Richard Chartier  State   Options Mutatis Mutandis (V/A)  Spire  2020  collection compiled & produced by The Eternal Chord, a project by Mike Harding & Claire M Singer, which is based on Touch’s Spire, a long-running project centered on the sonic power of the organ. Almost no other instrument can trace a vector from the deep time of technology through to the present, and thus equal the several thousand-year old history of the organ. Any number of players from two upwards can perform The Eternal Chord. Hildur Guðnadóttir, Anna von Hausswolff, Maia Urstad, Marcus Davidson, Charles Matthews and others have all played alongside Mike Harding or Claire M Singer, offering various renditions of this majestic piece. / "Mutatis mutandis" means: with the necessary changes having been made or with the respective differences having been considered. Unlike most English terms with Latin parentage, mutatis mutandis (which translates literally as "things having been changed that have to be changed") maintains its Latinate aspect entirely. It doesn't look like an English phrase, which is perhaps why it remains rather uncommon despite having functioned in English since the 16th century. Although the phrase is used in the specialized fields of law, philosophy, & economics when analogous situations are discussed, it appears in other contexts, too, where analogy occurs, as this quote from Henry James' "The American" demonstrates: "Roderick made an admirable bust of her at the beginning of the winter, and a dozen women came rushing to him to be done, mutatis mutandis, in the same style." / Chartier also records under his Pinkcourtesyphone moniker  *   0:47:06 (MP3 | Pop‑up)

Sultan gave Mesinai a Multivox analog tape echo unit, which he would combine with a drum machine and turntable to create his own lo-fidelity recordings on a boombox. In late 2017, they recruited Shaw, an artist, university lecturer, and photo researcher, as the group’s singer. David Borden  Esty Point, Summer 1978   Options Music For Amplified Keyboard Instruments  Spectrum Spools  2015  orig released 1981 / While working at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. during the late '60s, composer David Borden met Robert Moog, who was then refining his first commercial voltage-controlled synthesizer, what we would now refer to simply as a Moog. Freshly returned from a stint as a Fulbright student in West Berlin, Borden had an open mind toward new ideas in music but knew very little about synthesizers, which were then fairly bulky and esoteric. According to the composer, this made him an ideal test subject for Moog, who allowed Borden to experiment with his prototypes as a way to proof the designs for regular consumers. Not long after, Borden would found Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company, a keyboard trio that performed works by then-emerging composers like Terry Riley, Robert Ashley, and Steve Reich. Very quickly, the trio evolved into an all-synthesizer ensemble, performing original work using a number instruments provided by Moog. Borden is currently the Director of the Digital Music Program at Cornell University.    1:49:54 (MP3 | Pop‑up)

Avatar 6:57am Brian in UK:

Quick hello Carol & Ruth & Lunartics.

Ruth, cool set yesterday, was it straight back to the Tardis afterwards?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57am Stanley:

LiX - when you analyse it, time can only be two things. Under scrutiny, there is no present, there is no actual instant that is neither past nor present. If there is how long is that instant? As the past or future do not actually exist, being constructs of the mind and if the present doesn’t exist then time must be nonexistent. If the present is the only thing that actually happens, although it cannot be shown to exist other than an assumed experience that it does, then time cannot exist as it, by its nature must have a past and a future.
Discuss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58am Matthew_London:

@Carol - it's the cover of a UK government book/pamphlet(?) about bridges from the 60s/70s(?). I've never read it. Don't even own it. Just another lovely-looking nugget thrown up by the internet :)

@Wild Neil: Where does that leave Rochester?(To me, everything north of 14th St is upstate NY)

alright wild neil, I'll give you Buffalo. But that's it! everything else is upstate! Right Carol?? :)
Avatar 8:16am Sylvia (France-NYC):

I've never seen these movies, the Before Trilogy. Hearing their dialogues about hey, sure you're French, you just have to come to US is rather depressing considering today's situation.

  8:19am wild neil:

Rochester might be WNY or it might be aligned with Syracuse and be Central NY. I think I've heard both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19am YETI BOB:

Also never seen the "Before" trilogy, which is really odd, since Linklater made some other films that I loved ("Waking Life", "A Scanner Darkly", "Slacker") Somehow missed a lot of 90s films. (Oh right, I was in grad school!)

Hey Yeti Bob. And a good day to you good sir.
Avatar 8:23am northguineahills:

@Wild Neil: My college gf was from Pittsford (outside Rochester), So, I'd go up once a year (we dated for 3 years). (I was at UF).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am CarolCrow:

@upstate sean@8:15: Haha - so funny! :) :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am YETI BOB:

WildNeil: Once I drove from Chicago to Hudson NY then on to NYC. On the way I stopped in Buffalo. None of the Hudsonites or Manhattanites or Brookylners I talked to had ever even been to Buffalo - and they seemed to think it was sort of weird that I went there, like "that's a real place?".

problem with traveling right now, even to an "open" country is it's still risky health wise, obviously, and you can end up stranded if rules change overnight.
Avatar 8:32am Heidee:

Hello lovelies!
  Swag For Life Member 8:32am upstate sean:

depending on the election, maybe NY will just become its own country.

That's a gramatically correct sentence in American english, devised by a clever linguist. See en.wikipedia.org... for an analysis & explanation

Avatar 8:41am northguineahills:

@David: if you use the NFL team, the Bills, and first start talking about bison as a set up, you can actually add another Buffalo to that sentence (I have done so)( I'm a linguistic dork).
Avatar 8:42am I was Dave Bowman:

@Yeti...I like yours, too.
  8:42am Doris from Droitwich:

I guess is also Kurt Loder. This section is really nice.

@ngh: Fantastic! I've noted that the genus and species name for the western gorilla is "Gorilla gorilla", but it's hard to make that into a sentence, even if you allow "guerilla". Maybe you are up to the challenge :)

I loved Eddie Van Halen’s talent. That interview changed my thoughts on VH not changing the name after they hired Sammy. He wrote all the music so no matter what he recorded it was VanHalen.
