Am I the first to wish everyone a congliptious morning? Calloo callay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Jeff Golick:

You are indeed, @Listener Gregory! Hip hip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am WR:

Adding Tatas-Matoes to the shopping list.
  9:04am DJpeterDE:

Good morning. The mirror tells me I am upright but my body is unsure
Avatar 9:05am hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am WR:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Jeff Golick:

@WR! Oh yeah!
@DJpeterDE! Answering the question, "what's up?"
Avatar 9:11am holland oats:

yo d:o! peeps! fundraiser shirt swag arrived in record time this year
  9:12am DJpeterDE:

Dennis Gonzalez has apparently recorded his composition that namechecks Kondo at least 3 times, I have learned (only heard two of them)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Jeff Golick:

Sweet, @holland oats! Got my tee yesterday! Amazing!

@DJpeterDE: you will be hearing one of those presently.
Avatar 9:17am Listener Gregory:

Kondo is yet another musician I learn about only at his death.
  9:19am DJpeterDE:

My cat has joined in with the mewing on the radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Jeff Golick:

Avatar 9:26am TDK60:

Good morning Jeff and the out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE: I can only say "uncle."
  9:29am DJpeterDE:

Avatar 9:30am hyde:

what does S.L.A.P.P.Y stand for
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Sounds Like a Pretty Party, Yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Belated greetings, @hyde! I think I missed your first comment.
Avatar 9:33am hyde:

@JG i was stewing over here about the snub, let me tell you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Jeff Golick:

I could sense your rising frustration, @hyde. It's written all over your cat's face.
Avatar 9:41am hyde:

haha, that's funny because she was about the sweetest tempered cat i've ever known
  9:44am JtotheK:

Hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Jeff Golick:

HI there, @JtotheK!
Avatar 9:48am Listener Gregory:

Hmmm, I have a number of Die Like a Dog Quartet albums... so I *did* know Kondo, without knowing it! I love those albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, he's that kind of guy. So many contexts. Impossible to really pay full tribute; this is only a small part of it.
  9:52am JtotheK:

So I caved and let the record store day hype get to me ... found “Stonebone” on Discogs for the retail price. I know nothing about it other than it was a CTI album released only in Japan, with Herbie on it. Anyone heard it? Is it any good???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

I don't know it, @JtotheK! Will you report back?
  9:53am DJpeterDE:

Ditto: I am intrigued
  9:54am JtotheK:

Will report back, gladly!
  9:57am JtotheK:

Here’s the little RSD release blurb with some details.

  9:59am Martinibomb:

Good Mornin' Jeff!
  9:59am DJpeterDE:

This is very different from the version on Idle Wild
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Jeff Golick:

Hey there, @Martinibomb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @DJpeterDE, I picked the more elegiac one.
Avatar 10:02am TDK60:

Happy number 9.
  10:02am Martinibomb:

9 years! Wow Congratulations - just hitting my 2 yr in a month.
Avatar 10:08am hyde:

it's fun to imagine a time when they released McCoy Tyner 45's
Avatar 10:09am hyde:

like you could slap a quarter in your dive bar jukebox and this one would come up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @TDK60 & @Martinibomb! (And happy 2nd anniversary to you, @Mbomb. I think the second is the shellac anniversary?)
Avatar 10:12am Listener Gregory:

I wonder if they were hoping to capture a bit of the jukebox market with these singles. That was still a thing in 1965.
  10:12am Martinibomb:

if so I will only play shellac records on that day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am doctorjazz:

Hi folks!
Avatar 10:15am TDK60:

I never saw jazz 45s back then, missed them somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Hiya, @doctorjazz!
Avatar 10:16am Listener Gregory:

There was a bar in Providence, RI that had jazz on its jukebox in the 80s, but that was unusual. It's said that Coleman Hawkins's Body and Soul could be found in jukeboxes through the 50s and into the 60s.
  10:16am mauri:

hellou sunday jazz enthusiasts
  10:17am DJpeterDE:

Speaking of singles, my pet peeve is the people who enter CDs into CDDB and randomly label certain tracks as “album version”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Jeff Golick:

Hi hi, @mauri!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jeff Golick:

The only jukebox I remember fondly was the one at the Corner Bistro, West Village, early 1990s.
Avatar 10:18am Listener Gregory:

Actually, a bar near me has a "digital jukebox" with a decent jazz selection (at least, some good Miles Davis). However, it is like $1 a song, which seems outrageous to me. They don't remember country songs that tell you to put a dime in the jukebox.
Avatar 10:19am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, so this is Rahsaan on reeds?
  10:19am DJpeterDE:

I haven’t been to a dive bar in years, but always checked the jukebox when in one for the first time, all sorts of random stuff in there including jazz singles from 60s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

You can be sure they cut out this bass solo on the single version of "Fly."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

YES, @LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

The LP this cut is on is one of my all-time faves. This radio show this cut is on is one of my all-time faves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Jeff Golick:

WFMU's Matt Fiveash used to tend bar at another spot with a fab jukebox, the late, great Great Jones Cafe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff Golick:

Hey now, it's @Doug!
Avatar 10:21am TDK60:

The big ones used to have some loud volume and bass. I knew a hippy guy who ran a live music club with a jukebox filled with '50s rock/R&B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am spodiodi:

good morning, Jeff and everybody!
  10:23am DJpeterDE:

That’s three Sinatra tunes in a row, for those keeping score
Avatar 10:23am Listener Gregory:

