Avatar 11:48am Sean in Bristol UK:

Good afternoon Irene, hello one and all. Wow, that's treasured and priceless momento
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Irene Trudel:

Welcome all! Happy to celebrate John Lennon's 80th birthday today! Gonna play some old favorites and a few surprises. @Sean, there's a great story to accompany that autograph, which I now believe is not real. But I'' tell it later in the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Michael 98145:

Hello, All
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Good morning-ish, Irene!

Hi Michael, Summer and Michael and Sylvia, YETI BOB, melinda and Bas! great to have you all here today.

Hi Irene! And hello all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

"But who would fight this wonderous beast? I wouldn't for a kickoff. Forget me fightin' it, Dudley!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm YETI BOB:

@Irene: That photo is fascinating. Not just the signature but the writing above it - doesn't look like the kind of handwriting that was taught in the UK. Those letterforms - especially the capital 'K' and the lower case 'r' - remind me of handwriting style they use in Germany.
Avatar 12:10pm Brian in UK:

Hello Irene. I believe that John Lennon was 5' 10" tall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm YETI BOB:

(I'm not a handwriting expert or anything, that's just what it looks like to me)
Avatar 12:12pm Brian in UK:

Hi, Irene! Thanks for hosting this special, and for playing "Dear Prudence" featuring that vocal performance by John McCartney.

Jai Guru Deva, om
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Deborah:

Good Afternoon Everyone!
  12:14pm Listener Robert:

Ever hear Neil Cicierega's mashup "Imma Be"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Irene Trudel:

HI Constant Follower, Brian alanr and Gaylord! YETI BOB, I have a story to accompany it. I've speculated that Someone else signed it. Then again, I look at John's signature on the Walls and Bridges cover and they look similar to me. I've shown it to Sean Lennon, whose eye bugged out a bit when he saw it.I But it's a bit of a mystery.
  12:15pm Listener Robert:

I meant "Imma Let It Be".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Stanley:

Hi Irene
Holding back the tears on 'Across The Universe'. Adopted it as my anthem when I was in India, way back in the day.
(sorry, Brian)
Avatar 12:18pm Brian in UK:

Go Johnny Rhythm, go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Michael 98145:

They don't make them like this anymore
Avatar 12:19pm Brian in UK:

What's up, Stanley?
Avatar 12:20pm Constant Follower:

Stanley, feeling it too. So many times attached to these songs.
Avatar 12:22pm Brian in UK:

To me it is not so much what the Beatles gave us as where would be if they had never recorded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Irene Trudel:

Welcome Deborah, Robert and Stanley! Yes, Across the Universe is truly a beautiful song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm YETI BOB:

To me, the 'n's in "Lennon" on Walls and Bridges look more curvy. Other samples of Lennon's writing are also more curvy/loopy. There's something "spiky" about the writing in the autograph. (Again just my amateur opinion)
Avatar 12:26pm Constant Follower:

Agree Brian. Where would we be? Would be an interesting exploration.
Fantastic show so far Irene :)) Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm YETI BOB:

I love this story. It is probably fake, but it's also very real :)
  12:33pm Listener Robert:

You like bubble bath, Ms. Trudel? Had I known around 15 years ago I'd've sent some of my formula to you instead of to Ken, whose kids I thought would like it. But when the station then came out with its Miracle Soap, it was like coal to Newcastle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Deborah:

Grading endless online work and feeling calm, surprisingly. Even Clyde The Ginger Kitty is grooving on the sounds of long ago, but not long ago.
Avatar 12:37pm Hubig Pie:

Ah, a real Lennon/McCartney song
Avatar 12:38pm Brian in UK:

Love Ringo's slippery drumming on A Day.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm YETI BOB:

You can listen to these songs 500 times and still find something new - a little drum flourish from Ringo, Paul's contrapuntal bass, little sounds in the background, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Gaylord Fields:

@Hubig Pie: I appreciate that recent Beatles scholarship has revealed that many putative all-Lennon songs or all-McCartney songs are a lot more Lennon AND McCartney than previously thought.
  12:41pm Listener Robert:

I've never been much of a fan of Beatle music. I think a lot of these work better as poetry than songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

We hadn't heard any of these 50th anniversary mixes yet - wow.
Avatar 12:45pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Agree Summer, Michael and Sylvia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Maggie B.:

This set is bringing me back to fall 1980 when walking home from Hunter College, I encountered John on the street twice. First time it was too much of a shock, but the second time I made sure to say hello as he hung out in front of his building. He smiled and said hello!
Avatar 12:47pm Hubig Pie:

Proly so, Mr. Fields. That one is just so obvious tho
Avatar 12:47pm Sean in Bristol UK:

My first memory of The Beatles was going to stay with my nan in Oxford during the sixties, she had a house full of students living there. My bedroom had Beatle's wallpaper which had a most positive effect on my introduction to their music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm YETI BOB:

Does anyone know if the 50th Anniversary Edition ever came out on vinyl?

Avatar 12:51pm Brian in UK:

We used to have to make Dovetail joints in woodwork classes.
Avatar 12:52pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Classy, Brian!
Avatar 12:52pm StringOFperils:

These sound really good. Is it just fancypants radio compression/equalization, or are these remixes actually a step up in the audio experience dept?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm YETI BOB:

@SoP: I started by looking at Discogs but they list 598 separate releases of the White Album, so it's a bit daunting!
Avatar 12:54pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Marvellous, marvellous set, Irene, thank you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm YETI BOB:

@SoP: Giles Martin and Sam Okell spent 3 years on these remixes. They sound really good IMO.
Avatar 12:55pm StringOFperils:

@yeti > thus my question about yet another remix. there seem to be so many of them that I don't know what to think anymore. I'm too tired to think. 2020 has killed my thinker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm YETI BOB:

SoP: I'm reading this: www.mixonline.com...
Avatar 12:55pm StringOFperils:

Avatar 12:56pm Brian in UK:

Here, Joe McGasko & Jim Price debated the merits of a single White album.
www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 12:58pm Hubig Pie:

Joe McGasko did an edit The White Album down to a single lp show a couple years back. The comment board ran amok.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm YETI BOB:

Everybody thinks the White Album would be better with that one song left off, but nobody agrees on what that one song is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Stanley:

You're welcome Irene, I promised to pledge everytime there was a 'Nostalgia & Tears' moment this month (see above)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Good day, All!
Avatar 1:00pm βrian:

A rainy day here on the isthmus. Good day.
Avatar 1:04pm Brian in UK:

This might be Kenneth Allsop interviewing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Irene Trudel:

Summer and Michael and Sylvia, yeah some of those mixes really pop out now. Humbig Pie, I remember that show with Jim Price, another mega-fan of the Beatles.Brian, thanks for that. I don't know who a lot of the UK presenters were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Gaylord Fields:

Irene, I'm glad you pointed out that there is a formidable Beatlemaniac contingent at WFMU. In fact, they are one of the most played artists on the station.
  1:11pm Listener Robert:

I liked Howard Stern's version of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Deborah:

Workingclass Hero is very powerful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Irene Trudel:

Gaylord, you are among those Beatlemaniacs! I remember fondly all those Fake Beatles shows you co-hosted with Michael Shelley, Dennis Diken and others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Gaylord Fields:

Irene, it's true — I love the Beatles, and I love Fake Beatles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm YETI BOB:

Irene - this show has inspired me to donate to the station, even though I already donated this cycle ... just wanted to show some extra appreciation for this fine show today!
Avatar 1:21pm Brian in UK:

Gaylord, it really cracked me up to discover that there were Rutles tribute band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Michael 98145:

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends
Avatar 1:31pm WLSClark:

Irene, just checked in to WFMU for fun and seeing your Lennon show going. Great sets so far for sure. Sure the Beatles get tons of airplay, but that's WHY they are the Beatles! As John sang:

REMEMBER
  1:31pm Bill D:

I remember hearing Revolution 9 the first time . I was waiting for something to happen, and nothing did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Irene Trudel:

I'm falling behind in my greetings! Hi to you, βrian, StringOFperils, Hopey Sockmonkey, doctorjazz, Bill D and WLSClark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Irene Trudel:

So true, WLSClark! Bill D, I remember thinking the same thing, as I hadn't dipped into mind-altering substances at the point in my life.
Avatar 1:39pm WLSClark:

We rolled the turntable backwards by hand to hear what was backwards back then.
Also, how many of us bought enless boots to get songs like Mary Jane? I sure did. The quality would always be lousy first time and would usually get better and better with each release like they were sitting with masters and just messing them up to keep selling better boots each time.
  1:41pm Bill D:

What's Your New Mary Jane was on bootlegs for years in the 70s . I think the notes from Anthology say Lennon was really stoned and went back to the studio one night and let loose .
Avatar 1:45pm WLSClark:

Yeah, am wondering if Irene is playing a boot now, as I got one where the whole side of the album was Strawberry Fields multiple takes.
Avatar 1:45pm Constant Follower:

Oohhh... never heard Strawberry Fields like this. Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm YETI BOB:

Oh goody, they have the 50th Anniversary White Album on vinyl at my local record shop! I haven't been there since March but they are reopened and maybe this is my excuse to pop in.
Avatar 1:48pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Wow, listening to this for the first time, mind blown!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, it's a couple of bootlegs. Several years ago they filtered out into the public, which is what spawned the Anthology Series albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm YETI BOB:

I have 3 (scratchy, old) copies of the White Album already, but I have room on my shelf for a 4th (esp. since it sounds this good)
  1:52pm Bill D:

WLS Clark this is either from Anthology 3 or The Sgt Pepper Box set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Michael 98145:

Whoa
Avatar 1:53pm WLSClark:

Yeah, I have all of those, but it was more intriguing and fun to get them one at a time on boots back in 70's/80's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm YETI BOB:

People have been messing around with backwards sounds since Edison invented the phonograph. In 1878, Edison noted that, when played backwards, "the song is still melodious in many cases, and some of the strains are sweet and novel, but altogether different from the song reproduced in the right way"
  1:56pm Bill D:

I got the 6cd version of the White Album for Xmas that year
It's incredible ! but I still have the original great sounding vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Irene Trudel:

Some of what I played is not on the official releases.
Avatar 1:59pm WLSClark:

Back in the 60's we would take Rev 9 and tape it on reel to reel and then twist the tape to play back backwards so it made the speed correct. Better than turning the turntable backwards manually and possibly ruining needles too.
Avatar 2:02pm northguineahills:

@WLSClark: I did it w/ my pro-turntable in the 2000s (it went backwards and played 16.5 rpms contiunously to 78 rpms (using the slider)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Irene Trudel:

Same here Bill! I've only listened to a fraction of the discs on the box set.
Avatar 2:11pm northguineahills:

I was 4 when Lennon's assasination came on the news. My mom was horrified. I had to ask who he was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm YETI BOB:

@ngh: I was 15, I cried and cried.
Avatar 2:13pm WLSClark:

I sat and played his records from the time I got off work the next day until I went to bed. I was 24. Downed a few in the process. I ALWAYS believed the dream would never be over.....and it was, suddenly.
  2:14pm Robert S:

I remember the Gertz flagship store on Jamaica Avenue. I shopped there on and off. I grew up in Oakland Gardens (Bayside).
Avatar 2:14pm Brian in UK:

Never understood how the Beatles could sing such a sad song as Help in such a jaunty style.
Avatar 2:15pm northguineahills:

I'm unashamely a Beatles fan. When my partner moved in w/ me, I just started playing my rekkids in ABC order. After a week in a half, she couldn't take it anymore. ( i have a lot of Beatles material)>
Avatar 2:18pm Brian in UK:

Instant Karma. Written, Recorded and Released in a day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Irene Trudel:

I remember Lennon's assassination So vividly. I was staying over my boyfriend's partens house and he woke me up at 6 or 7am with the news. I was totally crushed. Still am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Irene Trudel:

Yes Robert! Another Queens native I'm guessing.
  2:26pm Robert S:

Yes! I moved to New Jersey in September 2001 just before 9/11. I frequented Flushing frequently. I saw the Asian transformation of Northeast Queens. It gave the County some character.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Charlie:

Back from errands on my day off, and digging some John.
Avatar 2:29pm Brian in UK:

Irene, a delightful show. We do need to be reminded of the mans talent even though it is ingrained into our souls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Charlie:

Robert S -- I lived in Queens from 1958, and I can assure you, there were plenty of characters there before!
  2:32pm Robert S:

I can vouch for that. Especially at Shea Stadium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Charlie:

lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Irene Trudel:

So true!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm doctorjazz:

Really enjoying the show today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Charlie:

Irene, here's my *not* John Lennon story. My mom (and I of course) loved the Beatles. One year ('66?) she had a JL birthday party, invited some of her friends over. During the party, the doorbell rang, and it was a telegram--from JL, saying he was sorry he couldn't make the party! Obvs, some friend of hers had sent it, but no one ever fessed up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Irene Trudel:

Oh Charlie! What a great story. Your mom must've nearly fainted!
Avatar 2:37pm northguineahills:

Cool, Charlie!

Shea Stadium, Flushing. Not to be confused w/ Shea Stadium the music venue in Bushwick...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Charlie:

Irene, true! There was a moment of possibility there somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Charlie:

Speaking of Shea, I saw the fab ones there, '66.
Avatar 2:39pm WLSClark:

I taped that ABC show on reel back in the 70's. Loved the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm doctorjazz:

That's a cool story, Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Charlie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Charlie:

I love how J & P sound like they're genuinely having a blast making this record.
  2:44pm Robert S:

Too young at the time to attend a Beatles concert at Shea. First concert I attended was a Simon and Garfunkel concert at Forest Hills in '69.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Charlie:

It was a week before my 8th bday. Mum and dad took me.
Avatar 2:47pm Brian in UK:

Charlie, that is cool.
Avatar 2:48pm Brian in UK:

Only Beatles' single I bought was Ballad of John & Yoko, he still had a sense of humour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

This bit of John reading 70s radio ads is so good!
  2:49pm Robert S:

Ah Korvettes! There was one in my neighborhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Charlie:

Loved that radio bit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Gaylord Fields:

"Some Other Jealous Guy" — well done, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Charlie:

When this album was released, one of the NYC rock stations had a pre-release exclusive, and aired the whole album as a special. I taped it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Irene Trudel:

Korvettes is where I bought my first Beatles LP, Revolver, at $2.00. I paid all in pennies that I'd saved up!

Here is the film. It is short and a lot of fun

Pennies well spent, Irene! (trying to find a joke on "declare the pennies on your eyes")

Thanks for helping me celebrate John Lennon's 80th birthday! I'll have to do another one of these in December.

I bought most of my records at Korvettes. It had a pretty good record selection.

Wonderful show, Irene, and how lovely to end with "Beautiful Boy". Choking up a little here.

BTW, The Joint in the Woods was a real venue. I lived in Morristown, NJ for many years and was happy to have a club nearby. I can't remember who i saw there --I was kind of young to be going to shows then but Renaissance comes to mind. It was a good concert place for a brief while. I think it burned to the ground in the late 70's. Here's someone's remembrance including a poster for that T.Rex show. musiccitymike.net...
