Doug, could you repeat (in chat) the info about Amy Denio. She came into my memory earlier this week, but I do not recall exactly why. I met her in the early 90s in Cleveland, when she was performing with the Billy Tipton Saxophone Quartet, and then again for a solo performance. Always liked her music and person!

Great, now my brain is broken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am chresti:

Hi Doug and drummers!
  10:19am wendy del formaggio:

I recently found two pretty good CD comps billed as Turkish psych (which is more-or-less true) in a highly unlikely place: a used/consignment furniture store in Keene, NH!
The moral of the story: Never underestimate ANY location as a possible source of musical finds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, ken krimstein!

@alanr
Amy Denio will be live on the Drummer Stream tomorrow, 2-5pm (ET) as a guest on Music For a Free World with Dave Sewelson. His show will be here: wfmu.org...

Sam Jones on bass here with Richard "Blue" Mitchell (trumpet), Wynton Kelly (piano), Roy Brooks (drums)
  10:41am Mark R:

This Blue Mitchell is really hitting the spot on this cold, rainy day. This tune seems familiar to me, under another title, but I can't remember what or by whom. Great band!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

So glad to be spot-hitting, Mark R!
  10:42am Listener Gregory:

Frankly, I wish I had gone my whole life thinking his name was actually "Blue." Now my last illusion is gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Jeff Golick:

Props to the producer/engineers for keeping Sam Jones very audible in the mix.
  10:43am lucyinbkln:

Missing you and happy that you are filling my workroom with these wonderful sounds.
  10:43am Mark R:

Jeff, it's Sam's figure that is reminiscent of something else to me--it's driving me crazy that I can't think of it!

Isn't it "Tootie"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Pretty flaming band on this track: Don Cherry (cornet), Ed Blackwell (drums), Herbie Hancock (piano), Buster Williams (bass), Mtume (congas)

Glad you whirled over this way, Spinning Giant!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Jeff Golick:

I'm sorta surprised this Kawaida album hasn't been given a proper reissue? (If I'm reading the discogs tea leaves correctly...)

I see, too, that it was once re-released as a self-titled Herbie Hancock record!
  10:51am Listener Gregory:

Online concert this Sunday, 3-6 pm Eastern by the Bang on a Can organization. Among the relevant artists are Annie Gosfield, Tyshawn Sorey, Valgeir Surdsson, Nels Cline & Yuko Honda, and finishing with solo Bill Frisell. Free (donation requested) at marathon2020.bangonacan.org.

  10:53am Listener Gregory:

Add bassist William Parker to that Bang on a Can concert. I didn't see him at first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Oh, just a little duet between David Murray (tenor) and Bobby Bradford (cornet). That's all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Spinning Giant:

Yes yes a thousand times yes! And he is the uncle of Mtume.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

The African funk in the next set is gonna blow your doors off, grease the hinges and blow them back on.
  10:56am Mark R:

Thanks for that info, Gregory! And Bobby Bradford, yes. representing the woefully under-represented West Coast avant garde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, spodiodi! Almost missed ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I think we can just assume William Parker is there, whatever the setting.
  10:57am Mark R:

This Murray/Bradford track is really something special. I can almost feel them in the room with me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

  11:08am Listener Gregory:

Sadly must leave early today. However, I'm going to drop off my ballot, so that excuses any other misbehavior. Thanks, Doug!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Make it safely to the drop box. Godspeed.

Good morning, Bill D! Oh how every excellent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

Who shreds it shreddier on this cut, the organ or the guitar?
  11:17am Funky16Corners:

This guy has a wild voice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am spodiodi:

that was cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am chresti:

I think the organ was pretty shreddy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am chresti:

Good morning spodi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

Our next band has a nice golden hue with a slightly bitter aftertaste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Take heed! The soul set coming up next is gonna peel the paint off your inner walls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Uncle Michael:

Top of the hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael's cover-chain shows are a work of mad ingenious. Not to be missed!

What's happening?
  11:34am Funky16Corners:

I love this 45!
Avatar 11:35am StringOFperils:

Need to hear that w/o the fade under sometime. Sounds amazing!
Avatar 11:38am bobdc:

You might want to start calling your final set the American soul set--clear up the confusion for those of thinking "but you just played a soul set!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am sinner:

I would like to dedicate this soul set to the LA Dodgers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

How do ya like it, mauri! mauri! mauri!

@bobdc
You raise a fine point. I will take it up with the boss.

@sinner
I can't bring myself to root for the Braves and their hideous tomahawk-chop, but there is a sweet measure of schadenfreude watching the $300 million Dodgers go down in their annual flames.
  11:41am Funky16Corners:

I can’t tell you how many years I thought “Freddy Henchi” was one person...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

I urge you to stay tuned for Uncle Michael's Hinky Dinky Time. In case you need reminding, he is one of world's greatest radio DJs, and his special show coming up will make that evident.
Greatness awaits you here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Artie:

Sporadic but uplifting listening today (oh meetings! why you do me like you do?) - Thanks, Doug.
  11:44am Mr C:

Great record! Soul to Soul..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am sinner:

My bigger problem with the chop is that it reminds me of a sieg heil. It actually originated when Deion Sanders played with the Braves in the early 1990s and the FSU / Braves fans imitated the FSU chop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Doing you, Artie, is a great pleasure!

Mr C, the "yeti on soul mountain."
  11:47am mauri:

Why is wgmu hoarding all the greatest djs? Will uncle michael do another show of covers of an artist whose first name is neil? Beats me but itll be good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

I like getting under the covers with Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Uncle Michael:

That brooder from Barbara Brown was unreleased until it found life on a Kent compilation a few years ago. By all accounts she stopped performing in 1972.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

I'm waiting for your Neil Peart covers special, Uncle Michael. No really. I totally am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am sinner:
