Avatar 3:09pm Honeybear:

BTW if you to go Earwax you can count on a fine selection of "grandpa" stereo components like those shown on the flyer pretty much any day you visit - and in good working shape, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm mariano:

Let's all can-can! Hey Fabio, Crew, folks. David, Handy, and Mr. Pumpy are here, I see -- quick, someone call Interpol!

  3:20pm David in London:

ami ad, hello.
Who won Handy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm mariano:

Better than juicing squirrels and fighting limes at least.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Handy Haversack:

There are no winners in this war, David. Well, except maybe the squirrel.

Mariano, *is* it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Mr. Pumpy:

Avatar 3:43pm Honeybear:

fabio inspires me to fail - better or worse, but nonetheless to be prepared to fail - each and every day
  3:45pm Nick volunteer chef:

@phil - it’s not handmade, machines press it, but it’s uncut and delicious!
  3:48pm Cliff (not in London):

So I was sitting in a coffee shop and reading a book about stone age star temples (Star.Ships by Gordon White) and the song titles in the last set were all semi-relevant (even Mr. Giant Man, the temple has huge T-shaped pillars that represent people)... a nice coincidence to start my day!
  3:48pm wfmu listener phillip:

yes yes I know it's not made by hand. but it's like homemade pasta sauce. omg! I bet it tasted delicious.
Avatar 3:48pm Honeybear:

@Nick - I still think back occasionally on the one time I got to experience your culinary offerings, a few years back
  3:49pm wfmu listener phillip:

italians hold olive oil in high reguard! like garlic and asparagus.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The Seminefrious Tubloidel Buttnoids have left the building.
Avatar 3:50pm βrian:

Today's show is nice and moist.
Avatar 3:51pm Honeybear:

most store-bought olive oil is crap (or more specifically: unreliably sourced). often times not even pure olive oil. so if you at least know (or have some degree of assurance in) the source - homemade or otherwise - you're already ahead of the game
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm mrdonutsu:

Any Horse Lords fans here - they just put their Tusk set (which Scott Williams played last week) up on YouTube.
  3:52pm wfmu listener phillip:

olive oil when I have it I put it on near everything. its 100% good fat. healthy
  3:53pm Miss G:

hmm, I just realized that I have some ollve oil from Greece. I am going to dip some bread in it right now, thanks all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Mr. Pumpy:

@mrdonutsu...thanks! Big fan...and that set blew me away.
Avatar 3:53pm βrian:

I've been buying Corto olive oil, which I think was analyzed by UC Davis and given a pass. I don't like that it's in bags, though. Damn phthalates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm steveo:

Turned on the radio, it was the middle of the Waterman. It was fun to try and remember what day it was based on what I was hearing. It is Wednesday.
  3:54pm wfmu listener phillip:

olive oil makes anything like rice or potato or pasta taste delicious
Avatar 3:54pm Honeybear:

I happened to have put out a simple snack of bread, hummus + olive oil at the start of the show - it's a regular afternoon thing for me
Avatar 3:55pm βrian:

And it helps you to wake up oily in the morning!
  3:55pm David in London:

Yeah, that Horse Lords set destroyed the stable. It was incredible.
Cliff, you’re not in Prague are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm steveo:

Correction. It is not Wednesday.
  3:55pm wfmu listener phillip:

my parents use to buy GOYA EXTRA VIRGIN. but it's too expensive. the supermarket has a sale on filippo berio. 50 ounces for 10 dollars
Avatar 3:56pm βrian:

I heard GOYA had turned orange.
  3:57pm Cliff (not in London):

Not anymore David, I moved back to the US a couple years ago, I'm working the graveyard shift at the post office nowadays
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Mr. Pumpy:

I'm working the postal shift at the graveyard. Slow as hell.
Avatar 3:58pm Honeybear:

most store-bought hummus is crap (or at least "lacking") too. really, it's gotta be eaten within 2-3 days of production, max. so anything put out there with a longer shelf life in mind is going to taste a bit... funky (in the wrong way)
  3:59pm wfmu listener phillip:

$30 dollars for a 50 ounce bottle. I could never afford that anymore.
  4:00pm David in London:

Cliff, at FoFo’s request, I had the pleasure of playing the role of you in the rerun of the Institutionalised episode of Ken’s Show in the spring.
  4:00pm Nick volunteer chef:

It took me over 20 years to find a reputable shipping company who can move the oil from crete to Athens to Nyc without f’n with it!! It’s a tough business
  4:01pm wfmu listener phillip:

my grandparents back in the 1900s had a one acre farm in sicily they grew olives and asparagus.
Avatar 4:01pm βrian:

The 3-liter box is $75. Ouch.
  4:02pm Cliff (not in London):

A return letter came through one time from a life insurance company, on the envelope it said "Finally, life insurance you can really afford!" and underneath someone wrote "TOO LATE HE'S DEAD"
Avatar 4:04pm Honeybear:

I'm far from rich - but I find I just can't eat too much from stuff that's not a certain baseline quality-wise. It messes up my concentration / well-being / general ability to orchestrate my life (so I can at least earn more money, among other things).
  4:05pm wfmu listener phillip:

I would cook with olive oil but it's just to expensive to use it every day.
  4:05pm Cliff (not in London):

Haha David, I heard about that, too bad I'm asleep while Ken's show is on nowadays :/ (also I go for margaritas instead of vodka & coke, the times have changed)
Avatar 4:06pm ottovonbqe:

I know those bridges well fabio!
Avatar 4:06pm Honeybear:

And as a general rule - the better quality of base ingredients - the less you need (to feel you've gotten some core nutrients at least). A handful of market greens (which you can get very reasonably priced from farmers' markets usually) being almost always way better than a bag of trucked-in, store-bought spinach, etc.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Ike:

I love those lights! I've heard the AM radio traffic people pronounce it "Kos - KYOOS - ko". Is that right?
  4:08pm wfmu listener phillip:

sorry @fabio will be watching the giants eagles football game.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm mariano:

ami: About to tuck in to some Vietnamese food, all is well with the world for these few minutes.
  4:10pm David in London:

Cliff, it was pretty funny. And it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance now. FoFo and I actually met up for a drink in July, as he lives quite near me. It was a hoot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Ooh. What did you get, Mariano?
  4:11pm ami ad:

@mariano:Super,good food.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Carmichael:

Keep an eye on those ballots, Cliff.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I've been enjoying the sounds of your car's exhaust on the Inflatable Squirrel Carcass show mic breaks this month, Fabio.
  4:15pm wfmu listener phillip:

sorry. will not be watching the debate tonight with the giant orange & fire marshal bill from in living color
Avatar 4:15pm βrian:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Ike:

@PR1920, cool, I'm not too far from there. That new Sahadi's location over there is weird, but they have good olives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm mariano:

timFC: 3 bao buns: brisket, fried shrimp, and fried oyster with bacon. It's not traditional Vietnamese, I know. There have been lots of Vietnamese here in New Orleans since the 70s, so Vietnamese and Creole cuisines have been having all sorts of adulterous dalliances for almost half a century, and the result has been amazing (in my opinion). Vietnamese cuisine has become the latest chapter in the ongoing history of Creole cuisine.
Avatar 🎸 4:36pm Bas NL:

Ohw, goodie goodie @ami ad! I'm just working on fixing some vintage (over 40 years old) Moog gear here.. ;)
  4:37pm Miss G:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:42pm PaulRobeson1920:

Yeah! Hooray for Citizenship!
Avatar 4:42pm Honeybear:

Most regional cuisines are highly adulterous, to one degree or another - sometimes the adultery happened way back in the past, far beyond the reach of anyone's ancestral memory
  4:43pm Miss G:

I early voted in person yesterday and went in, out zoom zap and no one threatened me and one lady had pom poms and it was a party! But, other polling places may differ. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm mariano:

Carmichael: Creole, to be precise. Related to Cajun but distinct. NOLA/SE LA in general is Creole, SW LA is Cajun (they were historically two distinct populations, with Cajuns being originally from Canada). But I'd guess that there is Cajun-Vietnamese in those parts, never had it though.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Handy Haversack:

I'm back! Are we still in *this* solar system? I guess that's cool.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Handy Haversack:

Mariano (4:34), what are the vegetarian options like?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Threemoons:

Heyo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm mariano:

Ike: Do it, man! Be baptized and reborn in the waters of the Mississippi and the bayous! Well, figuratively. You wouldn't want to get in the real Mississip' and the bayous have lots of alligators this year. Like friggin' "Jurassic Park" over here.

Handy: Surprisingly good, actually. NO's always been a progressive-minded town (um, except for you know, everything up till the 1960s) with lots of artists and students and such, so there's quite a few vegetarians and vegans. Green Goddess seems to be the Antoine's of veg/vegan cuisine here.
Avatar 5:22pm βrian:

  5:22pm wfmu listener phillip:

omg:( just 40 min left. perfect perfect show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:23pm PaulRobeson1920:

“THE OFFICIAL Riko once asked Nansen to explain to him the old problem of the goose in the bottle. “If a man puts a gosling into the bottle,” he said “and feeds the gosling through the bottle-neck until it grows and grows and becomes a goose, and then there just is no more room inside the bottle, how can the man get it out without killing the goose, or breaking the bottle?”

“Riko!” shouted Nansen, and gave a great clap with his hands.
“YES, master,” said the official with a start.
“See!” said Nansen “the goose is out!”
Avatar 5:24pm Honeybear:

NO is a very special, and captivating place. Almost like it belongs in a different country. People who live there just seem to have a whole different set of priorities (compared to any major city in the US I know of)
  5:24pm ami ad:

@Handy: a new broccoli spot opened up in Ft. Greene the other day.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Handy Haversack:

Can they do cauliflower, too, ami ad, or is it a fixed deal?

Mariano, I kind of specifically meant with the Vietnamese/Creole combo -- are there options?
  5:26pm ami ad:

Only broccoli,5 options.
  5:26pm Miss G:

mariano, did you ever read the memoir by Bliss Broyard, daughter of Anatole Broyard (Kafka Was the Rage?) I learned so much about NO there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm tim from champaign (now washington):

  5:28pm David in London:

Mariano, once we can travel again you’d better get that gumbo pot on the go...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Handy Haversack:

Well -- I mean, I often think to myself when chopping vegetables, "no one's ever said 'there's too *much* broccoli in this'!"

@Handy:You always have great ideas, maybe a cauliflower joint is what GP needs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm mariano:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm YETI BOB:

@mariano: Last time I was in New Orleans (which was the last time I was anywhere but home, back in January) I had some New Orleans Vietnamese cuisine - it was fabulous! And of course Vietnamese food is partly influenced by the years of French occupation, so things sort of go full-circle there.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Carmichael:

Last time is was in NO was Mardi Gras 1980.

Food - like music - is based on adapting and modifying things that came before & things that come from other cultures. Almost nothing is 100% original or culturally "pure". If you made music or food that didn't contain any ideas from previously existing music or food, people wouldn't be able to make any sense out of it at all & wouldn't find it very enjoyable (viz: some of the artists featured on this very show)
Avatar 5:49pm Honeybear:

It's a sad fact that many countries only have interesting food because of either their incredibly viololent colonial past and/or exploitive intake of "guest workers"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:49pm PaulRobeson1920:

Ummm
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:51pm PaulRobeson1920:

@Honeybear - - Life is interesting and nuanced and i’m wondering, do you know who Paul Robeson is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm YETI BOB:

even most experimental music exists within a tradition and shows certain influences .... it's just really hard to avoid it
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:52pm PaulRobeson1920:

Building on the music that came before sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm mariano:

YETI BOB: Yeah, I think the Vietnamese who first came here chose it deliberately. Very similar climates (hot, humid, watery/swampy), and as you mentioned, the French influence. Catholicism too, since most of the original immigrants were devoutly Catholic South Vietnamese refugees. Carm: we might have crossed paths then! Honeybear: my pleasure, come put on a few pounds!

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:56pm dale:

some of those sounds were black magic just to be clear.
Avatar 5:56pm Honeybear:

@PR20 - sure do - did I just unintentionally quote him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I didn't expect to hear Ice Cube's Staple Singers Good Day but that's very cool.
  5:56pm Miss G:

Fabio thanks for some great sets today [ha, of course I would like something called "(More) Favourite Fairytales For Juvenile Delinquents"]
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Fabio. Much failure today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Ice Cube was probably inspired by the True Adventures of Fabio for this song. Thanks Fabio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm mariano:

Thanks Fabio and Crew, take care y'all!
Avatar 5:57pm Honeybear:

agreed - in all the right places
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:57pm chris:

Fabio didn't have to use his AK. thanks, Fabio.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:58pm mrdonutsu:

Nuh uh Ice. SuperSonics FTW, always.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Ignatatus666:

@Honeybear it’s more annoying then scratching a blackboard. Noise like tnat sends me to the archives. Can’t stand it. Nothing enjoyable.
Avatar 5:58pm Mister Dobalina:

Today was a good afternoon, from 3-6pm.
  5:59pm wfmu listener phillip:

wow it's over. that sucks
Avatar 6:01pm Honeybear:

@Ignatatus - so it's like rubbing styrofoam for you then -- fair enough, life is nuanced, shall we say. There's plenty of stuff that some DJs play that I just can't figure out (or see why they find it all interesting). Fabio's is basically never in that category for me, fortunately
Avatar 6:02pm Honeybear:

Even when it sounds like rubbing styrofoam :)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Handy Haversack:

Shoot, thanks, Fabio and Skeletons! Be well, all!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm PaulRobeson1920:

Good stuff! Thanks Fabio and Skeltons! Be well, all!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm chresti:
