"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Handy Haversack:

We're scalene the walls, YB!

Oof, Doug, I hear you, man. What times to be alive. Looking out at the gray and thinking of months of doing the same thing ...
Avatar 9:12am John Allen:

exclusive to this program jake
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am PortsmouthJay:

Jake, that's his opener every week! Right, JA?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am YETI BOB:

some weeks when we're extra-lucky we hear "Wake Up Little Suzie" by Neil Rolnick, which drives some of us crazy. "Dirty" is much better opener.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am PortsmouthJay:

Agree, YETI!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug in JC:

@yeti bob I admit, I set an alarm for when to turn the radio back on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am David (in London):

Yeah, my Aggrometer hasn't registered a single NRu for weeks now.
Avatar 9:15am Cp304:

@yeti bob Acapella version

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am luka:

did i want to tear my ears off my head the first few times i heard it? yes. but let it wash over you. be reborn.
  9:17am ami ad:

Yea,I was worried for a while when little suzy was off the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am YETI BOB:

I truly appreciate Neil Rolnick's artistry but I never want to hear that track again! :)
Avatar 9:19am John Allen:

yeti, did you get the 12"?
Avatar 9:23am Mike W:

I am happy to be here
as anywhere
but here seems nice
Avatar 9:26am John Allen:

Mike W happy yr here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Handy Haversack:

One has to get 9:42 with the Rolnick. It puts some Tuesday into Friday, but isn't that JAZZ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Ken From Hyde Park:

JA plays LZ!
  9:26am Colleen:

Soooo happy to hear this right now....
Avatar 9:26am John Allen:

handy, that gets you co-host status. get us some $$
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Is this from an extended version of Houses of the Holy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Ken From Hyde Park:

Correction: JA plays LZ - RP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Handy Haversack:

Nice -- now if you could remove LZ vocals and lyrics from my memory entirely, we'd really be cooking with gas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am luka:

no quarter, no vocals, no service.
  9:27am winston legthigh:

this guitar sounds a little different than the house of holy album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am luka:

or no problem. depending on your perspective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am PaulRobeson1920:

Warm greetings ya’ll! ....No Quarter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am YETI BOB:

LZ - RP = Actually a good band
Avatar 9:29am Cp304:

im trying to think of the beach boys song ToTom mixed with this..
Avatar 9:29am Rich in Bristol:

I saw a sign in a shop window last week that said: "No shirt, no trousers, no shoes, no mask – No Service."
Avatar 9:30am PKNY:

I'm missing JPJ's piano lines on this version of "No Quarter"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Mark Hurst:

I like this version a lot better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Handy Haversack:

Please pledge to keep LZ RP-free forever: pledge.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Handy Haversack:

(How'm I doing, JA?)

Hey, Mark! dkg came over and hung out in the yard last night. We are all excited for Monday!
Avatar 9:34am John Allen:

nice Handy, we're just getting started
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

So much classic rock snobbery here. I listened to Styx the other day and I LIKED IT!! NYAH!! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am karlward:

I swear, if I miss another Plant-less Led Zeppelin song, I will go on with my life as if that never happened
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Handy Haversack:

Sure, I would always pick up Styx!
Avatar 9:36am Heidee:

This is nice. I can hear the falling leaves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am David (in London):

Woods, I'm with you. Rock on brother!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am YETI BOB:

@Woods: I like plenty of classic rock, I just have never appreciated Plant's vocal stylings. They could have been such a good band with a different singer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am melinda:

@Woods hahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Handy Haversack:

Not that I'm a big Tolkien fan, but Plant understood LoTR even less than Peter Jackson did.

Did the tintinnabulation of the bells eat JA?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@YETI BOB: The interesting thing is that for the most part I like what Plant has done solo much more, especially in recent years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Ike:

You're back now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am karlward:

This is happening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Handy Haversack:

Whew. Thought I was going to have to get in the game there for a minute! Now where's my clipboard?
  9:43am ami ad:

JA and the Dropouts. Lower Bed-Stuy? I was told many years ago I live in Prime Bed-Stuy.
  9:44am madison:

I was in laaraji’s apartment the other night and he has no comfy chair
  9:45am Gary:

good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@YETI BOB: Yeah, you can't help what resonates or doesn't. I have friends who are enormous fans of early Genesis and I just never could appreciate Gabriel's vocals. Still don't.
Avatar 9:46am Cp304:

off to first job (intermittent internet). have a great day all, will be listening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am YETI BOB:

Gareth Williams "Flaming Tunes" was issued on vinyl in 2012, I remember seeing it in the shops and foolishly not picking it up, it now goes for around $100. Excited for the re-re-release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Mark Hurst:

@Handy nice to hear! dkg was great. Looking forward to sharing the interview.
Avatar 9:48am John Allen:

yeah blackest ever did a pressing that sold out fast
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am rsj:

how is this so good?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am David (in London):

Charles Bullen's Lifetones side project was well worth forking out for, too, I reckon.
Swag For Life Member 9:50am wolfingham:

incredible selection here
Avatar 9:52am Malcolm:

anyone catch the nico film? i enjoyed it a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Handy Haversack:

Nico's birthday, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am David (in London):

Hey Malcolm.
Avatar 9:56am Malcolm:

hey david!
Avatar 9:56am Malcolm:

how do?
Avatar 9:57am John Allen:

yes happy birthday nico
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am David (in London):

I think this track was on the classic Beggars Banquet '£1.99' compilation of 1985. That was such a great album.

Malcolm - Time for a Hat Museum practise soon I reckon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am YETI BOB:

I recognize this tune, isnt't his called "The Orchids"? (Califone did a cover of it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am melinda:

@Yeti this sounds like a different version of Orchids
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am YETI BOB:

different recording, same song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am melinda:

right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am PaulRobeson1920:

A very Happy STINKIN BIRTHDAY to NICO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am melinda:

But Psychic TV did another that I'm more familiar with
Avatar 10:00am Malcolm:

@david Oh for sure. I'm writing a song about a trilby as we speak
Avatar 10:01am Malcolm:

@melinda the well-known version is on the dreams less sweet album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am YETI BOB:

califone version is great too
Avatar 10:03am Mike W:

I’ll never forget spending hundreds of dollars of Kinko’s money in 1990 helping a Mpls label get a two-sided cardstock insert looking right for a Dog Faced Hermans 7 they were doing
#nocharge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am melinda:

@Malcolm yeah, that's what I have on cassette.
Avatar 10:06am Malcolm:

@melinda nice thing to have! I want a physical copy but discog prices are crazy :'(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am alanr:

Wow. how weird in a good way. I was thinking about Amy Denio earlier this week and I do not recall why. I met her in the early 90s in Cleveland when she was performing with the Billy Tipton Saxophone Quartet. Excited to hear her again a zillion years later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am David (in London):

I haven't heard the Dog Faced Hermans in an age. That was really great. I can hardly believe it's almost 30 years old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am melinda:

@Malcolm I taped it from my sister's album ages ago and it's in a packing box somewhere so I'm not sure how well it's held up. Hopefully sis has the original, I should ask her.
Avatar 10:12am John Allen:

alan r, yr in the right place but the wrong time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am luka:

skylines = JAZZ. that's just the way it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Ike:

Wait, so if he doesn't reach his goal, JA is only going to play the early 70s thing, noise with a beat, the sounds of pinches, dub, and the whole folk thing from now on?
Avatar 10:20am John Allen:

no going back Ike. who knows, sometimes it's just time to move on and start a jazz trio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Handy Haversack:

Rain means Bagpipe assumes the "should anyone need me, I'll be under the DU-vet" position. Got any wake-the-dog JAZZ up in there, JA?
Avatar 10:38am John Allen:

you're right handy, it's awfully quiet in the pledge room. please make the pitch
Avatar 10:39am βrian:

Düvet seems like a likely band name. Metal, naturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am David (in London):

βrian - I see Düvet as being at that nexus of heavy Scandinavian rock and psych, a bit like Circle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Handy Haversack:

Sauna Metal.

People, JA brings many other letters and pretty much all of the notes to us. You can tell your friends you're into black-pumpkin JAZZ and make them jealous.

At the $5,000 level, JA will even get in your barn!

But all pledges accepted.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am YETI BOB:

@luka: I was thinking that the logo for the Chicago Jazz Festival (sob) had a skyline motif ... it doesn't, but it does have a really nice jazzy script font - check it out jazzinchicago.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am David (in London):

Free jazz saxers like hanging around in tunnels. Evan Parker played in the Ouseburn Victoria Tunnel in Newcastle not long ago.

Yo Coela.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am coelacanth∅:

you'd think playing this track would be enough to move the car
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am adampsyche:

YB, have you had any interaction with Chicago Ideas Week? A friend of mine ran box office and other logistics for them for years.
  10:55am Joe Mulligan:

Cloudy and raining outside but sparkling on the inside
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am YETI BOB:

Google image search for "Jazz festival logo" is fun. Some common themes: 1) The letters in JAZZ are not aligned, like they are dancing around. 2) The letters in JAZZ are different colors. 3) Script fonts - but not as many as I'd expect. 4) People cannot resist turning the "J" into a saxophone (or turning a sax into a J?). 5) No skylines. Where are all the skylines?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Yes:

cool sparkle track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am coelacanth∅:

colonel sanders is like the dark-world,

while Pharoah tries to cleanse the planet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am David (in London):

CYB - Yes, you're right! Except the Marsden Jazz Festival which seems to have a sheep as its logo. The jazziest of all farm animals after all.

@luka: By the way I wanted to thank you for recommending the Alabaster De Plume record, I finally picked up ‘To Cy & Lee ’and just love it, been playing it a lot.
@BadBob: Are you *that* Bad Bob? www.chick.com...
Avatar 11:32am John Allen:

on the playlist Badbob, first track. Dirty Shirt

Morning JA
Avatar 11:34am John Allen:

hey JM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Handy Haversack:

YB, *did they find a new dealer*?

I will click on any Chick Publications link, clearly. I wonder if their webmaster (they have one, right?) will see all the traffic coming from wfmu.org and think "it's finally working!"

Black Leaf lives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Krys O.:

I watched the 1966 Czech film The Daisies last weekend and the soundtrack made me think of your show, JA. I couldn't find any matches on the WoofMoo search though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am tim from champaign (now washington):

This is what I wish Peter Gabriel era Genesis sounded like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am David (in London):

I like the way Bad Bob looks like Jet Black from The Stranglers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Krys O.:

Already pre-clicked!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Krys O - Daisies is super great!
Avatar 11:44am John Allen:

same, Tim
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am YETI BOB:

@HH: I ordered a box of these Bad Bobs and I used to give them away as party favors. But then the Chick company just kept sending me unsolicited samples, and some of them were really offensive (anti-Semtitic, anti-Islam), I had to make them stop. I've used "Bad Bob" as an on-air DJ name (on pirate radio!)

@Handy Haversack:I see there are Quarantini t-shirts for sale out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am PortsmouthJay:

Shout out to the Downtown Music Gallery. Support 'em if you can!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am David (in London):

Jan Hammer can actually out-dance MC Hammer.
Avatar 11:45am John Allen:

what Jay says
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am tim from champaign (now washington):

Cuz MC Hammer don't have no boogie violin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Handy Haversack:

And out-jam Jan and Dean!

Nice, ami ad! Though I should probably wait until they're an FMU premium ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am tim from champaign (now washington):

Oh no! Was Jan inspired by Charlie Daniels on this song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Handy Haversack:

YB: Yeah, Chick Publications is a nightmare. But sometimes unintentionally hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am David (in London):

I think it was more likely Jack Daniel's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am karlward:

That Jan was a barn burner. I hope the barn is OK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Full Moon Boogie from the live Jeff Beck record??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am YETI BOB:

@Krys O: I don't know that film, do you recommend it? The only Czech directors I really know are Jan Švankmajer and František Vláčil (Marketa Lazarová!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am tim from champaign (now washington):

@DiL - ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am David (in London):

CYB - 'Valerie and Her Week of Wonders' is another stonewall classic of that era of Czech craziness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Krys O.:

@Yeti Bob: Yes, I recommend seeing The Daisies. It's visually stunning. The message can be a bit bludgeon-y, but it's definitely worth seeing.

TCM has been featuring films by women directors, BTW. I've DVRd a bunch to watch at my leisure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am tim from champaign (now washington):

I think JA's thrown down the Jazz Boogie Friday gauntlet. Can Bryce bring his A game?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am YETI BOB:

Thanks for the film recommendations, I'll be sure to Czech those out! (showing myself to the door now...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am tim from champaign (now washington):

Man, this is getting into chooglin' territory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Handy Haversack:

You better believe that's a chooglin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Handy Haversack:

This one is getting strung out!

(I'll be with Yeti Bob ...)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Handy Haversack:

Oh no! It's over! Pledge, people! Let's get this barn up!

("'Tis a fine barn, English, but 'tis no swimming pool.")

Great show, JA -- thanks! And thanks, Matty Bones!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm tim from champaign (now washington):

This is the best JAzz show on the WHOLE dial, not just the end of the dial!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks JA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm terminalhipness:

Hey - board is still open? My job violated "no meeting Fridays". Have to catch this in the archives!
