Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Rich in Washington:

Does this song predate Paul Revere and the Raiders' song? Amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm ARB:

rich, hello!
Avatar 1:14pm Feldpausch:

This song is heartbreaking
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm ARB:

yes, i think this was the first version, written for him by john d loudermilk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Rich in Washington:

Laibach did a weird version of that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm ARB:

check the controversial origin story on his wiki page en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm ARB:

under the "indian reservation" section
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm ARB:

woah, i've not heard the laibach version, gonna track that down
Avatar 1:16pm Franco Twinkie:

We were in New Mexico driving across the res in lightning storm listening to a Navajo radio station and the only words we could understand were - Ford Truck. Then there would be a flash bang followed by rain and hail.
Avatar 1:19pm solo mon:

HI EV ONE! Im here just toiling at "work"
Avatar 1:20pm Martinibomb:

i always like that "native" beat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Rich in Washington:

I actually have today off as a work holiday.
Avatar 1:20pm Franco Twinkie:

Solo, I started working early so I could devote my full attention to this spectacular racist nonsense.
Avatar 1:22pm solo mon:

Franco - me too but that just meant oh we can comment more? when i turned it in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm WR:

In my comment about holiday I was going to write something about it being a day celebrating anglo-euro invasion of the western hemisphere. Stepped away from it because it is more complex than Fuck Columbus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm ARB:

hi solo!
Avatar 1:23pm solo mon:

and I LOOOVE to see my words In capital papyrus
Avatar 1:24pm recordrouletteclub:

This is neat!!
Avatar 1:24pm Ursula1000:

I'd like to see Capital Papyrus and Comic Sans in an arm wrestling match
Avatar 1:24pm solo mon:

God Porest this i great
Avatar 1:25pm Franco Twinkie:

I love seen this statue been pushed into the drink!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm notsoKWYET:

Did any see that documentary that came out a few years ago called "Indians Who Rocked The World"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm ARB:

true wr, much more complex. on that note remember that columbus never even stepped foot on the continental us. he landed in the bahamas
Avatar 1:26pm solo mon:

YES Notso!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm ARB:

notsokwyet, i did see that recently
Avatar 1:26pm Feldpausch:

I grew up in Michigan and it's full of Native American names like Muskegon, Otsego, Saginaw, and my hometown; Kalamazoo
Avatar 1:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Our house is on Tongva native land that was stolen by the Spanish to build The San Gabriel Mission.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm ARB:

the beatnik poem this week is extra absurd
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm ARB:

but i couldn't resist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm notsoKWYET:

What did you think?
Avatar 1:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Feld, do you remember Thrifty Acres?
Avatar 1:30pm solo mon:

o abt the doc? I liked it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm ARB:

honestly didn't like it as much as i wanted to. the mardis gras indian part was my favorite.
Avatar 1:31pm Feldpausch:

Franco! Ha! Went many times to Meijer Thrifty Acres
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm WR:

Weird hearing John Drew Barrymore do a scripted take on Lord Buckley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm notsoKWYET:

I didn't love it either.... some neat parts... agreed on the Mardi Gras Indians... also loved the performance by Rihannon Giddens and those other women on the front porch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm ARB:

there's a great chapter on the mardis gras indians in ned sublette's book "the world that made new orleans"
Avatar 1:34pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh yeah! Do you remember the ice cream section? I had this totally gruesome rainbow sherbet.
Avatar 1:36pm Feldpausch:

Franco, I remember the Purple Cows. Ever get those?
Avatar 1:37pm Oatmeal:

Crazy rockin' numbers here, nice single digs. That Fatima cut was great, Curtis too!
Avatar 1:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay Feld, how about Satellite Burgeteria -'Out of this world food for down to Earth prices.'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm ARB:

thanks oats, next one up is my favorite
Avatar 1:39pm Ursula1000:

Would you all say that tracks like Wig Wam Bam from The Sweet or Half Breed from Cher carry too much baggage nowadays?
Avatar 1:40pm Oatmeal:

Looked up Fatima and it's been comped on Stag-O-Lee Gunsmoke series... want those. Have a few others they put out like the 4 10" volumes of Beat from Badsville. Love that Stag-O-Lee label (like the crazy stuff Omni/Roundtable put out).
Avatar 1:40pm Oatmeal:

Joe Meek!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm ARB:

yes!
Avatar 1:41pm Oatmeal:

I also love 'Let's Go See Gran'ma' from Joy & Dave. Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Rich in Washington:

The Pacific northwest has tons of indigenous names for towns, rivers, lakes, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm ARB:

ursula1k i don't know, some would say yes and some no. I was thinking about Diskomo this morning.
Avatar 1:46pm Feldpausch:

Franco, no knowledge of that place. Just the usual A&W Rootbeer drive-ins
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Rich in Washington:

diskomo the Residents track? THey also did a rendition of Hank williams' Kawliga.
Avatar 1:47pm Franco Twinkie:

F-Troop was one of my favorite shows when I was ten, It had the best comical Indians that always had a beef with the soldiers in the fort. It dovetailed neatly into the first wave of hippie rock bands that dressed like Indians or Union soldiers. I made no distinction, I liked it all.
Avatar 1:48pm Feldpausch:

Great selections ARB. I'm so excited today's show is a double-album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm ARB:

yeah i mean the whole Eskimo album, and the remix 12" both of which I love!
Avatar 1:49pm Franco Twinkie:

I guess I should stay on topic, Feld, we can talk about Michigan on our own time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm ARB:

their kawliga version is great, i remember ursula1k saying he can't hear any rendition without the residents one coming to mind
Avatar 1:54pm Ursula1000:

In Adam Ant's bio he mentioned how he reached out to a Native American tribe (forgot which) to get their blessing since he was getting reamed for appropriating their style. The Ants alongside peers like Bow Wow Wow--I always thought they did it with love--mixed w other influences--pirates/spaghetti western/burundi drums...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm ARB:

oats: i love let's go see gran'ma too
Avatar 1:54pm Oatmeal:

ARB, thanks for today's Indigenous Day Special... hear ya in an hour for part 2! Love the playlist gifs... sharing Native voices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm WR:

Yes, Franco, another F-Troop fan here, at least in my youth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm coelacanth∅:

digging what you're laying down ARB
been here for a while now

...can we set aside another day sometime to hate on cortez?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm ARB:

coelacantho: i would love to pour scorn upon cortez for an hour and would have no trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm ARB:

U1k: did he get their blessing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings from just north of Poughkeepsie, aka "the reed-covered lodge by the little-water place," that the local Wappinger tribe called the area.
Avatar 1:56pm Ursula1000:

yep
Fab show!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Rich in Washington:

Wonderful show, ARB!
Avatar 1:58pm Franco Twinkie:

This show was a masterpiece!
Avatar 1:58pm Oatmeal:

For the Adam Ant discussion, I remember reading about that a while back on DM regarding appropriation and here it is: dangerousminds.net...
Avatar 1:59pm Ursula1000:

that Michael Jackson thing is hilarious!
Avatar 1:59pm Oatmeal:

Suffice to say, much respect to Adam Ant and yes, haaaa on the MJ call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm ARB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm ARB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm WR:

Consider that many of the Native American roles in TV & movies prior to the 1980s were played by Italian American actors.
  2:00pm chresti in Griffith Park:

Hi ARB and cannibos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm ARB:

hi chresti!
Avatar 2:02pm Oatmeal:

Looking forward to hour 2, thanks ARB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm ARB:

wr even today, on the brand new season of fargo there's a native american character played by a half asian actress. it's still a problem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm ARB:

thanks so much my friends!
Avatar 2:02pm Oatmeal:

Oh F! There is a new season of Fargo to watch. Exciting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm ARB:

the actress is great btw, and it's set in my home town in the 50s so i love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Jan Turkenburg:

Thanks Alina, I have clicky starred this entire show! :-)
