Options October 11, 2020: IT'S THE CURTIS AMY & ART BLAKEY SHOW!
This Sunday, we give the drummer Art Blakey some, but leave plenty of birthday cake left over for Texas tenor great Curtis Amy in a dual celebration, featuring various and sundry Blakey band lineups, from The Jazz Messengers and elsewhere, and Amy’s way-underrated oevre with Dupree Bolten, Paul Bryant, and others. Complimentary hats and hooters at the door.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm doctorjazz:

Hadn't hard that Scheningen album before, great track and band!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Ike:

Sounds good! It's amazing that I can hear you here in the U.S. over all the millions of other Democrats deafeningly chanting over and over, "Can't trust those amazing poll numbers, gotta get out the vote, can't trust those polls, gotta get out the vote"....
Avatar 1:33pm Stork:

Ike, Little Danny - y'all set a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Little Danny:

Razor sharp, this.
Avatar 1:43pm Stork:

So great that Blakey was always facing forward - giving Wayne Shorter the lead to write and even arrange. Blakey really shared the spotlight, and gladly.
Avatar 1:46pm Stork:

@Ike: keep up the pressure, Dems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Stork, clubbers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Little Danny:

Not a bad entree, Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Little Danny:

Yessir. And still one of fave Blakeys all these years latter.

Hi Stork! Great show today. I’ve been listening while doing chores around the house and talking to my Mom on the phone.

Avatar 2:27pm Stork:

Hi Wendy! Nice you're there.
Avatar 2:30pm Stork:

Hey doc - be well - big chunk of overtime today with some pow-pow tunes I hope you can catch later. Tschüß, Herr Doktor!
Avatar 2:40pm Stork:

Hey out there to all who pledged - deepest hearfelt thanks, and I'm sorry I haven't mentioned you tonight, but I plan to make a huge fuss over you all next week. I'm really klutzy with the mechanics, still, but I'm seeing your generous pledges and I'm thinkin' on ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Michael 98145:

holy moley, don't stop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm jmd:

Stork Club is always great but somehow today's show is greaterer. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Michael 98145:

Excelsior!
  2:55pm Dean:

Will you call my son, who expects me to pick him up at 12:15pm, i.e., under 20 minutes from now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Michael 98145:

All hail, those Archives
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm coelacanth∅:

i'll call him,Dean. hold on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm coelacanth∅:

okay i called him. don't know if he heard me. (also is he going to know he's the right "Dean's son"?)
  2:59pm Dean:

Funny you mention that, @coel. His sister just called him and handed the phone to me, announcing, "Here, Sebastian, dad wants to talk to the adopted one." (She's nine.) I greeted him, "Hi, Reggie!"
Avatar 2:59pm Stork:

Thanks, jmd! Ever do I strive for the greaterer!
Avatar 3:00pm Stork:

Dean: tell him you'll be no more than about an hour late. We got overtime here!
  3:01pm Dean:

Kid's got no sense of priority.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm coelacanth∅:

that's confusing Dean but i think i got it!
(so next time i yell "Sebastian!" out the back door?)
  3:04pm Dean:

(That was the first my biological kids had heard of Reggie.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm coelacanth∅:

do you have an adopted son named Reggie they never heard about?
...an imaginary friend?
  3:08pm Dean:

No adopted children or additional biological children to my knowledge. Just toying with my two kids' vulnerable minds.
  3:08pm Dean:

Kinda wish I had more, though, through either avenue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm coelacanth∅:

haha
... you could get a lot of mileage out of Reggie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Michael 98145:

some of us are either too selfish or dysfunctional to imagine having -any- children
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm coelacanth∅:

i was with a woman for a few years who said she didn't want to procreate. many women say that then one day they're talking (*hypothetically*) about how beautiful our kids would be.
i know this one meant it though, because of her reason. she was too selfish and wanted all the attention for herself. she knew she'd be a crappy mother. (as opposed to most people, who are crappy parents but never considered that possibility)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Ike:

Hear hear, @M98145!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Michael 98145:

i just hope we leave a future for them
  3:25pm Dean:

I am selfish and dysfunctional. I didn't want kids, because I knew I'd be a crappy parent. I'm not sure my having kids contravenes any of this, except the part about wanting kids. Started late, hence the mere pair. I swear, I could deal with a dozen of 'em. I should have known as much, because shortly after graduation from college I worked p/t at a daycare facility. The kids were fantastic (and now they're all about 40 years old).

Back from retrieving the eldest. What'd I miss?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Michael 98145:

possibly one of the greatest shows ever
  3:27pm Dean:

I also informed both of my kids when they were old enough to understand that my first baby was my stereo system. That put them in their place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Michael 98145:

good point. i also wouldn't have wanted them touching my records.
  3:30pm Dean:

I have a photograph of my eldest at 2 or 3 gnawing on a CD jewel box after he emptied the lower shelves of one of the racks onto the floor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm doctorjazz:

Hey, in OT, just back from biking, catch what's left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm coelacanth∅:

i wasn't allowed to touch my parents records or stereo except occasionally in their presence. they were out a lot though.
what that taught me is how to be very careful and respectful of records and stereos; and how to leave things as i found them.
  3:35pm Dean:

I would be all the more proud of my kids, @coel, if I had the slightest evidence that they operated that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm doctorjazz:

My kids don't touch my records or stereo (and I've never told them not to). Think it's a mix of being intimidated by it, and being In the Spotify/phone generation, that's how they think about listening to music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm coelacanth∅:

i would've been a good parent. sometimes i regret not having kids.
  3:39pm spodiodi:

Dean @ 12:25, first two sentences — same. But I have two nieces and two nephews that belong to my brothers... that’s enough for me :).

Also, hello coelacanthø! Been afk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm doctorjazz:

My wife (the therapist), says one needs to be a "good enough" parent, kids are resilient (think this is a school of teaching in therapy world).
Avatar 3:40pm Stork:

I'm really enjoying the confab here tonight. I'll just sit here like a good bartender and listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Michael 98145:

i'll have another. make it a double this time. and whatever my friends here want.
  3:42pm Dean:

"Good enough" feels right to me.
Avatar 3:43pm Stork:

I'll instruct them to give you an extra-good pour, Michael 98145.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Michael 98145:

thanx
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm coelacanth∅:

hey spodi! (..."afk"?)

i have a niece and nephew that i had far more influence on than their father did. they've said i raised them, with their mom.
it's not that satisfying though because their extremely dysfunctional parents and the wealthy community they "grew up" in were/are too much of an influence for mine to prevail.
i don't really like them!
Avatar 3:46pm Stork:

About to empty the last chamber in the clip... thanks, all! So sweet to have ya!!
Avatar 3:48pm Stork:

I now realize that was a very lame ammunition-related expression. I apologize. I never received any formal weapons training.
  3:48pm Dean:

When the partner of a friend of mine learned she was pregnant, she asked me for parental advice. "Don't listen to other parents."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Michael 98145:

no wealth in my branch of the family tree
  3:49pm spodiodi:

Coel, Away From Keyboard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm coelacanth∅:

it's okay Stork... i'll have a kamikaze please.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Michael 98145:

i like to think of this as a typewriter with music
  3:50pm Dean:

Speaking of ammunition-related, I just read this old Gore Vidal piece recommended by Glenn Greenwald: https://archive.vanityfair.com/article/2001/9/gore-vidal-the-meaning-of-timothy-mcveigh
I sure miss Vidal.
  3:52pm Dean:

Some folks need a license to wield a metaphor, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm coelacanth∅:

Michael we had no wealth growing up, but my younger sister was determined to not live in a shithole her whole life so she got her degrees and worked for ny city government. she made more than enough money but sadly married a total douchebag who made 3-4 million $/year.
her branch is the only one with monetary wealth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Michael 98145:

it is -much- easier to be born rich.
take care, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm coelacanth∅:
