The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

I am reminded of audiophile porn, for example the crudely manipulative ads in magazines that depict, say, a pair of hefty monoblocks with a rose set upon one, a glass of sparkling wine upon the other. The difference here, however, is the informational value of the photos. I eschew porn, but not visual images that convey useful information.

Got any more pics of 45 labels...?

  10:51pm Eargasm!:

There was a part 2! Psychedelic Journey PT 2 is the flip of Running Through The Night!
  10:51pm wendy del formaggio:

@zoelpw: Okay, I’ll try to make it brief. Lactose (milk sugar) lives in whey, the liquid part of milk. In cheesemaking, 2 things happen to the whey. 1)The addition of a starter culture (beneficial bacteria) early in the process of making aged cheese ferments most of the lactose, turning it to lactic acid. Lactic acid is not lactose and won’t hurt your tummy. 2)The rest of the lactose gets washed away or pressed out after the curds (the milk solids) are set and formed into a wheel, brick, loaf etc. in aged cheese.
Thus, other than fresh cheese (fresh mozz, farmers’ cheese, cream cheese) you should be fine. Even mild cheddar has no lactose.

Bacon, bacon, BACONNNNN!
  11:19pm SeanD:

You all can keep your Marshall stacks, the skankiest fuzz guitar sound I ever got on tape was a c.1965 10-watt Danelectro amp I got for $5 at a church sale in '82 and when turned all the way up, would scream for 40 minutes until it overheated poor little thing

Gina, you are a food girl. To late to change. Except your fate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Gina Bacon:

You know I'm all for it, Julie P! (:
  11:21pm caveman dave:

My Dad had an oversize copy of the "Dante's Inferno" epic and as a kid the liine drawings in it toally freaked me out.

Candy-O, a bacon massage does sound intriguing, if somewhat messy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Chili Pagoda:

Yes! You went to Mineo’s. A near perfect slice of pizza. That’s a great way to spend an afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Candy-O'67:

Haha, Julie!
  11:22pm Beantown Doug:

Hmm... Frankie Jr. wasn't on Reprise?
Avatar 11:22pm Joe B:

Chillie Pagoda, spent two days in Pittsburgh last year, loved it. Is Jerry’s anywhere near downtown?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Gaylord Fields:

Haha, Bob! Damm straight that Frank Sinatra, Jr. would never cash in on his dad's name! That's why he used the "Jr." — to distinguish himself.
  11:26pm Beantown Doug:

This sounds like a different mix than I'm used to hearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Gina Bacon:

Hahaha Gaylord. Obviously!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Matt Clarke:

This Byrds 45 is a unique mix, right?
Avatar 11:26pm Snayle:

@Gaylord - :D
Avatar 11:26pm Joe B:

he technically wasn't even a Jr. - they had different middle names
  11:26pm caveman dave:

When Marshall Crenshaw played at the Whisky in LA he said, we gotta do a tribute to the Byrds, and broke into a killer version of this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Chili Pagoda:

Tim, Jerry’s isn’t too far from downtown, maybe a fifteen minute drive. It’s in a neighborhood called Squirrel Hill.
Avatar 11:26pm bigplanetnoise:

Yes - different than the mono LP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Gina Bacon:

That sounds tasty, coelacanthø!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Gaylord Fields:

@Joe B: Same thing with Nancy Sinatra, Jr.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Matt Clarke:

@Joey B: He did it HIS way!
  11:27pm RickJones:

I love THE BYRDS. I have seen Crosby, McGuire, and Hillman perform...but not together. Wonderful musicians. When I saw Hillman perform, Firefall was his backing band!!
Avatar 11:27pm Joe B:

Rick Jones, my first concert experience was seeing the Byrds in '67. Pure magic.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Candy-O'67:

@Joe B - fun fact for you to know!
  11:30pm RickJones:

Caveman dave...lucky you...my first concert was Thanksgivng night 1969 with HOYT AXTON, THE TURTLES, and 3 DOG NIGHT.
Avatar 11:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, years ago when I finally got the girl I had been chasing since high school, we were sitting at my dining room table eating chile verde I had made for us. She puts her fork down and looks at me and says " If you cooked for me every night like this, I would marry you!" Had I only known when we were kids, I could have saved myself lots of needless trouble.

Yes, Joe B, the Squirrel Cage is still there. Was operating last summer, don’t know about this year though. Last of the smoking bars. They make a fantastic burger.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Gina Bacon:

My mom lived in Hoboken in the 80's. A friend of hers from there met Frank Sr. backstage after a show somewhere. He went up to him hand outstretched, and said "I'm from Hoboken!" Frank pulled his hand back and said "Then move!' and walked away. He was crushed. They have a giant portrait of him in the library there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Gaylord Fields:

@Joe B: Haha! The MC2 was probably a pseudonymous Frank Sinatra Jr. and Dean Torrence.
