Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 3:11pm βrian:

We have a good cheese shop in town. But it has a cheesy name:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Handy Haversack:

Depends on the fromage, Sylvia!

that's cheesy. i like it.

howdy Handy
Avatar 3:12pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

While I don't know enough from 50 foot wave, I am always all ears when I hear her voice, Kristin Hersh's that is. I have not finished reading Rat Girl yet, but it is damn enjoyable. Especially the presence of Betty Hutton, who - unlike everyone else - always called her Krissy.
Avatar 3:13pm βrian:

Ah, you stepped right in the Brie. Quel fromage !"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Julie:

I knew her son for years and I had no idea it was her son
Avatar 3:14pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:13 Julie: Betty Hutton's?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Julie:

Kristin's
Avatar 3:15pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@βrian love the name! needs a version of Just an Illusion as a theme song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm chris:

hi, everybody. this Feeney Vix track is on point.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Handy Haversack:

Quel (fr)hommage!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey coel! Yesterday I saw the word coelacanth in an article for the first time in about a hunnert years.
Avatar 3:17pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

:DD
Avatar 3:17pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:15 Julie: Right! Makes sense as I just found out Betty Hutton had no sons...
Avatar 3:18pm northguineahills:

best sign I've seen recently, "chingatumaga, pendejo, no mas naranja" (not going to translate that, might get banned by wfmu)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Handy Haversack:

(Punning in a foreign language is probably overambitious!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Julie:

NGH I saw that too but I never did look it up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm coelacanth∅:

hey chris

hey Phillippe -you were reading the police blotters were you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm chris:

ngh, that's great. i want that as a bumper sticker.
Avatar 3:19pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm chris:

hey, coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm coelacanth∅:

nice album cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Handy Haversack:

coela, sorry I didn't see your question about whether we were going to be around another day till later -- was hoping to get your e-mail address in time while we were still up there but ran out of time in the end.

There were a couple of people playing guitar and singing next to the water as we paddled past in New Paltz. We paused to listen as best we could for a bit.
Avatar 3:22pm northguineahills:

@Handy: I've been inventing my own slang using various languages since HS, so, I might be overambitious.
Avatar 3:24pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@βrian @3:19 nope. I'm a bad French.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm coelacanth∅:

it's cool Handy. i wonder if i know the folks on the river. probably not i guess; i'm a bit out of the loop now. i used to know almost everyone here that might be doing that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm chris:

my first memory of pun mastery in a non-English language was reading Voltaire in French in HS. wowza, no way i can compete with that.
Avatar 3:25pm northguineahills:

@Julie: you get the jest. "chinga pendejo" is what my partner yells at me when she's mad at me. (MAGA, is self-explanatory, the rest is "no more orange").
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Julie:

Cha Cha oh yeah! I need to replace that one. is After Forever finnish?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Julie:

when I was on late night I went through a real symphonic metal phase then I followed Prof Dum Dum and I kinda avoided it
Avatar 3:44pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:43 Julie: they're dutch, not that I know them. As for symphonic metal, Nightwish is quite an obvious one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Julie:

I tracked down a ton of bands and then I got sick of them pretty fast. small doses I think
Avatar 3:47pm northguineahills:

I'm more into Finnish free folk, but I have a lot of Finnish metal as well.... (sort of the version Marcel plays).
Avatar 3:49pm northguineahills:

Cranes, the Flood mix! (yes I have this rekkid)>
Avatar 3:50pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:47 northguineahills: hey, cool! I'd like to hear your faves - I'm stupidly into recommendations be it music, films, drinks, food. The free folk (Metsäfolk = translates as Forest folk...) is not always my cup of tea,but in smaller doses... Paavoharju I love, but the songs are somehow traditional music rather than free folk - the atmosphere/sound-world of theirs is not.
Avatar 3:50pm northguineahills:

sounds a tad faster then mine.... (different mix).
Avatar 3:52pm northguineahills:

my former roommate played w/ kuupuu w/ and other bands at St Marks Church doing a sndtrk for a 70s Czech horror film (2006). Got to party w/ the lot of them.
Avatar 3:53pm northguineahills:

Paavoharju was one of them, and I do have a record by them...
Avatar 3:57pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:53 northguineahills: from Paavoharju's smallish discography, you really can not go wrong with Yhä Hämärää (2005). Laulu laakson kukista (2008) is good too. Joko sinä tulet tänne alas tai minä nousen sinne (2013) is very different from those two, but good as well, though unfortunately might be their last. Last gig I saw before this COVID-19 misery began was indeed Paavoharju (final show?)
Avatar 3:57pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

that was nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm coelacanth∅:

not finishing it now Phillippe but that's an interesting article
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Julie:

I had an encounter last night with a very nasty finnish speaker on twitter. the english stuff was offensive lord knows what he was saying in finnish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Julie:

Lau Nau is finnish I think?

@4:02 Julie: yes.

how many countries get categorized as "scandinavian?" Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, is that it?

I think I have the first one, Photocopu Cha Cha (and a single).

(Finns take the ferry to Riga to buy liquour and bring back for a third of the price at home [it's a thing])
Avatar 4:10pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:05 northguineahills: Good! The single, perhaps "Minä ja kapteeni/Onni" by Joose Keskitalo & Paavoharju, or "Uskallan"? Both are lovely even though I have the songs only on their box sets.
Avatar 4:10pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:09 northguineahills: more like Tallinn than Riga I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Handy Haversack:

And up to about 800 years ago, Scotland.
Avatar 4:13pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Like, locally Scandinavia means Sweden, Norway & Denmark, but thus spoke Wikipedia:"In English usage, Scandinavia also sometimes refers more narrowly to the Scandinavian Peninsula, or more broadly so as to include the Åland Islands, the Faroe Islands, Finland and Iceland."
Avatar 4:14pm northguineahills:

I popped the question in Iceland. Instead of hitting the geysers, I made us go on a cultural tour hours outsdie Reykjavik, and went to a folk/mythology museum. (I"m such a dork).

Avatar 4:18pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:14 northguineahills: plus, reading "Trainspotting" and other Irvine Welsh was easier as soon as I noticed some of the words of Scottish dialect are actually near swedish and even german ones, like "bairn" = "barn" = child, "greet" = "gråta" = to cry etc..
Avatar 4:18pm βrian:

My phone and I get together 2 or 3 times a week. In the meantime, I have only a vague notion of where it is. We have an understanding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm coelacanth∅:

legally the landlord must give 24 hours notice to get into your apartment or house. longer in some places, much longer (unless it's an emergency). i doubt a text is legit at all, from a legal standpoint.

haha you're welcome Ike.
Avatar 4:20pm Daya:

@4:18 Cha Cha: When I read/saw “Trainspotting”, it helped that I lived in Ireland for a time, as much of the slang is similar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm spodiodi:

that first time was to do something that benefitted us, but still. this time (today) wasn't our place but "ground s" kinda visit. we didn't interact with them.
Avatar 4:21pm northguineahills:

@Photocopy: The Yorkie dialect itself has plenty of Norse etymology. Heck, even standard English has plenty of Norse loan words.
Avatar 4:21pm βrian:

I have a friend who works for a tech company and who has no cell phone. She just has noooooo interest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm spodiodi:

βrian, that's the kinda phone interaction i like. i really never use the phone as a phone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Julie:

Avatar 4:23pm Daya:

When I left the country (for Ireland), they were called “mobile phones”, when I came back, everyone was calling them “cell phones”, weird
Avatar 4:23pm northguineahills:

I haven't had a landline since 2001. But my cell phones last about 6 years, so they always look outdated.

@Julie: Yorkshire, northeast England.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm coelacanth∅:

i have a cell phone, no "home phone". when i'm home i keep it on a table in the living room where i might keep a landline phone, and turn the ringer down at night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm spodiodi:

i've never had an interest in cell phones. my friends were in disbelief when i got one (and when i got a gmail addy :-| ) -- i KNEW better and i still did it. been backing out since (11-year effort so far)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm coelacanth∅:

i never saw myself getting a cellphone but when i moved "upstate" to live in a tent in the woods i needed it for work. so when i moved to a semi-permanent structure i chose the cell phone over the landline because it was less expensive.
i don't use it for anything but as a phone, generally.
Avatar 4:28pm Daya:

I got my first cell/mobile in 1993, which I needed for work. It was an AT&T “bag phone” (google it), that was basically like carrying around a laptop.

Avatar 4:29pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:20 Daya: cool! Not that I understand any of it when spoken, like when I watched Wedding Belles I only managed to follow the story cos I'd read the Irvine Welsh short story it is based on previous to that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm spodiodi:

i had a mildpassing interest in making/using phone dialers back when i'd use payphones to call long distance fam/friends/gf while working far from home
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm coelacanth∅:

i've never had an "app" (not a word) on my pocket computer (cell phone) either.
and it's disconnected from the web, data, gps, gobble maps, etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm spodiodi:

i was with him that night and had to give it props when the tow truck arrived (we didn't know if the call was successfyl enough until he showed up, b/c the battery was lame
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm chris:

the bag phones were cool because they had a handset away from the antenna. i irradiated my brain with the brick, that was my first cell phone. now for sure codependent with my iPhone. no landline anymore.

Avatar 6:17pm Daya:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Julie:

I really hadn't heard any of her solo stuff till recently, not bad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Handy Haversack:

Siouxsie is my cignet to pay better attention!
Avatar 6:18pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:09 Julie: well yes that's quite a cast. Today's film (35mm) that I saw also had an all-star-cast, The Three Musketeers by Richard Lester I mean. Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Geraldine Chaplin, Charlton Heston, Faye Dunaway,
Christopher Lee, Spike Milligan, Raquel Welch... silly movie but I enjoyed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm spodiodi:

unfortunately, Lucky 13 bit the dust in '17 (i just learned --- feh) www.sfweekly.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm spodiodi:
