Feldpausch - Soloha!
Avatar 11:12am worldsworstrecords:

Not musch I'm afraid, Mr F... I thought I'd play it straight today! However I do hope to bring you the new Mrs Miller album, and an interview with its compiler, to WWRRS soon
Avatar 11:13am solo mon:

Oh Jan uuu have quite a week next week don’t you??
Avatar 11:13am Feldpausch:

I have this turned up pretty loud, and your voice sounds h-u-g-e on these speakers
Avatar 11:13am worldsworstrecords:

is that a good or a bad thing, Feldpausch?
Avatar 11:14am solo mon:

Darryl “playing it straight” I see what you did there ;-)
Avatar 11:14am Mr Fab:

No complaints Darryl, I imagine your ears could use a vacation from all of the horribleness.
Avatar 11:16am worldsworstrecords:

lol! I thought I might save the bad Exotica for a future episode
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jan Turkenburg:

@solo, just a normal week (I hope)

Avatar 11:19am Beany:

Hello everyone. I bought a Yma Sumac CD for 10p this week. Some people have no idea...
Avatar 11:20am Beany:

Darryl. Panpipes CDs are my latest "jam"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Jan Turkenburg:

Hi MB!
Avatar 11:31am worldsworstrecords:

I shall attempt to do just that, Beany
Avatar 11:39am Beany:

I have that Latin-esque. Never played it so a big thank you.
Avatar 11:39am Mr Fab:

The Exotica Suite album has a somewhat inexplicable thatched thing attached to the front cover that I’ve referred to as a carpet sample. Could not have been cheap to manufacture.
Avatar 11:40am worldsworstrecords:

You're welcome, Beany. It's a great album
Avatar 11:41am Mr Fab:

It is Beany, a classic!
Avatar 11:41am worldsworstrecords:

It's a weird cover, that one, isn't it Mr F?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Mx. Granny (e/em):

greetings, Darryl and WFMU pals!
Avatar 11:42am worldsworstrecords:

Avatar 11:42am worldsworstrecords:

We're off to the East now for a little break
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Darryl, i see you're on the market for hammered dulcimer. I know someone who leads Grateful Dead jams with one. Dunno if any recordings are available online…
Avatar 11:44am worldsworstrecords:

ohhh... I'll have a poke around the net and see. Thanks Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Mx. Granny (e/em):

I love that instrument! such a great sound
Avatar 11:48am worldsworstrecords:

Avatar 11:55am worldsworstrecords:

Don't forget I have a WWRRS request show coming up soon... let me know your favourite bad records ASAP
  11:56am Martinibomb:

I wish I'd written down more but I feel like I heard a bunch of new 2020 contenders for WWRRS -- hopefully I'll remember a few and can request them - probably mostly horrible tv actors doing albums lol
Avatar 11:58am worldsworstrecords:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm notsoKWYET:

ooof... two of the great Les bax-to-bax lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

how thrilling to witness a music lover meeting exotica!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm notsoKWYET:

I can actually take some photos of Mondo Exotica --- they have an extensive listening list in the back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm notsoKWYET:

Love this track....
Avatar 12:06pm worldsworstrecords:

I bought the 8 CD Martin Denny set and just went mad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

i spent my sunburnt childhood drinking virgin chichis all alone by the poolside at the famous Coco Palms Resort in Kauai, so exotica was my childhood soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm notsoKWYET:

best person to go mad on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm notsoKWYET:

I'd also say that Arthur Lyman is definitely in a similar sound/class to MD
Avatar 12:07pm worldsworstrecords:

...just needs more dulcimer ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm notsoKWYET:

If you listen to Robert Maxwell he has harp.. that's close lol
Avatar 12:07pm worldsworstrecords:

I have more Arthur Lyman coming up later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm notsoKWYET:

I feel Eden Ahbez coming out way soon ;)
Avatar 12:08pm Mr Fab:

What a childhood, granny! I only spent my sunburnt childhood by the local park public pool. Avoiding the suspiciously warm areas of pool water. Were you raised in Hawaii?
Avatar 12:08pm Feldpausch:

Aloha-oyyy Ursula1K, NotsoK, Mx Granny, Martinibomb
and I wanna give a special shout-out to Henry Schluter who invented the vibraphone in 1927
Avatar 12:09pm worldsworstrecords:

big up to Henry Schluter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm notsoKWYET:

I went to the beach pretty much every day for a month (it's about a 2km bike ride from my house) --- at the end of the night, at sunset, I would put a boombox on the back of my bike and slowly bike beside the beach boardwalk with all these very calm exotica tunes... people were entranced...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm notsoKWYET:

HELLLLloooooOOOOooOOhHAaaaaa @Feldpausch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm notsoKWYET:

Woahhhh.. big choice here!
Avatar 12:11pm solo mon:

I love that dan! Usually the guys on bikes I see w boom boxes are blasting dubstep or death metal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

huzzah Henry Schulter!
Mr. Fab: my grandparents spent winters on Kauai, in "The Frank Sinatra House" at Coco Palms (location for Elvis's "Blue Hawaii." I spent many mele kalikimakas with them. My aunt and cousin lived there full time.
Avatar 12:11pm worldsworstrecords:

You approve then Dan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm notsoKWYET:

no one fills public space with good music ... I'd go to the beach and "dj" songs off spotify and people loved it... all very calm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm notsoKWYET:

This is a rare record... I lost out on it on ebay earlier but snagged his first record Lotus Land
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

some folx in this chatland know the place i more or less grew up; glamorous South Kelso, Washington, near the airport!!!
Avatar 12:12pm solo mon:

Sounds nice granny! I’ve never been to Hawaii.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm notsoKWYET:

I approve of ALL of this WWR
Avatar 12:13pm worldsworstrecords:

I've Never Been To Me, solo...
Avatar 12:13pm solo mon:

But I have been to Kelso, WA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm notsoKWYET:

Wow @Granny... re: Frank Sinartra House... I was fortunate to go to Kauai a few years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

solo mon: Hawaii is beyond "problematic." i can't even go there anymore, the socioeconomic disparity breaks my heart
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

solo mon: beaches aren't as nice in Kelso! But Skateworld was my refuge!
Avatar 12:15pm Mr Fab:

I only hear hip-hop on boomboxes. Only.

Darryl, here in SoCal - ground zero of tiki Americana - exotica records are as common and cheap as dirt. So it’s interesting to hear people discovering it anew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

solo mon: wtf were you dooing in Kelso?!?! Most people say, "oh yeah, my car broke down there"
Avatar 12:16pm worldsworstrecords:

That's worth knowing for when I visit, Mr F
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

yeah, Exotica records line the gutters
Avatar 12:17pm Feldpausch:

@notsoKWYET you're absolutely right; Public spaces are usually filled with awful music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

it's like a solidarity of misery
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm notsoKWYET:

I can deal with people playing their music that I wouldn't normally love... but get the vibe right if it's public...
Avatar 12:20pm worldsworstrecords:

I don't mind anything, so long as it hasn't been minced by autotune
Avatar 12:20pm worldsworstrecords:

I cannot listen to autotune... it sets my teeth on edge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm notsoKWYET:

Well 99% of what i hear in public is autotune
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

autotune drives my sweetie out of his mind
Avatar 12:21pm Feldpausch:

Mr Fab, a friend of mine is headed this morning to LA Tiki Marketplace
Avatar 12:21pm worldsworstrecords:

I'm not surprised, Granny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

and this is a guy who perks up when i put on Anal Cunt or some other gawdawful thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm notsoKWYET:

the newish triplet rap drives me out of my mind... Also, every band thinking they are J Dilla with the drunken drum beats... when they really aren't ...
Avatar 12:23pm Beany:

I'm not ignoring you but going about my business with your music playing around the Beany Arena. I saw the film Blue Hawaii in the cinema as a young child. Explains a lot.
The record covers are all fab.
Avatar 12:23pm Mr Fab:

I knew a guy who would play, say, Sinatra, on his phone and somehow tap into annoying subway boomboxs via bluetooth or something. Not sure how he did it, but he said it was hilarious watching these kids trying to figure out why Frankie was boomin from their box.
Avatar 12:24pm solo mon:

Lol granny actually my car did break down in Kelso once! But I had some friends that lived there and would stay sometimes and also been a long time Longview / Kelso Thrift shopper. It has always been one of the best thrifting areas known.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

somehow this album cover fails to spark up my fantasy of paradise
Avatar 12:25pm worldsworstrecords:

No problem Beany... I know you're out there ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

maybe it's just vertigo
Avatar 12:25pm worldsworstrecords:

You'd probably prefer the other side, Granny, with the sandpaper and carpet sample
Avatar 12:26pm Mr Fab:

Feld, there are still open marketplaces?! Not to mention tiki ones. Is that the one down in Garden Grove?
Avatar 12:27pm solo mon:

That has got to be the ugliest exotica album cover I have ever seen LOL
Avatar 12:28pm worldsworstrecords:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

worldsworstrecords: that reminds me of the time i spent as one of the minions adorning Caroliner Rainbow record covers with exactly such materials!
Avatar 12:28pm solo mon:

Oh the other side is much better! I approve!
Avatar 12:31pm worldsworstrecords:

Nothing says 'exotica' like a strip of hessian
Avatar 12:36pm solo mon:

@Granny - I don’t know when the last time you stepped foot in Longview but the years leading up to “the incident” The entire downtown area of Long View was thrift stores and antique malls. And still pretty cheap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm notsoKWYET:

wow.. Darryl.. This is fucking great
Avatar 12:38pm worldsworstrecords:

*blush*... coming from you Dan I take that as a HUGE compliment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

solo mon: i drove around Longview a couple of years ago—visited the Nutty Narrows Bridge (for squirrels!). It seemed about as desolate as ever. I suppose anything within an hour of Portlandia got more attractive in recent years.
Avatar 12:40pm Mr Fab:

I’m in the Island spirit here with macademia nuts in my milk that i can chew (e.g.: yogurt)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

Mr Fab! Excellent idea, i got some mac nuts in the pantry, mmm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

and this set is simply dreeeeeamy
Avatar 12:41pm worldsworstrecords:

Hubby is cooking dinner, otherwise I'd be nibbling on some nuts by now...
Avatar 12:41pm worldsworstrecords:

Glad you're enjoying it, Granny
Avatar 12:44pm solo mon:

Yah still sleepy- And I wouldn’t dare go there right now. It is dangerous to drive outside of Portland in a 90s Volvo wagon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm notsoKWYET:

Solo ... what colour was your Volvo wagon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm notsoKWYET:

We had to 280 DL blue... with the seats in the back of the wagon that looked out the back window
Avatar 12:55pm Beany:

Most of the tracks you have played today are *almost* as old as I am. Don't sound as dated ;)
Avatar 12:56pm Mr Fab:

Wow, I didn’t know that one. Janine de Waleyne was wailin!
Avatar 12:57pm worldsworstrecords:

Thanks Beany!
Avatar 12:57pm worldsworstrecords:

the other side of the Janine de Waleyne 7" is awesome, Mr F
Avatar 12:58pm solo mon:

I have a white 93 Volvo wagon! Classic brick style.
Avatar 12:59pm solo mon:

Yes the seat in the back that faces backwards! So cute.
Avatar 1:00pm worldsworstrecords:

..and we're now heading into the last hour of today's Aloha marathon
Avatar 1:04pm solo mon:

Oh whoah those two hours just went by... where does the day go?
Avatar 1:05pm worldsworstrecords:

mad, isn't it?
Avatar 1:07pm solo mon:

Tipsy sample alert!
Avatar 1:08pm Mr F:

Darryl has lulled us into a tropical stupor. We’re all just laying on the beach, slurping mai tais. Time has lost all meaning...
Avatar 1:08pm worldsworstrecords:

make mine a Mojito
Avatar 1:10pm worldsworstrecords:

some classic WWR silliness coming up in the next section
Avatar 1:12pm Mr F:

That “aloha!” in the background sounds like solo’s ice cream truck took a detour into the jungle.
Avatar 1:13pm worldsworstrecords:

haha! I swiped it from an episode of Bob's Burgers!
Avatar 1:14pm Mr F:

I have a Chaino album that says his name is pronounced “Cha-ee-no.”
Love the ORB label design!
Avatar 1:15pm worldsworstrecords:

I had to have a short WWR break ;-)
Avatar 1:16pm Mr F:

Love this, nutty like macademias!
Avatar 1:17pm worldsworstrecords:

When I last played this song, on the WWRRS, Mr fab told me I had to play it on my Aloha show... so, here you go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

It fits in perfectly!
Avatar 1:18pm worldsworstrecords:

The next record is one of my favourite 45s of all time
Avatar 1:18pm Mr F:

Avatar 1:34pm Mr Fab:

“Voodoo Exotic Music From Polynesia And The Far East“ Ha ha, everything about that title is self-contradictory nonsense.
(Fact-Checking Exotica Titles!)
Avatar 1:37pm Ursula1000:

this Les album is tight!
Avatar 1:42pm Herk Hilligoss:

This is the stuff I love. There may be some song repeats on my episode I'm afraid...
Avatar 1:43pm worldsworstrecords:

haha! Go for it Herk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Jan Turkenburg:

I don't think that's a problem Herk :-) :-)
Avatar 1:44pm worldsworstrecords:

Sorry I won't be able to stick around for tonight's Lost media Archive, Herk, but my dinner is calling me...
Avatar 1:48pm Herk Hilligoss:

No prob, World's Worst. All the outsider music I'm playing you probably already have ;)
Avatar 1:49pm worldsworstrecords:

I shall catch the show in the archive tomorrow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Jan Turkenburg:

Delightful show, Darryl, thank you!
Avatar 1:52pm worldsworstrecords:

You're welcome Jan!
Avatar 1:53pm Mr Fab:

I hoist a mojito in your honor, Darryl.
Avatar 1:53pm BC Sterrett:

Avatar 1:54pm worldsworstrecords:
