Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Options October 15, 2020: Strange Electricity
This evening a particular strain of the great blues continuum with STRANGE ELECTRICITY: two hours of blues drones, hypnotic R&B guitars, and electric places and otherwordly modes in between. Guitar inventors, wreckers, eccentrics, and sound makers from Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Junior Kimbrough, and Bukka White to lost heroes like Pinebluff Pete, Early Drane, Julius King, Alabama Watson, and many, many others. Into other worlds!

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Matt from New Orleans:

Daniel it’s a damn shame you snubbed one of my favorite actors, Edward G. Robinson. Ginger Rogers should have stuck to Fred Astaire musicals. It was never going to be an amazing film but she almost single-handedly kills it. Phil Karlson has directed some fun noirs and this is probably my least favorite of them due to Ginger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Matt from New Orleans:

Looking forward to the electric blues journey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Matt from New Orleans:

And I dig Vincent. It’s a good short for Halloween month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Little Danny:

Hi Matt! No snubs intended, it's truly random what I grab from my library in the last moments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Matt from New Orleans:

I was just commenting that you didn’t include his name when he was definitely as much a star as the other two
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Little Danny:

It's just a quick scene, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Matt from New Orleans:

Makes sense
Avatar 9:59pm Flash Strap:

All yours LD! can't wait to hear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Little Danny:

Greetings folks! I actually got my act together and whipped up a special.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Matt from New Orleans:

Bukka is playing electric?
Avatar 10:01pm Franco Twinkie:

Coolio! I hope I'm together enough to type.
Avatar 10:02pm StringOFperils:

Took this Bukka White LP out of the public library in 1976 and never looked back. Thx for playing some of it Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm doctorjazz:

Great opener, really BLUE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Little Danny:

@Matt: nope, just hitting some great drones in there.
Avatar 10:02pm Flash Strap:

pumped for this man
Avatar 10:02pm Franco Twinkie:

This is waking me up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Little Danny:

Franco! S.o.P.! Doc! Flash! Matt! Welcome friends.
Avatar 10:03pm StringOFperils:

...although, that's an earlier iteration.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Matt from New Orleans:

Guess I was taking the name too literally
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Little Danny:

"Fixin' To Die Blues" was a big moment when I first heard it via my dad's record collection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Matt from New Orleans:

Bukka White was the man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Little Danny:

I played one of Bukka's other tracks recently, it was singularly responsible for the idea for this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm chresti:

I could listen to ""Fixin' to Die Blues" all day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm WR:

Hi all, listening while cooking some kind of chicken and potato dish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm melinda:

hi gang
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Little Danny:

Me too, chresti! I first heard it as a late teen, probably listened to it a dozen times over in that first flush!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Matt from New Orleans:

I visited Bukka’s marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail
Avatar 10:06pm StringOFperils:

Wow, Matt, a hallowed moment to be sure.
Avatar 10:06pm Franco Twinkie:

Hi Melinda. It was real hot here today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Little Danny:

My dad actually saw him play in the '60s...
  10:07pm Chris Brown:

CBF sounds louder in Alpine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Little Danny:

Haha, hi Chris!!! Welcome to the neighborhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm chresti:

Wow, that's a real awesome Dad, Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Little Danny:

He has his moments, chresti! Just talked to him earlier this evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Little Danny:

There will be some classics tonight, be forewarned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Matt from New Orleans:

It’s near Houston, MS. I’ve been twice. Once when I hitchhiked through the delta during college and more recently when I biked from Houston to New Albany on a nice trail that’s been built between them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Little Danny:

Maru is a pretty serious blues 78 collector
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Matt from New Orleans:

Maru is no Robert Crumb or Harvey Pekar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm WR:

Edward G. Robinson with Brian Keith and G Rogers, Matt you've tweaked my curiosity, gonna take the film down for viewing.

And hello to all the cool blue flamers, doing quick review of the comments and then back to the stove.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Little Danny:

Hi hi hi WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm WR:

So Danny, did you get that Third Man Paramount set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Matt from New Orleans:

You talking about the $800 set in the handmade cabinet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Little Danny:

I slogged through the MP3s, WR, culled 'em down to a coupla dozen tracks in total.

Not all of it was interesting, that's for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Little Danny:

@Matt: lemme know if you hear any of that odd digital static this week...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Matt from New Orleans:

So far it’s been fine
Avatar 10:20pm Franco Twinkie:

I might consider shaving if I could get someone else rub my face with a hot towel first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Matt from New Orleans:

My barber normally offers hot towel shaves but they’re off the menu currently
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm chresti:

I like "Shake 'em on Down", too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Little Danny:

Oh yes chresti! I don't quite know the musical theory behind, but Bukka White had a really incredible of combining his voice and guitar into all sorts of otherworldly progressions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Little Danny:

This JLH track in particular has been a source of fascination for me for years now.
Avatar 10:32pm Franco Twinkie:

John Lee Hooker is one of the few people I have seen that actually gave me chills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Matt from New Orleans:

I hadn’t realized my dad’s copy of The Country Blues of John Lee Hooker was worth so much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Little Danny:

I believe it, Franco. JLH's another cat who really seemed drawn to odd modes and drones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm ParUbi:

hey everyone, hi Danny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Little Danny:

ParUbi! Hello pal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Aitch:

Amazing sounds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm doctorjazz:

IN THE SWAMP!
Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Ignore Function:

Love this Junior Kimbrough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Little Danny:

Thank you Aitch! I agree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Matt from New Orleans:

I got to see Junior twice in the 90s
Avatar 10:37pm Franco Twinkie:

Matt, Wow!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Little Danny:

Hi Ignore! You are a man of good taste so of course you liked that! It's incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm doctorjazz:

One damn chord, don't need no more!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Little Danny:

Exactly, doc!

That Country Jim has such forward momentum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Matt from New Orleans:

I went to his juke two nights in a row when I was hitchhiking. It was the summer of 97.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm doctorjazz:

Bar lines? Who needs em?!
Avatar 10:40pm Franco Twinkie:

" I was sittin' in the corner weepin' to myself." Right to the point, I'd say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Aitch:

The Explorers Room / Blue Flame double solidly booked into my WFMU calendar these days. What Was Music after that on the live channel for added cerebral expansion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Matt from New Orleans:

I believe I saw him in the summer of 87 as well Franco outside at Lincoln Center when I was nine but I have no real specific memories of that night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Little Danny:

@Aitch: Glad to hear. I am really, really glad that Evan and I are back to back. Can't imagine a better lead-in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Aitch:

Even better in FLAME-O-SCOPE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Little Danny:

HEY EVERYBODY:

Does the basic conceit/premise of tonight's make sense? It's a very specific and kinda subtle theme. Wholly sound-oriented.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm WR:

Danny, Totally unrelated to the current show, but earlier this week Robert Ashley was played on Sheena stream and i remembered that you live in Marfa TX. Did you see any of the Spanish version of Ashley's Vidas Perfectos that was performed and filmed in Marfa in 2012 or 2014ish?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm chresti:

Aitch, a trifecta of great shows.
Avatar 10:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Matt, at nine you might or maybe not have understood Baby Pease Don't Leave Me.
Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Ignore Function:

Yeah, it makes sense Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm doctorjazz:

Man, there's smoke coming out of my speakers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Little Danny:

@WR: I did not! Though my lady helped with some of its logistics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Matt from New Orleans:

It certainly would have gone right over my head
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Little Danny:

Thanks Ignore, I appreciate it.
  10:47pm Chris Brown:

Stepped away and missed Country Jim...but finding his promo photo in a Baton Rouge antique store once made my day. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bJT4rE9LvKI/UQ7m36tiPFI/AAAAAAAAApA/15b9bV7KMDE/s1600/Country+Jim+photograph+(circa+1950).jpg
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm chresti:

Makes perfect sense, LD.
Avatar 10:47pm Franco Twinkie:

I think it makes sense Danny, I can't get out of the chair for fear of breaking the spell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Little Danny:

@chris: This show seems solidly in your line and place of work, somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Little Danny:

Thanks Chresti & Franco! GOOD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm doctorjazz:

Primitive, basic, and raw stuff! Loving it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm chresti:

I love acoustic guitar blues, especially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Matt from New Orleans:

I saw Dave Bartholomew perform this at Preservation Hall inches away from Dave. I was third in line. It was an all acoustic set through his early work. It was one of the best nights of my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Little Danny:

Wow!
Avatar 10:54pm Franco Twinkie:

The Monkey is crazy good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm WR:

Thank you Danny, I've been wanting to hear Bartholomew's Monkey Speaks his mind since Grogan's Primate show earlier today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Matt from New Orleans:

When I heard on WWOZ that morning that he was doing a show that night, I left work early and stood in line for hours. He was well into his 90s at this point. He could still blow his trumpet. It certainly made its way to Jamaica. New Orleans R&B was huge in Jamaica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Matt from New Orleans:

There’s no ska without NOLA R&B
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm WR:

PS: you are wondering if the concept of your show is working. Consider that you've got audiophile doctorjazz loving it. And you just invoked Frankie Lee Sims by name, so where it the tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm doctorjazz:

I'm an audio snob, but I ain't no fool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Little Danny:

@WR: I'm hoping to get to Frankie Lee Sims if time allows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Little Danny:

There are some great lyrics in this JLH track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm doctorjazz:

Going to lay the phone down, catch the rest of theshow, thanks, Danny, night all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm WR:

Laters doctorjazz!
Avatar 11:09pm Franco Twinkie:

This is so painful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Matt from New Orleans:

Night Doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Little Danny:

House on the water
Don't need no land
When I'm dead and gone
Bury me
In that deep blue sea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm chresti:

Night doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm WR:

Ok. The pot is simmering, what's on theFLAME-O-SCOPE™ ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Little Danny:

I'm actually not sure what this is! Black and white modern dance film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm WR:

Did I miss the RCA vinyl promo film?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Little Danny:

I don't think it's played yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm chresti:

Pas De Deux, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Little Danny:

Thanks Chresti, that's right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm WR:

I would guess that this is Pas De Deux.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm chresti:

The RCA vinyl story did play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Little Danny:

Another one-chord wonder, this Bo Diddley song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Little Danny:

Bo had the most beautiful guitar tone ever.
Avatar 11:17pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh Man, can you just imagine having the band playing this at your wedding reception?
  11:20pm Chris Brown:

Missing much of this live, but I look forward to digging into this show in the archives!
Avatar 11:22pm Franco Twinkie:

I've always loved Cat Squirrel since my mom got Fresh Cream for my thirteenth birthday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Little Danny:

I first heard it through Fresh Cream, too! That album still has some good moments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Little Danny:

Another essentially one-chord song, "Do the Do."
  11:25pm Dean:

Deux de deux.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Little Danny:

Mean Dean! How goes it, bud?
Avatar 11:26pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay one more comment then I shut up. I saw Howin' Wolf open for Alice Cooper in 1972. I still haven't got over it. It truly changed the way I thought about music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Little Danny:

Howlin' Wolf is god.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Matt from New Orleans:

That’s an interesting combo
  11:27pm Dean:

Ca va.
Avatar 11:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Amen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Matt from New Orleans:

Did Howlin’ join Alice for School’s Out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Matt from New Orleans:

Danny to your earlier question Be My Guest was huge in Jamaica
Avatar 11:29pm Franco Twinkie:

It was during the time that Killer came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm WR:

This Jim Jackson could be a Beefheart & Magic Band early outtake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Little Danny:

I believe it, Matt. I know there is a lot of history out there about the influence of R&B on Jamaican music. I just don't know that much about Jamaican music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Little Danny:

Truly, WR. There seemed to be two different rhythms in play, both of them weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm chresti:

Wow Volcano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm Little Danny:

Dean I love you. Thank you for your contribution!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm chresti:

I love band saws.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Danny and all
  11:34pm Dean:

Thank you, Danny. Wasn't much, but I love you, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm Little Danny:

Coela! How goes it my good manth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

bummer, i missed Billy Preston.
cool i made it in time for Willie Brown
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm coelacanth∅:

Danny i'm knackered
you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm Little Danny:

Knackered is the word here too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

...and i missed most of one of my favorite nights to listen to the radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm WR:

Wow, Franco, I didn't get to see Howlin' Wolf. Great concert combo for 72.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm chresti:

Sorry about your miss, coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm chresti:

You got here just in time for bandsaw restoration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm coelacanth∅:

chresti this guy's amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm coelacanth∅:

...although i think it's odd that he chose to sacrifice a perfectly good wrench for this device. he could've done it another way.

...maybe he's got too many wrenches
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm chresti:

Plenty of clamps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm Little Danny:

Ha, yes, so man clamps in this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm Little Danny:

*many
  11:48pm Dean:

Pony up, folks. Even just a little.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Matt from New Orleans:

Thanks Danny. Been a fantastic show. Putting the phone down for the last few. Have a good night everyone.
Avatar 11:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Industry On Parade, where? not around here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Little Danny:

Thanks Matt!
Avatar 11:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Can you imagine taking apart locomotives all day then going home and eating meatloaf?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm coelacanth∅:

(or rice and beans)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Little Danny:

OMGGG Chresti and Dean are the stars tonight! Thank you, and thank you both, I love you both!

Best damn people.
Avatar 11:55pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm so glad I don't work in a foundry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm chresti:

Thank YOU Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm coelacanth∅:

i'm so glad Skip James existed
  11:57pm Dean:

Meatloaf? Yes, I can imagine eating it night after night. You haven't had my meatloaf, Franco. Trust me, it's spectacular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm coelacanth∅:

but i'm so sad he was too bitter to embrace his "rediscovery"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm WR:

coelacanth∅ truth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Little Danny:

Chresti and Dean! I'll thank you both properly at the beginning of next week's show. Thank you again!
Avatar 11:57pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm so glad we have WFMU to take the edge off these sad, sad times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm chresti:

Dean, on a silver platter 1 hope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Matt from New Orleans:

Great Art Neville track
  11:58pm Dean:

Thanks, schmanks. Don't worry about it, Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Little Danny:

Me too, Franco. Boy is FMU the blam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Little Danny:

Haha, the balm! The balm!
  11:59pm Dean:

chresti, my meatloaf on paper plates, even then, is amazing. Not that I'm boasting, except that I am to some extent.
Avatar 11:59pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm also glad Dean takes meatloaf seriously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am chresti:

If the kids like it, then it must be good, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am WR:

Blam works too. And you owe us Frankie Lee Sims. Don't think I have any here. Must search for it.

Love the show Danny, Laters all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am coelacanth∅:

"to some extant" indeed!

...i liked my mother's meatloaf.
don't remember the taste though
  12:02am Dean:

The kids? Not sure. The adults? Yes. Yes, we do like it.
Swag For Life Member 12:03am Ignore Function:

Wham, blam, thank you Dan!
