Good morning Michael, Crew, folks!
  11:04am Sean:

I like this better than the "official" version. Less production makes it sound more authentic to my ears. Not in all cases, but I've never loved that version. (Cheap Trick)

I think hard drugs and harder poetry had more to do with it. An abusive dad probably got the ball rolling as well.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Dennis Diken:

hey Mikey and all! I remember calling record stores to check when they'd have the newly released Shake Some Action LP in stock. I think I waited outside the shop until it opened on the day I bought it!

Morning, Shelleys & Ruth & all!
  11:22am clarke:

perhaps bazooka joe got some kick-back from his bazooka's eyepiece?

We would look for discarded pop bottles on the way to the store to buy candy. Bazooka gum was one of them.
  11:23am paul:

Remember "Dynomite" by Bazuka? 1975-ish
Avatar 11:23am Fredericks:

This song after the Groovies sounds like it is playing on a plastic portable turntable with built in speakers.
  11:23am clarke:

he seemed a bit young to be a veteran, tho.
  11:23am friend:

Uh oh - the sound is very tinny, no bass again. A few FMU shows lately have had a problem lately where every-other-song gets tinny/without bass
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:24am Frank In Queens:

The Joel Paterson song sounded the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Listener Baby:

I did the bazooka comic thing too. I got the smallest, worst, Chicago White Sox
Pennant ever made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Mr. Fine Wine:

"Fogert"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am myron feld:

@Dennis: I remember reading an absolutely rave review of SSA in Bomp! Magazine. Then I found out Greg Shaw managed the band.

Sweet cover by my mom's teenage hearthrob!
  11:25am Sean:

I need to put more Rick Nelson on my turntable, Ricky too.
  11:27am Cooh John:

#1 hit. More could be done with that song.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2021 11:27am Hoboken Jack:

Hey Greg, hey Fredericks!!
  11:27am Sean:

Clint Ballard wrote it. He WAS good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am myron feld:

Dee Dee sounds like she's singing her own backups on this. The guitar solo is SO great.
  11:29am JimB:

Hey Michael, some of the songs sound a little thin, as if they were coming in over the phone. Announcer's voice OK.
  11:29am McGroovey:

I wanna hear more by that bazooka band.
Avatar 11:29am Michael Shelley:

Thanks - I think its sorted - please let me know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Greg from ZONE 5:

Yo Jack!
This song is so tight.
  11:32am Steve:

The Bazooka song didn't make it onto the playlist! Information, please.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:32am Handy Haversack:

Hooo, that "You're No Good" got the local number-one-song singer singing along! Fire!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Greg from ZONE 5:

It has already been a productive (and STRANGE) Shocktober. Read The Monster Club and watched The Video Dead, Don't Look Now and The Willies. And it's only the 3rd!!!
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2021 11:33am Hoboken Jack:

  11:33am Dennis Diken:

right myron! all in all, the mid-late 70s were such a cool time to be collecting records
  11:33am Sean:

?? for the board.
What is the best way to listen to this show live on an iphone?

I am extremely limited in my comprehension of 21st century technology so please assume I am an idiot. Thanks in advance.

Sean, I like the "pop-up" link at the top of the playlist.
  11:35am clarke:

hey Van still makes good records. this is old - a contractual obligation, actually
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:35am Moammar:

I'm declaring a complete and total shutdown of Van Morrison until the pandemic abates.
Avatar 11:35am Roberto:

His recent nut-job actions confirm that the Bang Contractual sessions were indeed his finest moment artistically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Brian C.:

Instead of poptarts, you should have a danish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Devin B.:

Ol' Van's still got it!!

Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:38am Handy Haversack:

Greg, nice! Kate and I have been planning out some horror movies. Did you ever watch Los Espookys?

I'm reading /The Drowning Girl/ by Caitlin M. Kiernan, which is creepy and excellent.
  11:38am ?:

is it just us here in New Orleans or is there a big drop off between Michael on mike, sound hood and then the music? sounds all tinny as if from a small plastic a.m. radio
Avatar 11:38am Roberto:

My take is that people who are not high-risk should vote in person. We can't rely entirely on the mail-in option.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am anon in Louisiana:

Icymi The Aretha doc Amazing Grace is on Hulu and it is stunning. You also get to see Sydney Pollack running around in his own movie.
  11:43am clarke:

mac davis was pretty good in North Dallas Forty. Rear Window in my all-time top ten.
  11:43am Andres:

Good morning, all! That Van Morrison sounded like a sketch for a future Hotel Yorba.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:43am Handy Haversack:

We both liked it a lot, Greg. Also, it turns out Kate has never seen Evil Dead or Army of Darkness, so that situation needs dealing with!

We watched Lake Mungo not too long ago -- that's worth checking out.

As my friend Rob said back in April, in the pandemic every night's Saturday night and every morning is Monday morning.

Flamin' Groovies zero airplay in South Florida. #1 in my house.
  12:10pm clarke:

in more detail: WTUL (new orleans) had a show called Smace's Oldies Show which was amazingly close to what WFMU became later. he used to play Teenage Head almost every week. when the Shake Some Action album came out - i spotted it in the cut-out section! the groovies NEVER got much radio love, sadly.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Handy Haversack:

This song sounds like it has the potential to catch on.
Avatar 12:11pm Ross T.:

Groovies were covered in various periodicals. I discovered them via "Supersnazz" for $1.99 in the bargain bin.
  12:12pm DaveinPA:

amazing demo!
  12:12pm ?:

For the week ending Sept. 11, '76, Billboard reported that Shake Some Action was a "star performer," i.e., made substantial progress on the charts that week. The Groovies jumped from 174 to 164 on the Top LPs and Tape chart that week.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Frank In Queens:

If Pete's demos were the official versions of the songs, they'd still be amazing!
  12:13pm clarke:

That was me w/ the Billboard bit @12:12. Probably heard SSA on KROQ at the time. I've purchased three copies over the years. Two for me, one for a friend who hadn't heard of the Groovies.

By Oct. 2, '76, SSA had charted for seven weeks and sat at 142, two slots below The Ramones on their 18th week on the chart.
  12:20pm McGroovey:

Bazooka music reminds me of these Barbie-like dolls my sisters had that came with a record with holes for the dolls' feet in the label area. When you played the record, you put (they put) they dolls on the holes, and the dolls "dancing" (actually just rotated around standing in the middle of the record). I think the dolls reach had names, and they were the "singers". Some of the songs were pretty good. Once in a while one of the songs pops into my head, but not right now.