I would drop a buck to hear this.
Avatar 10:24am hyde:

i've been to bars that had old blues 45's on the jukebox, but not jazz really
  10:25am mauri:

jeah. psst psst jahhhh.
Avatar 10:26am Listener Gregory:

The whole notion of hearing Elvin Jones on a single is mind-blowing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Jeff Golick:

Heyo, @spodiodi!
Avatar 10:29am duke:

Hi Jeff and Listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Brian in UK:

Hey, is this, like, jazz, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am doctorjazz:

60s stereo on the Trane, with Jones far right, Trane far left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Hark? A herald angel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @duke!
Can't deny it, @Brian in UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Brian in UK:

When do your clocks change. I mean timepieces; hopefully the other clocks will change in ten days and move back into the twenty first century.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Jeff Golick:

Next weekend, @Brian. We'll be synced up again on Sunday.
Avatar 10:33am TDK60:

Anyone recall those small jukeboxes at each window booth, in diners?
Avatar 10:35am hyde:

@TDK yep. there's a pizza place in Pawtucket RI that still has those
Avatar 10:35am hyde:

or they did 5 years ago, last i went
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am doctorjazz:

Silver should have gone to #1 on the charts!
Avatar 10:35am Listener Gregory:

Yes, Silver is perfect single material.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am doctorjazz:

I think I've seem those diner jukeboxes not too long ago (butt time starts to run faster)
Avatar 10:37am Listener Gregory:

Impressive that the single lists the personnel. Hi, Donald Byrd & Hank Mobley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Jeff Golick:

I think we're hearing the LP version, not the single here, despite being labeled "45 version" on my copy.
  10:39am DJpeterDE:

This is what I’m saying (45 version labels and whatnot)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

YUP. Ah, well.

Man, they must have made some BRUTAL edits to fit some of these songs on 45s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Brian in UK:

This is delightful but sounds so familiar..
  10:43am DJpeterDE:

Orrin Keepnews was brilliant to make this
Monk’s first Riverside LP.
Avatar 10:45am Listener Gregory:

Oscar Pettiford on bass. That explains it.
  10:46am mauri:

damn upright bass is hard to play. I'd love to play it but everytime I've tried its just somehow really hard and needs much more strenght of fingers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am doctorjazz:

It was unusual, but they did manage to get Like a Rolling Stone on a single.
Avatar 10:50am Listener Gregory:

Oscar Pettiford was really a force of nature, @mauri, but for some reason he is not that well known now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am chresti:

Morning Jeff and OUTies!
  10:51am rw:

Good morning! Just in time!
Avatar 10:51am TDK60:

Mauri, I played electric bass guitar in bands. I also tried to play upright (at parties). Can't do it. I'm a weakling in that dept.
  10:53am mauri:

yeah picking and slapping can be pulled off by monkeying but hell if you suddenly gotta put a whole different way to it. nope.
Avatar 10:54am TDK60:

Hola Chresti. I'd been away..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Jeff Golick:

Howdy, @chresti!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am chresti:

Hola TDK60, happy to see you, where you bean?
Avatar 10:58am TDK60:

This 45 label says it's mono-stereo; your choice
  10:58am DJpeterDE:

Ah so this is what Wayne Horvitz was after on his early records (with The President)
  10:58am Mark R:

Man I love these early McLaughlin cuts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Jeff Golick:

@Mark R!
Avatar 11:01am TDK60:

Chresti, my computer went kaput, took some weeks to arrange a new one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am spodiodi:

RIP Toshinori Kondo. That's upsetting news. Heard him at Victo with Brötzmann.

Hi there, @Dean! Thanks for the link.

Jeff, thanks; wow, from the Chambers Bros.
Avatar 11:25am DJpeterDE:

That is Chambers only credit in the Tom Lord discography

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am coelacanth∅:

(...not that i'm not confused)
Avatar 11:32am Listener Gregory:

If Wally has a sister or brother, then he is one of the Chamber Brothers, no?
Avatar 11:32am TDK60:

..well, whether or not I'm confused, the Chambers Bros. were great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am coelacanth∅:

hmm, good point Gregory

hmm, good point TDK

  11:40am mauri:

sounds like a perfect song for driving in a night time rainy city
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am doctorjazz:

Now, I:d like to have been in the bar/restaurant that had the Cybotron single in their jukebox!
Avatar 11:43am TDK60:

Thanks DJ Jeff at 11:39 AM; I suspected Wally & Lester were one.
Avatar 11:43am DJpeterDE:

Lester = Wally is an excellent fact! All official sources seem to list it as Wally. Maybe contractual? ala Charlie Chan and Buckshot LeFonque?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am chresti:

Glad the Wally, Willy, and Lester mystery was solved, good work, detectives!
Avatar 11:47am Wolfgang:

I am so there! The door is open!! Here's where the door is at:
wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:48am Listener Gregory:

I have to say that I don't feel that Wally is a proper nickname for Lester. Perhaps there's a middle name somewhere, or a jokey name applied in his youth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am chresti:

Thank you Jeff G!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am coelacanth∅:

apparently Lester, so probably Wally, has had a rough life and is in serious trouble now. (not least of which the result of columbia records scumbags' thieving ways)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Jeff!
  11:56am Dean:

Wikipedia sorted out the confusion, too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_Up_with_It

The Brothers' last Columbia album was 1971, so maybe it was contractual, as per DJpeterDE?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Jeff Golick:

The pleasure was mine, @chresti, & @doc! Thanks for being here.

Thanks Jeff. I was playing Gregory Isaacs 'Personal Secretary' the other day and when he sings Aha Aha I was reminded of Alan Partridge and thence you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, Jeff. That was singularly pleasurable!
