It's my second show of this year's WFMU's HELLRAISER fundraiser, and once again it's time for me to attempt to recapture my misspent youth and present a reasonable facsimile of my college radio days across the river on WNYU’s New Afternoon Show 40 (!!!) years ago. Future classics and songs that might never have been heard again until now, all presented in a Top 40 style just like I used to do on WNYU's New Afternoon Show* a long long time ago. You'll hear some of your old favorites and some others that'll become new faves instantly!

And while you're listening please take a moment to show your appreciation for WFMU and my show by making a pledge! If you've already pledged, THANK YOU! Your support is greatly appreciated.

Stay tuned for more special shows this month, and of course please take a moment to Like The Evan "Funk" Davies Show on Facebook and follow me on Twitter! Thank you.!

Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Julie M:

Hi Evan, enjoying the show. Don't be stressed out, I know, I just KNOW your listeners forgive you for any glitches, perceived or not
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Krull Sagan:

Handy, sounds like you have a party on your hands!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Gaylord Fields:

I wonder if The (English) Beat were managed by Mike LaFontaine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Kat in Chicago:

I remember nothing of The Headboys but this is a kick-ass track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Handy Haversack:

Ha, Krull, I'm sort of the "every day is Saturday to a dog" of people. But Wednesday nights are precious to us, listening-wise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Barkevious Shabazz:

This is a Ruts-Babylon's Burnin kinda show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm mariano:

Always happy to oblige, Krull ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Handy Haversack:

Ha, Kat! Kate and I just said the same thing!

  9:23pm Nick:

Waiting for” Hypno-Beat “ with the Station ID during the music break
  9:23pm wfmu listener phillip:

that song by the head boys is to be a dis intro song. anyone remember Bob westphal on WFDU?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm efd:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm ultradamno:

@CC Well, we did kick off with GoF...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Gaylord Fields:

Good heavens, this never fails to take me back to my college days and the New Afternoon Show! I half-expect efd to break in with an underwriting announcement for 99 Records.
Avatar 9:24pm kwhitehead:

Nostalgia machine in full motion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Handy Haversack:

efd, listener morphe' is likely in bed now since he's in Spain at this point, but he mentioned today that he found WFMU while scanning for your NYU show in I think he said '80.
  9:26pm CC:

Nostalgia is relative... it all depends on how old you are!!!...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm listener 126464:

dance party!
  9:27pm PatrickMC:

Who'll be delivering the "weather fortune"? (Ding-dong!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Gaylord Fields:

Ah, the good ol' days when bands like Wah! and Spizz would change their name to some variant after every release.
  9:28pm ?:

Headboys, YES!
  9:30pm wfmu listener phillip:

EXCUSE ME! mister "funk" I was a listener to WNYU's "new afternoon show" since 1985.
  9:30pm Chris:

First time I heard the Professionals was when my local public station, WAIF, was having a fund drive back in '82. I taped most of the show and wore that cassette out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm patrick321:

Listening to the chorus of "Remember" we renamed it "Green Amber" because it sounded like that, tho we have no idea if that's a thing or what it might mean.
  9:33pm CC:

Sometimes it helps to get reved up over nothing!!!...:)
  9:33pm John:

Hey Evan!

It is the New Afternoon Show all over again, in all the best ways. For a couple years there I could only hear it on vacations from college, so a random Wednesday in October would have been a special event indeed. Not unlike this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Handy Haversack:

"You think we should go with Flock of Budgies?"

"I think it should go up his arse!"
  9:34pm DThomas:

Fun show tonight. Thanks Evan.
  9:34pm cvh:

90.1fm seems to have gone silent :(
  9:34pm Nick:

Listener Philip, not to flex on you but I have cassette recordings I made of the show in 1981.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Tommy in Neversink:

90.1 just went down
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm ultradamno:

Fun fact: a group of seagulls is a colony, not a flock. www.reference.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm patrick321:

I did not get to the laptop soon enough to say kudos/thx for starting with the great 7" of damaged goods.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Tommy in Neversink:

90.1 is back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm efd:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Steve from Dunwoody:

Frequently modulating, indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm mariano:

Really like this Seagulls, never heard it before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Handy Haversack:

91.1 and 91.9 both strong in north Brooklyn.
  9:38pm CC:

Ultradamno... I think they are only a flock when they are flying together??....:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Tommy in Neversink:

Killer show !
  9:38pm cvh:

like Tommy in Neversink said, it seems 90.1 fm is back again.... it was a very short outage!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm mariano:

I'm for Sugarcubes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm efd:

  10:11pm VespaJack:

I loved NAS on WNYU. When I first came to NYC in 1980 I couldn't get FMU but could listen to you. I loved it. Mary Wing was spinning some '80's this afternoon. Very great.
  10:11pm PatrickMC:

Where is Naomi. Loved Pablo's show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Ike:

At some point they rolled the end of it back from 7:30 to 7:00 but I hardly ever listen anyway because neither their FM signal (in southern Brooklyn) nor their stream works very well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm patrick321:

Really enjoying this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Ike:

("It" being the New Afternoon Show, of course.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Kat in Chicago:

@Ike I'm surprised their stream is as bad as it is. I try to catch Beats in Space live on Tuesdays once in a while but it isn't always working when I do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Kat in Chicago:

It is pretty amazing that the "New" Afternoon Show still exists.
  10:17pm AS from MP:

just prior to corona shutdown, late Feb or early March driving home one evening here in north Jersey tuned into 89.1 I was listening to a great set, and then this exuberant and youthful DJ came on to back announce, the one and only Evan Funk Davies - circa '81 or '82? I wish I could recall some selections, they were pretty damn good
10:18pm Michael from the Left Coast:

I forgot about this Afraid of Mice record--it's really good

honestly surprised that in 7 months of doing shows from home that's the first time I lifted the tonearm off a record that was playing on the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm mariano:

Remember Stiv's performance in John Waters' "Polyester"? He and his punk friends go trick-or-treating at Divine's mother's house and when she tells them to buzz off he says "No treats means DEATH!"
  11:11pm PatrickMC:

sweet. Individuals are another band that should have broke big on the college radio/club circuit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm mariano:

Here, very much in the spirit of the show, watch with the volume down: www.youtube.com...

Love that Polyrock album. Philip Glass is on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm mariano:

The video for "Romantic Me" blew my mind when I was 10 or so. I read that the main guy from Polyrock, Billy Robertson, lived in Red Hook and was a regular at Sunny's till he passed away in 2018. I wonder if I ever crossed paths with him completely unaware of who he was.
