Hi! Please stand by!
Avatar 9:02am hyde:

hello! standing by as instructed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am WR:

Stream is ok for now. Right vibe.
  9:05am DJpeterDE:

Standing by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Uncle Michael:

Recumbently peddling by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Thank you -- why do computer settings change on their own??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @hyde, @WR, @DJpeterDE, @Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am WR:

Updates are a curse. I updated Chrome on my phone and blah blah PITA.
Avatar 9:12am hyde:

i like when there's updates and they move things around. that's the best
Avatar 9:12am Listener Gregory:

Whew! I had my box of corngliptious flakes open and was waiting for the cue to pour them into the bowl for my breakfast of delicious listening. Man was my arm getting tired!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am doctorjazz:

Hello D.O.!
Avatar 9:16am TDK60:

Good morning Jeff and Outs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Jeff Golick:

@Listener Gregory: sorry for missing my cue! (And thanks for the contribution!)

Hi there, @doctorjazz & @TDK60!
  9:23am DJpeterDE:

I miss Charlie Haden
Avatar 9:23am Stork:

My Lord, what a Destination! Mornin', sports fans!
Avatar 9:25am Listener Gregory:

This song sounds like a dead ringer for the standard "Look for the Silver Lining."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am doctorjazz:

Great albums, Jones and Haden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am fred:

Hello Jeff and listeners. My contribution should be coming once I sort out tax/rent/wages issues that piled up this week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Jeff Golick:

@Stork! How's the Club looking on this Sunday.
  9:27am DJpeterDE:

I’m gonna say it now: really curious to hear 11. Can’t think of many 11s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @fred! Not to worry at all, really just glad to see you here. I thought of you as I was struggling with tech issues this morning; you always considered them part of the program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Jeff Golick:

I'll be honest, @DJpeterDE: eleven was the hardest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Jeff Golick:

Anthony Braxton's oeuvre held just about every option, but there wasn't much room for multiple 50+ minute tracks.
Avatar 9:30am Stork:

Hi Jeff! Anticipating the roar of the greasepaint and the smell of the crowd. Got a little b-day hug for Leon Thomas today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Great, @Stork! "Smell of the crowd" reminds me that I really, really need to take a shower today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am doctorjazz:

Hats to hear a third part on this Shipp. Softest drumming EVER!
  9:32am DJpeterDE:

With Braxton you could go up to 300 or so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am fred:

I went to the general assembly of the non-profit that runs my fave venue this week. They might make it through this ordeal (they lose money on each show, so that makes sense). Still, they paid musicians for canceled shows, so it's a dire situation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Jeff Golick:

Glad to heaer it, @fred. Is that Instants Chavires?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am fred:

@Jeff: Yep
Avatar 9:37am Stork:

Stay as sweet as you are, JG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am doctorjazz:

The case for NOT showering...
www.npr.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Jeff Golick:

Well, I do share this apartment with other people, is the thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am doctorjazz:

Love this Lowe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am fred:

@doctorjazz: Bars are likely to close tomorrow, but that was announced late on Thiursday. So bars were packed since then. It makes no sense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am doctorjazz:

Like my mom used to say, "People Are IDIOTS!!!"
Avatar 9:48am Listener Gregory:

Ah, yes, the Classic Coltrane Sextet. I think we all saw that coming.
Avatar 9:50am hyde:

this is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Jeff Golick:

Quartet joined by Archie Shepp and Art Davis (as second bass). It's not as good as the quartet, but...it's still really great.
Avatar 9:51am Stork:

@Dr Jazz - that whole not showering thing is true. I've been doing it on the advice of my dermotologist for the past 2-3 years and - though you get a lotta silly blowback - it all checks out. As you get older, your skin loses its acidity and you start to have problems if you keep washing what acid there is off yer dermis all the time. i switched to cleansing oil, and i shower twice a week. And even when my show stinks, I don't!
Avatar 9:53am Stork:

Also the longer you practice these habits, the more your body finds its natural Ph balance again, and your sweat glands start to function normally again.
Avatar 9:54am Stork:

This really hits the spot, Jeff!
  9:54am DJpeterDE:

Sextett! Great joke
Avatar 9:55am Listener Gregory:

I just dug up my t-shirt from the SF Coltrane church. It features A Love Supreme on it. If only I were the size I was at 22, I would put it on right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am doctorjazz:

I don't doubt it, Stork, there's a definite logic to it. More and More they're finding out your biome does a lot for tippy, they're not just hanging out, those little microbes. From GI benefits, to psychological positive effects.
Avatar 9:56am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeterDE: You know the number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Legitimate claim to "best band of the 80s," this Threadgill group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am doctorjazz:

The old argument! Did drums count as one, or did Threadgill not count himself?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am doctorjazz:

Got to see them a few times in the 80's-up there with my best live shows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am doctorjazz:

Speaking of great live bands, this Halvorson group, man...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Jeff Golick:

I was reading recently about this group's appearance at the Village Vanguard. Lorraine was *very* concerned that no one could see (a seated) Mary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am doctorjazz:

(I'm making myself mutt miss live music even more than I already do...)
Avatar 10:03am Stork:

Just listened to the Johnny Smith trib with Mary and Bill Frisell. Man can she shred that archtop!
Avatar 10:04am Listener Gregory:

Have to think that Threadgill did not count himself. Anyone who was in a trio with Steve McCall would know that drums count.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

That's a beaut, @Stork.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am alanr:

Does today's show end with Glenn Branca's concert for 100 guitars?
Avatar 10:05am Listener Gregory:

That record got surprisingly little attention. I think the peculiar labeling, required by Frisell's record contract, was to some degree responsible.
  10:05am DJpeterDE:

Summer shower tip: arm pits, groin, feet, don’t soap anywhere else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am doctorjazz:

Could sees her fine where I was (not sure about the back)... some folks I thought were her family were sitting near me.
They never worry that you generally just seer the pianists back...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @alanr! I had thoughts in that direction...but no, alas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Also, @LG, that record was on Tzadik, right? They don't really do "distribution," or y'know "marketing," in any traditional sense.
Avatar 10:09am Sem:

Hello, Jeff the G, D:O-ers hither, thither, and to hell and gone, and all.
Avatar 10:10am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff Yeah. It's too bad, because it could have attracted both her and his fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Jeff Golick:

Hi there, @Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am doctorjazz:

How much marketing does any of this stuff get? Aside from Nels Cline (who's got the Wilco machine behindhim), and maybe Frisell, is there such a thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am fred:

@alanr: I don't think we'll even get to Rhys Chatham
Avatar 10:16am Listener Gregory:

@doctorjazz, no, but I thought this might get more radioplay, people talking about it, etc. But the truth is, I barely know what real people actually buy or listen to any more.
Avatar 10:18am Stork:

The album covers are a fab addition to the playlist.
  10:18am DJpeterDE:

Sextett: two drummers counted as one instrument. Bass, cello, three frontline horns
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am doctorjazz:

I actually have that Frissell/Halverson album, lost In the piles, have to pull it out and spend a bit more time with it (did like it, but too much music, too little time...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am fred:

Halvorson/Vandermark/McPhee/Brötzmann... I miss live shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Uncle Michael:

Marc Ribot is another sometimes-outre guitarist of relative renown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Jeff Golick:

@Stork, I'm so glad -- I love being able to add the visuals (& look at 'em). All hail Kenzo, for creating a system that allows us to work ahead now in ways we couldn't before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am doctorjazz:

DJpeterDE, that's what I remember reading back in the day (I think it partly was a smart way to get attention, press talking about you. Like calling your instrumental group Sex Mob)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Jeff Golick:

@UM: oh yeah. I think Ribot's trio Ceramic Dog just released a single of some sort...
Avatar 10:23am Stork:

It's a sweet one, DrJazz. Johnny Smith didn't really write that much of his own material, but Mary and Bill play the stuff Johnny loved best, and they follow in his footsteps without even pretending to do so, if that makes sense. And Smith did write the title track, "The Maid WIth the Flaxen Hair," and it's a stunner - Johnny's version and theirs.
Avatar 10:23am Listener Gregory:

I heard this Tentet live at Tonic. *That* was an experience. In some ways, it seemed a shame, because any of the musicians could have played for an hour and entertained us, but they all shared the stage generously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am doctorjazz:

Hey, UM. Ribot Got some attention playing with Tom Waits,, but, yeah, not much notice since...
Avatar 10:25am Stork:

Hiyo, Uncle M! Loved Ribot in the 90's - haven't kept up with him - no special reason why not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jeff Golick:

...and to think people believe Pixies/Nirvana came up with quiet/loud/quiet.
Avatar 10:27am Stork:

I saw Ribot with Elvis C. on the Spike tour - that was an excellent chemistry with ribot and the Attractions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Andrew Waterloo:

I just learned that Ribot played on a Tricky album in the 90s
Avatar 10:28am hyde:

@Andrew wow, i didn't know that
Avatar 10:28am Stork:

Hey, Andrew. I remember that - excellent album.
Avatar 10:28am Listener Gregory:

Ribot recently did a live concert on a rooftop in Queens. Jeff, did you tweet that? Someone captured a bit of it on Twitter. It sounded good, for two minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am fred:

@Jeff G.: Boulez grounded his despise for improv in that recipe. He was mostly wrong, but partly right, as usual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am WR:

Catching up on the count after usual grocery run.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am doctorjazz:

We have THE ELEVEN!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Jeff Golick:

@LG, yeah I think I retweeted a mention of that gig. Ribot's recent Ayler project, Spiritual Unity, is really strong, imo. Greets, @Andrw Waterloo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Jeff Golick:

This 11 is kind of a cheat -- I'm counting Butch Morris, who is conducting.
  10:31am DJpeterDE:

Ribot’s album of protest songs just last year got a lot of mainstream music press attention
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am doctorjazz:

Another. 11
youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am doctorjazz:

(Also a cheat)
Avatar 10:33am TDK60:

I've enjoyed all these numbers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Andrew Waterloo:

We just had a series of small concerts in a park in Hamilton. Not the Wind, Not the Flag played yesterday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am doctorjazz:

Got to one live show since March, Sex Mob upstate NY at a restaurant called The Falcon. Outdoors (back yard), tables well separated. I was a bit like someone who hadn't eaten for days, then unleashed at a buffet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Jeff Golick:

The date on a yogurt container is just for context, right? Does it..."go bad?"
Avatar 10:37am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, you could simultaneously play two quartets and a trio and hope it all holds together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @TDK60!
Avatar 10:39am Listener Gregory:

The credits have Doug Wieselman on guitar in this. Can that be right? Why on earth wouldn't they have him play clarinet?
Avatar 10:39am hyde:

As long as yogurt has no mold, I consider it edible
  10:39am DJpeterDE:

If the yogurt has turned into alcohol, that’s good!
Avatar 10:39am Listener Gregory:

If you don't see mold, the yogurt is good. That's my policy. I mean it's already gone bad and is shot through with bacteria!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am doctorjazz:

Assuming the expiration date isn't 2017...
Avatar 10:41am TDK60:

I went to my first open mike since February this week. Smaller attendance, just several people on a stoop and sidewalk; with a mic thru a guitar amp.
  10:46am Stork:

Moved to the balcony. Digging the show, and the ivy-covered brick-wall of the facing house turn from green to a deep, fiery red. Fall is always longer here in northern Yurp than back in NJ.
Avatar 10:47am Listener Gregory:

There were some outdoor concerts in my town, with enforced spacing, but they sold out immediately, so I couldn't go. Very few, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am doctorjazz:

Wynton Marsalis is playing outdoors, Monmouth Park, NJ, today, 2 PM, tickets by the table. Thought of going, but won't be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am doctorjazz:

(Missed Richard Thompson and Paquito D'Rivera outdoor shows in Joisey, times I couldn't go).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am doctorjazz:

(Thought you'd go for No No Nonette, but that was a hip choice)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

You could play Cage's "4:33" for a zero-tet
Avatar 10:57am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, I have a DVD of 4:33 being played on the organ. Furthermore, and I am not making this up, there were two musicians—the organist and an assistant who changed the stops between movements.
Avatar 10:58am Listener Gregory:

There is no way you will ever get your phone to accept the string "Taht" without changing it every time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

@Doug! I knew I should've consulted you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am fred:

Hey Cecil! (referencing a fave radio segment from long ago)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Jeff Golick:

Hey, shout-outs to @hyde, @Listener Gregory, and @Dean, who have moved the show's needle up during the last hour or so, with some generous contributions. Thanks, gentlemen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
Could you start going into negative territory with the Music Minus One catalog?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am doctorjazz:

This ICP is funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am WR:

Listening to large ensembles featuring Cecil Taylor, it is amazing to me how his playing continues to dominate regardless the size of the ensemble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Jeff Golick:

@WR - I had the exact same thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am doctorjazz:

Close...
Avatar 11:10am DJpeterDE:

@doug zinger zinger zinger!
Avatar 11:10am hyde:

Lee Konitz had his 90th birthday show here in Camridge and i didn't go and that was dumb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: only if you can make time run backward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am doctorjazz:

Listening to late Konitz terminus me a bit of late Billie Holiday...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am doctorjazz:

(...reminds me, should have said)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am coelacanth∅:

good morning Jeff and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

Back to the year, oh I don't know, how about 1618.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am WR:

I remember well a close friend and I first listening to the JCOA album featuring Taylor on Communication #11 and at the end my friend turning to me with a big grin and saying, they didn't have a chance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @coelacanth∅!
Avatar 11:17am Listener Gregory:

I have to go put some laundry on the line, so now would be the time to play some real crap, if you've been holding back on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am doctorjazz:

This Eisenstadt is unfamiliar, like it a lot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am fred:

@Jeff: How's the virus situation at your son's college?
Avatar 11:19am TDK60:

Gotta run. Thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Jeff Golick:

It's holding up, @fred. The school helpfully posts a dashboard of how things are going: www.vassar.edu...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Jeff Golick:

Bye, @TDK60! Thanks for checking in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am chresti:

Yo, @chresti!
Avatar 11:23am spodiodi:

good morning, Jeff and journeypeople!
Avatar 11:25am DJpeterDE:

That Vassar website/dashboard is very thoughtful and transparent, one of the better university websites that I've seen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Jeff Golick:

Welcome, @spodiodi!

Great take on Bird (didn'tBraxton to a whole Bird album?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Jeff Golick:

Uh, yeah, @doc! Dig the link at left; this is an expanded version of an older hat ART release.
Avatar 11:31am Listener Gregory:

Back. That Agharta was a good choice for my absence, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Jeff Golick:

PS. That Harris Eisenstadt Octet record above is the only album I'm aware of that references Destination: Out by name - (our briefly running live jazz series hosted the band once).
Avatar 11:32am DJpeterDE:

I have the hat ART but not the complete. What's the deal with Braxton on piano, are there some tracks with both Braxton and Mengelberg at the the piano? (I think I would pay special if Braxton and Mengelberg were seated at the same piano.)
Avatar 11:35am Listener Gregory:

Have dug out my copy of the Canada Day Octet for listening, now with fuller appreciation of its historic significance, DO-wise.
Avatar 11:37am DJpeterDE:

Oh my. I may have to get the full Hollenbeck at next Bandcamp Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am doctorjazz:

Avatar 11:53am DJpeterDE:

Ha! I played "...at dawn" on my show last Tuesday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am doctorjazz:

Pulled it off, Jeff, lots of fun, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Jeff Golick:

I probably picked up on that, @DJpeterDE, at least subliminally, via the radio aether.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for being here, @doc!
Avatar 11:54am DJpeterDE:

Sigh. In these days of division and sequestration, contemplating a mysterious aether that connects us is strangely comforting.
Avatar 11:55am StringOFperils:

Enjoyed the show, from the lurk-yurt, Jeff. I vote for you.
Avatar 11:55am spodiodi:

thanks, Jeff! nice music... glad i caught a little bit of your show today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:
