A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 9:03am northguineahills:

Love the Juane Quick-toSee-Smith (love art and maps, best combo!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Handy Haversack:

A phrase rarely associated with the Parkway, queems!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am queems:

@handy i agree!!!
Avatar 9:06am northguineahills:

I won't tell you how I relaxed the last time while driving on the Parkway (combination of music and something else).

Avatar 9:10am northguineahills:

@Handy: I was in my 20s, and going skiing w/ friends upstate, and there was something herbal (we somehow got on the Jersey side, as the traffic was less then the NYC side)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am yeti bob:

happy lower case morning crudbringer

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Trouble:

I just read that thursday is named after THOR the norse god of thunder. something i am sure they taught me in grade school but who can remember yesterday never mind third grade
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am YETI BOB:

@Trouble: In Germany they call it "Donnerstag" which literally means "Thunder Day"
  9:13am Slaboch:

This sounds fantastic!
Avatar 9:14am dougseidel:

And that map is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Crudbringer:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am YETI BOB:

Saturday is for Saturn, Sunday is for the Sun, Monday is the moon, Wednesday is Woden, Friday is for Freya. But the really weird one is Tuesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Handy Haversack:

Crudbringer, good to see you!
Avatar 9:16am Dances with Moomins:

Thursday is for Trouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Handy Haversack:

Not a Tyr fan, YB?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am yeti bob:

HH: Not that I'm not a fan. Just - who ever heard of that god? And in German it's Dienstag, “Day of Thingsus”). Thingsus is the attested Latin name of a Germanic god who may or may not be the same as Tiw (Tyr).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Webhamster Henry:

Hi Modernaires! Sound bath followed by tea + honey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am yeti bob:

Thingsus? I don't know, I think the etymolgists are just having a bit of fun. "Praise Thingsus!"
Avatar 9:18am northguineahills:

Monday=Moonday, Tuesday = Tyi's day (anglos saxon god of war, like mars), Wednesday = (woden/oden's day, norse), Thursday = Thors day (obvious), Friday = Frigg (germanic goddess of fertility, Saturday = Saturn's day (Roman), Sunday = (obvious). This has been your etymological daily broadcast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am pantz:

Avatar 9:22am northguineahills:

@Dances w/ Moomins: when is reindeer meat day?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am yeti bob:

@ngh: I think the Greek/Roman contributions to our culture are more acknowledged. At least in my growing up, we were taught about Rome and Greece and their cultures and gods, but not much about the Vikings other than that they were "marauders".
Avatar 9:23am Dances with Moomins:

Avatar 10:13am Dances with Moomins:

@Crudbringer, in Finland it's pesukarhu or wash bear but we never see them. Not sure they are here. Trash Pandas down in Alabama they say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Trouble:

yes gregory, princeton did have a problem with equal pay, AND rutgers got hit with a law suit recently. It's in today's NY Times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Handy Haversack:

I am sure I could get someone to take the bet, but my great regret is that I have no idea how to collect on it: that 100,000 years or so from now give or take, raccoons will have achieved real space flight and gotten off this rock.

Increasing paw sensitivity indeed!
Avatar 10:15am jdaAndAnoukFromKöln:

Rutgers is public, right? Aren't all salaries published?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Handy Haversack:

Whose idea was it to import (or, conversely, export) raccoons? Could it have been ... the raccoons'?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Trouble:

yes @ brian, rutgers is one of the public universities of NJ
Avatar 10:22am βrian:

You might ask the raccoons, but surely they'd say, "Hey, I wash my hands."
  10:23am Listener Gregory:

Rutgers is public. In many state universities, the salaries are therefore public, but not sure about New Jersey.
I don't think Rutgers will be as quick to settle as Princeton. State universities have not been on the cutting edge of equity issues in general. Everyone has a strong tendency to fall back on, "We follow all the regulations correctly" for almost any issue.

I worked at a UNICEF benefit a few years ago where Diana Ross performed, she was/is beautiful, amazing, breathtaking. Also haven't quite recovered from seeing the Supremes' dresses in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland a million years ago. Someday we'll be together
