This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello Explorers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm chresti:

Hi Flash! Making coffee...
Avatar 6:56pm Flash Strap:

Hi Chresti!
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Ok and we're off and luxurious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Jeff Golick:

What a coicidence. I, too, listen to Explorers Room on my hi-fi while laying on a red velvet floor covering, surrounded by LPs and my prized collection of antique gumballs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Jeff Golick:

It's like I'm looking in the mirror.
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Splendorous to imagine, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Jeff Golick:

But I kicked my shoes off.
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

actually I think they're jelly beans - we're thru the glass darkly after all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Jeff Golick:

Jelly beans? Let's call the whole thing off.
Avatar 7:04pm Hams:

it's twilight in tokyo somewhere.
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

@JG: you do have to admit, you can eat more of them in a session than you can gumballs
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hams!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Jeff Golick:

True, true, @Flash. But that's how I keep the jar so full.
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

good, thrifty strategy Jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Doug Schulkind:

I have arrived at the room filled will people who used to be plorers!
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

For those who missed or don't remember previous Red Velvet specials, this is a time to really luxuriate in some of my favorite in dollar-bin records, swim in the moods and dreams woven from their dust and mold spores
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doug! tonight we are sporers
  7:13pm northguineahills:

Mini-golfing while listening. First recreational activity I’ve done over 2 months. Social distancing Allone is easy.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

NGH that sounds heavenly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm chresti:

Haha Jeff, yeah the shoes aren't working.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm WR:

On discogs the is an overlap of a record by Buck Ram and The Leon Symphoniette. If you have the physical record, does it look like Ram had anything to do with the recording or did he just get to put his name on the USA King release?
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

@WR: I do have the physical copy, tonight is all physical in fact

I noticed that too - my copy is a serial number not represented on discogs, and has no back cover or any mention of Buck Ram, so I have no clue!
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

But I mean, maybe he really went to Japan and produced it! very weird record
  7:21pm northguineahills:

It’s exotica themed, across from my hotel. Sndtrk is perfect!
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: wow, where is that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Doug Schulkind:

I love it when you go marimba mad, Flash Strap!
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

This piece one of the more interesting to appear on any Kostelanetz LP, though that's not saying much
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

from marimbas to mambos tonight!
  7:28pm northguineahills:

Orlando
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

oh man i wish i'd hit that up last time I was in orlando six years ago
Avatar 7:32pm Flash Strap:

nice cover on this, reminiscent of the embrace on the front of Ritual of the Savage: i.ytimg.com...
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

on my copy, right below the track title "My Love And The Sea" someone has written FISHNET
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

some stunning stuff on this not-explicitly-exotic Baxter LP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm doctorjazz:

And hello to you all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

Fishnet, haha
Hi doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm chresti:

Maybe FISHNET is a reminder to wear fishnets while listening to that song.
Avatar 7:49pm Franco Twinkie:

As I skim a corn chip over a tub of hummis and stare at the smoggy late afternoon sky through he kitchen window, I too think of past conquests from the dollar bin!
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

amazing cover on this one : img.discogs.com...
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc!
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: one hopes
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

Hi Franco!
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

full disclosure, i think i paid 3 bucks for this
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

$3 is the new $1
Avatar 7:54pm Franco Twinkie:

All I can say is it must have been an intoxicating experience working in the Crown Records art department.
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

they have some real gonzo covers, bless them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm WR:

That La Tino Cha Cha Cha cover is a bit bizarre. So aggressively sexual.
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

@WR: true for a lot of mambo / cha cha records but rarely so demonically executed
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

when i bought this record, the guy had it on display - i asked him if it was in good condition at all and he just said "like you care?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm chresti:

Haha, a real salesman.
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

great "Lullaby" here
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: i know right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm melinda:

hello explorers
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

i mean he was sort of right-on, as i was likely to buy it regardless
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Hello Melinda!
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

really tight, super fun cha cha record here - not as deep as Tino La Tino's crew but a solid LP with great sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm adamdoesit:

"Stop that mambo. Let's cha-cha-cha!"
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

I love that part
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

Hi Adam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm adamdoesit:

Sup Flash Strap! Yeah, that was cool.
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

the record opens with a similar snippet of dialogue, extremely cool. I'll have to play that track sometime soon too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm chresti:

Cha cha is mambo sped up, right?
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

I have great affection for this Ros Calypso
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

"If you step on an atom bomb, keep calm"
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: i've never been entirely clear on the formal differences, but I think there's more to it than tempo changes. honestly don't know though
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

I guess it's derivative of both mambo and danzón? so it's more hybridized in that way? much to learn on this subject
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

Brown Skin Gal = classic international calypso workhorse of a song, originally written & recorded by King Radio in 1947
Avatar 8:25pm northguineahills:

Thanks Evan, I needed some recreation (only finished one over par).

My partner is a brown-skinned-gal....
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

good puttin' NGH
Avatar 8:27pm northguineahills:

...and I learned the difference b/tn Cha-Cha and Cha-Cha-Cuar!
Avatar 8:28pm still b/p:

I like dark chocolate and then whiskey, but will pass on chocolate whiskey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm melinda:

in that same vein I like vanilla and gin but vanilla gin sounds suspect
Avatar 8:29pm northguineahills:

They asked me if I wanted to feed the gators (I was wearing a UF Gator mask. I said it was cruel to keep them in captivitiy, pointed to my mask, as indicated alligators aren't exotic to me. (they're everywhere here)>
Avatar 8:30pm northguineahills:

I just wanted to get out of my hotel room.....
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

Hi B/P! I've enjoyed a chocolate rum before, very much
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: man sounds like a heck of a place to putt!
Avatar 8:32pm still b/p:

If more than one is likely, then that way lies sickness.
Avatar 8:36pm northguineahills:

Unless it's dessert, I pass on anything sweet, even then
it's once a month.

tourist traps.... (I'm not a PETA advocate, But unless zoos have room for animals to roam as they usually would, I'm against it. I went to the Mexico City zoo. And I saw a black bear in a small enclosure, pacing back and forth. I told my partner, we had to get out of there, I couldn't take it. Her sister didn't see the problem.
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

mm eating persimmon pudding now, picked a zillion of them the other day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm chresti:

My parents had a Belafonte record with Brown Skin Gal on it, I wondered about "stay home and mime baby"
Avatar 8:37pm northguineahills:

at evan: go on, go on, go on.....
Avatar 8:38pm northguineahills:

ok, Isle of Capri pre-clickied, weird. Don't remember it....
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: definitely agree about the zoos, though i've been to a lot of weird places and stuck it out in a herzogian horror
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

@Chresti: haha! yeah Belafonte's version by far the best known & most played
Avatar 8:39pm still b/p:

Floyd asked, "How can you have any putting, if you don't eat your gator meat?"
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

Don't think I've played it before actually
Avatar 8:40pm northguineahills:

Out of all of the places, the Jacksonville Zoo has almost a thousand acres, nad the animals are free to roam (prey and predators are kept seperate). Best zoo I've seen outside of San Diego and Ueno (outside Tokyo)
Avatar 8:41pm northguineahills:

@still b/p: I've had gator tail. Not a euphenism.....
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

wow my grandparents are in Jacksonville and i've never been to that zoo, shit man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm adamdoesit:

This is the official theme song of nostalgia for zoos to which you've never been.
Avatar 8:44pm northguineahills:

uhmmm, still b/p I was a single man in Gainesville before I moved to NYC w/ my gf at the time......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm chresti:

ngh, I have a hard time watching animals performing. Maybe feeding the gators ensures they don't eat visitors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm doctorjazz:

Heading home, thanks, Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm chresti:

Bye doc!
Avatar 8:46pm northguineahills:

alligators are as common in FL these days as rats are in FL (watch out for the fresh bodies of water, they usually keep their distance from adults, unless you harass them. Now, crocodiles, nope!
Avatar 8:49pm northguineahills:

when it comes to at least cumbia, my partner said the skimpy the outfit of the woman on the cover, the better the music (and she's a hard-core feminist). (got my best digs that way Mexico from said advice)>
Avatar 8:49pm northguineahills:

skimpier
Avatar 8:50pm northguineahills:

from Mexico (can't spell/grammar in any language)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm chresti:

I think we were given some form of gator in a can, friends brought back from New Orleans, (I think).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Aitch:

Late to the party.
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

Adios Doc! thanks for hanging out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Little Danny:

What Aitch said. Hi good people!
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

Hi Aitch, Hi LD!
Avatar 9:01pm northguineahills:

who did the Caravan marathon a while back? i could swear it was GTDS-related. forever ago....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm melinda:

I once had alligator gumbo. That's the most exotic meat I've tried.
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

I think Uncle Michael did one, but I believe someone on Rock n Soul Ichiban did one a long time back too
Avatar 9:03pm northguineahills:

aye, it was UM! (like 2014)
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

I've had both snake and gator, didn't much like either to be honest, but as far as exotic meats go I do think ostrich is very nice
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

The Westminster LP from which this comes has a great Olga Lehmann cover: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm chresti:

I've tasted rattlesnake. Somewhere between chicken and trout in flavor, smoky from cooking over/in a campfire.
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

Edric was a big UK calypso singer, great deep voice
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

always had great art: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm chresti:

Iguana is eaten, mostly south of here in Mexico.
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

this track from Dick At Home: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:10pm northguineahills:

Gator is nice. rattlesnake is palatable. But I like ratites a lot (very lean) (family of ostriches and emus, etc....)
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

almost a space-age sound out of this organ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm adamdoesit:

Sam? Sam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm chresti:

I guess more 'at home' records will be created this year.

i hope so!

Wild Bill really can breathe life into a tired standard from time to time
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

cool version of African Waltz, great intro
Avatar 9:39pm still b/p:

Saw a version of I Can't Give You Anything But Love recently in a "tribute to Jimmy McHugh" episode of Lawrence Welk. It was a guy doing it solo with a guitar. And a neckerchief. Not breathing the right life into it at all, at all.
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

I'm not even 100% sure Larry here sells me on it, but i do fancy this record's empty skating rink vibe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Little Danny:

OMG you are a brave man, Flash. You may set a songs/hour played record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Little Danny:

Plug in your busted guitars next door at the Cool Blue Flame for my blues drone special; this evening a particular strain of the great blues continuum with STRANGE ELECTRICITY: two hours of blues drones, hypnotic R&B guitars, and electric places and otherwordly modes in between. Guitar inventors, wreckers, eccentrics, and sound makers from Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Junior Kimbrough, and Bukka White to lost heroes like Pinebluff Pete, Early Drane, Julius King, Alabama Watson, and many, many others. Into other worlds!
