thing, fred. These dance marathons were dance-or-get-off-the-dance-floor affairs, so....

Avatar 12:34pm Der Storkenweiser:

Jim O'Rourke is a natch to produce Stereolab, Barry P - this is an every-song kinda album. One of their peaks.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Doug Schulkind:

Love Shoes, a very extremely well-kept secret.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm fred:

@Barry P: Actually it's a joke based on a autocorrect fail for "live shows", and Doug's frequent jokes about his first band in high school. I don't want you to be the butt of an insider joke that was never meant to be mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Barry P.:

Stork, yes..for me this is the album when their more emotional songwriting style, technical proficiency, and pristine production all came together.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm chresti:

Hope you have non-slip appliques on your shower floor, Stork.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:38pm doctorjazz:

Barry P-it started on the D.O. board this morning, when I posted (one of many auto correct) typo Love Shoes in a discussion on missing Live Shows... It took on a life of it's own from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Barry P.:

No problem, Fred, I accidentally found some red pumps I really like!

Avatar 12:51pm Der Storkenweiser:

Thank everyone of you-all the Club for your pledges and your camaraderie every goddam Sunday. The Hellraiser was really truly life-affirming.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm adamdoesit:

@BadBob: To be clear, I don't think WKCR should be replaced, either! Early in the pandemic, the regular jazz djs were making heroic efforts to broadcast live from the studio. Then the university shut the campus down, radio station included. They kept broadcasting, but Schaapless and pre-recorded only. That kind of took the wind out of it for me. I look forward to their resumption of live broadcasting. Meanwhile double-props to everyone at WFMU for staying independent and on the air.
Avatar 12:52pm Der Storkenweiser:

And yes, Sem. An oversize load of thanks, dropped in your driveway. We are your happy adoptees.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar 1:01pm Der Storkenweiser:

Ike, We Like!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Storkeleh, been called a know it all in much worse ways.

Got much of my music education on WKCR. I can see how they could be covered by the pandemic. They're mostly students (purchasing home broadcasting gear would be expensive for them). And the last I heard, Schapp was pretty ill.
Avatar 1:09pm Der Storkenweiser:

I meant that with all affection and respect, doctorjazz! You and so many others make this already wonderful gig a weekly trip to the planet Ecstatica. I'm so sorry to hear that Phil Schapp is ill. That guy is a treasure, for all his little faults. Is it Covid?
Avatar 1:14pm Der Storkenweiser:

I demand to know more about Love Shoes. Are there tapes? will they play a reunion concert live at the Stork Club? Are there publicity photos?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm BadBob:

I expect columbia and its great radio station will resurface relatively unharmed... unfortunately the small, independent and IMO tge best bussinesses are at a huge disadvantage in the whole mess
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm doctorjazz:

I know, Storkeleh, much appreciated.
Schapp has been battling cancer for the past 2 years or so, don't know the current status. He was a big part of my jazz education.

Just came back inside to eat a bit of lunch. Enjoyed the last 15 min of the show. Now outside to the unending leaves!
Avatar 1:19pm Listener Gregory:

P.S. I listen to the classical shows on WKCR most mornings, and they seem quite good to me. They're pre-recorded, but you can't much tell.
I believe Phil Schaap has lymphoma, so his winning the NEA Jazz Master award is none too soon.

Avatar 1:22pm Der Storkenweiser:

Damn L Gregory. So very sorry to hear it. I've seen Schaap in a number of his documentaries and he's always poised and animated in them - and knowledgeable, hoo-boy.
  1:25pm Irene:

Since our plans for a walk in Central Park are scrapped, these tunes are perfect for our rainy Sunday afternoon.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Doug Schulkind:

I had not heard that about Phil Schaap.
Avatar 1:26pm Der Storkenweiser:

Irene!! Amazing, I thought of you 3 seconds ago, and there you are!! More sunny music on the way!
  1:27pm Irene:

I’m not a fan of Schaap, but I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:30pm fred:

@Der Storkenweiser: From what I heard, one of the issues is that Love Shoes featured Andy Breckman on keytar, so pictures are worth a lot
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm adamdoesit:

The last time I heard Professor Schaap on the air was, I think, in late March, or early April. He'd been coming in to do "Traditions in Swing" live on Saturday evenings, with assurances that he was as safe in the studio as he would be at home. (Sharif Abdus-Salaam and Sid Gribbets had been coming in as well.) There was something really moving about his observance of the tradition of Traditions in Swing during the time of COVID that, in my mind, connected with that music's perseverance through suffering. Then the campus shut down, and his voice was gone. He didn't seem to be recording shows from home. (I hope this was obstinance, rather than illness.) He more or less sat out their Charlie Parker centennial broadcast, a weeklong holiday that he more or less created. The absence from it of his voice was, and will be, irreplacable.

@spodiodi @12:11. Thank you.

I had noticed Friday & Saturday some folks used Halloween pics, recent or when they were kids. I thought, what do I got, and there it is.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Irene Trudel:

Very cool, WR!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Irene Trudel:

Shabaka Hutchins is a force of nature! I engineered a session with him for Soundcheck, and have seen him play a few times. Hutchins' other ensembles called Sons of Kemet and The Comet is Coming are worth checking out.

Best fake crying vocal! Love Os Mutantes!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:42pm coelacanth∅:

damn, the last time i hard Phil Schaap on live radio was c.2001, before i moved out of range. i listened to him a lot though, especially late 80s>late 90s.
i recorded some specials on cassette, including at least 10 full tapes of a week-long(?) Billie Holiday tribute.
i sure hope he recovers.
Avatar 1:44pm Der Storkenweiser:

I think Mel Blanc musta produced this track, Barry P!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:46pm coelacanth∅:

...if i'd known the www was coming it would've saved me lots of time and money!
since i made those Billie Holiday recordings i've probably listened to only 2 of them, one time each, years ago.
Avatar 1:48pm Der Storkenweiser:

Edson Machel tearin' it up on 'bone!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Irene Trudel:

This Arthur Verocal track is very Zappa-esque. Good stuff!
Avatar 1:51pm Der Storkenweiser:

Interesting take, Irene. I agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Barry P.:

Great album title, and check out the cover!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:53pm fred:

I remember getting the Billie Holiday comp on Verve in college. Marked me as a freak, but worth it
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm coelacanth∅:

i thought it might be Zappa at first too; and the Eddie Harris track reminded me of Roy Ayers.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm chresti:

Interesting album title- That is Why You're Overweight.
Avatar 1:56pm Der Storkenweiser:

Yeah, a little 70's-funk cliche (see Ohio Players), but funny.
Avatar 1:57pm Der Storkenweiser:

The Eddie Harris album cover, i meant...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm coelacanth∅:

fred, when my brother checked out in 1993 i went from a 1-Lp Billie Holiday comp to 6 albums, including a 3-Lp box -not the verve one though, which i'll guess is the best one
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm fred:

@chresti: But "It's All Right Now" is what the tennis grounds you work at is selling
Avatar 2:01pm Der Storkenweiser:

Yup, Lucky P. is playing kebs AND guitar, live to tape on this. And Ray Anderson? Fuggeddabouddit!!!
Avatar 2:03pm Listener Gregory:

Came back in for a short break and found this on Phil Schaap's Facebook page as of July 1:

I've developed a second cancer, a lymphoma, and the aggressive chemotherapy has worn me down. The prognosis is still cure and recent scans demonstrate that the treatment is doing some good.
Still, good days are few; however I'm staying with the Jazz.
Avatar 2:04pm Listener Gregory:

Wish I could get this show outside while raking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Barry P.:

This is 1956?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:04pm fred:

@coel: That Verve comp has many alternate takes. I love that now, but it's not for everyone. I hated it at first
Avatar 2:06pm Der Storkenweiser:

Barrry P: no, the album cover photo (google it, it's amazing) was taken by Gordon Parks in '56
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:06pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Gregory
Avatar 2:07pm Der Storkenweiser:

The album is from '17, or something.
Avatar 2:07pm Der Storkenweiser:

Gregory: always thought leaf-raking was overrated.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm coelacanth∅:

THIS is why you're overweight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Barry P.:

That makes more sense Stork! Yes, that's a heavy photograph.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:11pm coelacanth∅:

fred i like hearing all that. sometimes it gets tedious (like the stooges' fun house box with 14,000 similar takes of one of their musically inferior songs, tv eye)
...but sometimes i like the alternate take better than the chosen one.
Avatar 2:11pm Der Storkenweiser:

Marvin Sewell - excellent gee-tar playin!!

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:13pm WR:

I have not visited the Phil Shaap web site in a few years. There are still some broadcasts available for listening but the emphasis now seems to be to sell off his collection. Curious and a little sad.

Avatar 2:14pm Der Storkenweiser:

He could probably use the dough though, WR.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:15pm doctorjazz:

With Billie, depends which Billie you want to listen to. The Verve Billie is mostly the world weary, worn down, pained, drug addled version. Earlier recordings are lighter, smoother. Love them all, but very different experience.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Jeff Golick:

Lester on clarinet...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm adamdoesit:

Prez heard you talking about Billie.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:20pm fred:

@doctorjazz: I love 1930's Billie. Though the world weary later era hits deeper. Different, both great
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:21pm doctorjazz:

Schapp's site has been selling stuff for a long time (stay away because it's usually tempting).
Listened to his shows all the time years back. In recent years or got harder to listen. He'd play a half hour of great music, but then talk about it for an hour. His anger at young folks for not knowing about any of the artists would also come through (probably a downside of teaching at Columbia). It became difficult to stay with.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:23pm doctorjazz:

That was a metal clarinet, if I remember correctly-lovely tone he gets.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:24pm doctorjazz:

Great set, Storkeleh!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:29pm coelacanth∅:

dr.j @2.15 good point. i much prefer the very early stuff. it's PARTLY because i am far more a fan of small-group jazz (relatively) as opposed to big band...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Doug!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, Doug is the greatest, and I love being a part of the Drummer "family" that he's created.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:32pm doctorjazz:

Coel, the latter stuff is also small group, but has a very different feel, even the accompaniment.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:33pm doctorjazz:

Saw Ray Anderson maybe a year ago, with BassDrumBone in Manhattan, still terrific!

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:37pm coelacanth∅:

well, yes she did small group stuff later too. i tend to think of her as moving from small to big band because that's how the first comp i owned presented her. (it's a great little collection anyway)
Avatar 2:37pm Sem:

Hello, the Stork, Clubbers. Listening along, liking it all.
Avatar 2:38pm Der Storkenweiser:

Sem, take a bow! Simply hiya!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm fred:

DJ "shuts the fuck up" sounds like a good call. Sorry but I saw a last dance show before lockdown and the theater director made a speech before the show and it wouldn't end. I had to leave right at the end, couldn't even clap for the artists because that asshole had to be the show.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:40pm adamdoesit:

@docjazz @coelacanth For me it's Billie's 30s recordings with Lester in particular. They both have such lonesome sounds by themselves. Together, they sound *together,* in a way they maybe don't elsewhere. I credit Phil Schaap with getting me to pay attention to those sides…
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:40pm doctorjazz:

It was at a little downtown Manhattan museum, was supposed to be one set, but it went so well BassDrumBone stayed to play a second set (to my delight, but my long-suffering wife's chagrin)
Avatar 2:42pm Der Storkenweiser:

Pretty insufferable, fred Bad enough when you get a long diatribe from someone playing the music - horrible when it's some event organizer.
Avatar 2:46pm Linda Lee:

just popping in again to say how much i love this soundtrack. just fantastic. almost feel i'm chasing some bad hombre in a fly sportscar as i sit on my ass at home.
Avatar 2:47pm Linda Lee:

hands up! police! you can't win, man.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:47pm doctorjazz:

I told this before, but I'll try to keep it short. I went to see Keith Jarrett at the Village Vanguard years back. Club was filled with noisy tourists who wouldn't stop talking. Jarrett sat down, played a few minutes, stopped. Did this 3 times, didn't speak. Then got up, show over. While I hate the loud, inconsiderate attendees, I was angry at him for years, wouldn't see him again. Now,. Of course, I'm sorry, bit off my nose...
Avatar 2:47pm Linda Lee:

brilliant segue, that one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm BadBob:

@gregory - you need "earmuff headphones", im sure theres a proper name for them, and you can rake away. Ive been sanding and vacuuming all day and havent missed a beat. Ive got 3ms and its only bluetooth but years ago i was hanging on a jackhammer for months in coney island and i had a pair that did fm radio and wfmu was loud and clear
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:47pm coelacanth∅:

adamdoesit i agree. but i really Love ALL her 30's stuff -with Teddy, with Benny...
the world-weary Billie sounded tired, but there's another factor of that transformation from the "innocent" and genuine young(er) Billie. i suppose it was her managers or record company said you need to keep doing that thing you do, then her beautiful idiosyncrasies became forced and cliché.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:49pm fred:

The guy is a theater director, pretty famous at that. But he has only contempt for dance, and is very fond of himself. It's just sad that I had to endure his self-love fest and couldn't show my appreciation for Kaori Ito (because of the curfew and incoming lockdown)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:49pm doctorjazz:

@Coel, her idiosyncracies DID become more pronounced, maybe overdone. But, the SOUND of that voice, man, pierces me.

Avatar 2:56pm Der Storkenweiser:

This whole Steig album is pretty acid-drenched.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:57pm fred:

It's weird because I'm a contemporary dance fan but I'm not rich at all. So I had to rush before curfew because where I live enforcement is strict. But dance is for rich people, who are immune from these constraints. I don't know how to deal with that
Avatar 2:57pm Linda Lee:

oh man! the Sylvers! actually in direct competition for best band of funky siblings back in the early 70s ~
Avatar 2:57pm Der Storkenweiser:

No, LL - if you use the Sir Storkenweiser trademark, I'm gonna have to get my beak wet on it ;)
Avatar 2:58pm Linda Lee:

of course! that's a given.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:58pm adamdoesit:

@coelacanth Yeah, everything Teddy Wison did was so classy… what's not to love? I imagine there was a lot to pull Billie down: personal demons, the record business, substance abuse, and maybe subsuming them all, the treatment visited on a unique and brilliant black woman artist who tried to follow her own lights. "If I should take the notion to jump into the ocean, ain't nobody's business if I do."
Avatar 3:00pm Der Storkenweiser:

My dad just LOVED Teddy Wilson. One of the many musical heads-ups I got from him.
